2. UP AND COMING
St Austell is the latest Cornish
corner to undergo a makeover. Set
to bring some razzle dazzle to this
area of the county’s south coast is
the £250million Carlyon Beach
regeneration project starting this
year, which will encompass homes,
restaurants, spas and shops.
Cannis Rock Apartments just
outside St Austell, meanwhile,
have panoramic sea views.
From £890 for seven nights,
holidaycottages.co.uk
3. GOOD BUNS
Forget seafood, the burger is
making waves on the coast.
Hubbox started life as a
restaurant pop-up in a 30ft
shipping container. It now has
four permanent sites, the newest
in St Austell, all with industrialfeel interiors (hubbox.co.uk).
Sam’s At The Bay, meanwhile, is
the latest project by local
restaurateur Sam Sixton. The
tiki hut on Crinnis Beach serves
burgers, moules mariniere and
craft beers set to a soundtrack of
chill-out tunes and live music.

4. MEALS ON WHEELS
Let’s hope it’s not The Tempest: The dramatic setting of the Minack Theatre on Porthcurno Beach
Heritage: Pentillie Castle and (right) a culinary cycle safari
Perfect for foodies wanting to burn
off the calories is a new gourmet
cycling tour of west Cornwall.
The five-day itinerary, by
Cornish Cycle Tours, covers
106 miles and takes in
St Ives, Marazion and
Porthleven, the site of Rick
Stein’s newest restaurant
Rick Stein Porthleven
(rickstein.com). Cycle hire,
luggage transfers and
A rare find: A juicy
accommodation are provided.

5. SMALL STAYS
Having won a Michelin star for
Padstow restaurant Number 6,
chef Paul Ainsworth is
opening boutique hotel
Padstow Townhouse this
summer. It will offer six
rooms in the heart of
Padstow, north Cornwall’s
answer to the Hamptons.
Expect quirky interiors in the
18th-century building.

6. CORNISH BUBBLES
Sounds of summer: Ben Howard
is playing Newquay, Paloma Faith
the Eden Project
Cornwall’s Knightor Winery in St
Austell Bay grows its own grapes
in vineyards in the Roseland and
Whitsand Bay. It’s gaining a solid
reputation for its quality still and
sparkling wines and hosts tours
and tasting sessions in the
converted barns. Recommended
is the Madeleine Angevine 2013

in the Cellar Door Café.

7. PUT YOUR FOOT IN IT
Kite surfing and shark safaris
are so last year. Cornwall’s
latest idea for sports
fanatics is Football Golf.
The new hybrid sport uses
the same rules as golf but
instead of using clubs,
players kick a football into
holes avoiding various
obstacles on the course.

Perfect for all ages.

8. BE PART
OF THE ART SCENE
Cornwall has been a mecca
for artists since the end of
the 19th century – think
Barbara Hepworth and
potter Bernard Leach.
A glimpse into today’s
scene can be seen at
Porthmeor Studios in St Ives,
which has had a makeover and
is now home to some of the
county’s best artists, such as Mark
Dion and Naomi Frears, and
offers art workshops.

9. TAKE YOUR SEATS
OUTSIDE
The balmy weather and
spectacular scenery of Cornwall
combine to provide the perfect
backdrop for outdoor theatre.
This summer Pentillie Castle, near
Saltash, is opening its grounds to
Buns and roses:
Live music at
Sam’s At The Bay
tiki food bar on
Crinnis Beach
The Eden Sessions at The Eden
Project (July 12-17, edensessions.
com) will see Paloma Faith, Paolo
Nutini and more play in the eco
project’s amphitheatre. The
endless days of summer are also
kept alive at the Sundowner
Sessions taking place at Lusty
Glaze in Newquay. Ben Howard
and the John Butler Trio are just
two of the names playing in what
could be the most picturesque
music venue in the UK.
