Health Matters in the Comox Valley
As part of the North Island Hospital Project, Vancouver Island is getting ready to open two brand new hospitals.
A new $331.7 million, 39,826-square-metre, 153-bed hospital will be built in Courtney and a new $274.5 million,
32,316-square-metre, 95-bed hospital will be built in Campbell River.
The Comox Valley Hospital (Courtney) is scheduled for completion in 2017 and will include 153 acute care beds
that will accommodate in-patient units, intensive care units, telemetry, pediatrics, labour and delivery rooms,
Aboriginal maternal health and psychiatry. The Campbell River Hospital’s new addition will include 95-beds
and will include the following services: emergency, maternity services, orthopedic clinic, ambulatory
procedures, cardio-pulmonary diagnostic services, operating rooms, surgical daycare, telemetry, pediatric care,
outpatient clinics, chemotherapy and medical daycare, medical imaging (including MRI), rehab, pharmacy and
laboratory services.
The hospitals are part of planned healthcare upgrades for a growing region rife with economic opportunities.
In winery news, the Beafort Vineyard & Estate Winery, located in the Comox Valley, has recently been purchased
by mega-Hollywood director James Cameron. The Avatar creator takes over a winery that produces Cabernet
Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Pinot Noir, as well as a sparkling red and Port-style fortified wine.
