Paul VornHagen Trio “The American Songbook of Jazz” Tuesday, May 5, 2014 7:00 P.M. Henry Ford Centennial Library Join us for this entertaining musical end to our season. Saxophonist/flutist Paul VornHagen began playing the flute, at the age of 22, in Ann Arbor. Self-taught for the first 5 years of his study, (saxophone, flute, vocals), he then enrolled at City College of San Francisco for one year where he took courses in music theory, woodwinds, piano and played sax and flute in the Big Band. Returning to Michigan, Paul then played with jazz and R & B groups throughout the Detroit Metro area and formed his own quartet. Appearances at jazz festivals and night clubs furthered his career which resulted in several Detroit Music Awards. He continued to return to San Francisco where he became a regular headliner at the famous Jazz at Pearls and other jazz hotspots. Since 1991, he has recorded over seven of his own jazz CDs to critical acclaim, as well as forming the award winning Latin jazz band, Tumbao Bravo, with conguero Alberto Nacif. The band has recorded four CDs and has won three Detroit Music Awards. Paul also recorded three new age albums in the late 1980s with guitarist Paul Sihon. All of his recordings have been featured on nationally syndicated public radio stations including the #1 show, “Jazz After Hours.” This will be the last program until October so please plan to join us for it. This will be the largest sale of media for this year, so this is your chance to stock up. We have had some great donations which we are offering at reduced prices as well. VHS tapes will stay at their bargain price of 25 cents each or 5 for $1. In the children’s area we will have some reduced prices on audiobooks, down to 50 cents each! And any newly received books and media will be priced and ready for purchase! As always, we will have freshly stocked shelves of fiction (paperback, hardcover, mystery, western, short stories, large print, etc.), nonfiction (home repair, history, arts & entertainment, travel, religion, sports, hobbies, cookbooks, language & literature, poetry, pets, health & fitness, etc.), and magazines. FOLD would like to ask for your support in two areas. First of all, we are in great need of children’s books for the sale, so if you have some you can spare please bring them in. Secondly, monetary donations are always needed and gratefully accepted. With rising costs, every dollar counts, so please remember FOLD when you are feeling extra generous! This upgrade is another step toward ensuring that we provide our users with the best services possible. The new catalog is now live and is fully operational for searching for books and placing holds. The old style catalog has become our “Classic Catalog” and will remain available for the time being to help ease the transition. It can be found above the new catalog’s search bar. Some features included in our new catalog are a graphic display of search results, digital contents (ebooks are an example), a better browsing experience, and inclusion of database searching resulting in a more robust search. And the catalog will even help you out if you misspell or mistype a word by recognizing what you meant and giving you a “did you mean” suggestion.
