Mark’s Remarks Easter is the greatest and the most important feast in the Church for three reasons: 1) The Resurrection of Christ is the basis of our Christian Faith. It is the greatest of the miracles, for it proves that Jesus is God. That is why St. Paul writes: “If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain; and your Faith is in vain” (I Corinthians 15:14). “Jesus is Lord, he is risen” (Romans 10: 9), was the central theme of the preaching, of the Apostles. Jesus prophesied his Resurrection as a sign of his Divinity: “Tear down this temple and in three days I will build it again” (John 2:19). The founder of no other religion has an empty tomb as Jesus has. Besides, the Jews or the Romans could not disprove Jesus’ Resurrection by presenting the dead body of Jesus. The Apostles and the early Christians were absolutely sure about the Resurrection of Jesus. Otherwise they would not have faced martyrdom for a dead leader lying in the tomb. The sheer existence of a thriving, empire-conquering early Christian Church, bravely facing and surviving three centuries of persecution, supports the truth of Christ’s Resurrection. 2) Easter is the guarantee of our own resurrection. Jesus assured Martha at the tomb of Lazarus: “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me will live even though he dies” (John 11: 25-26). 3) Easter is a feast which gives us hope and encouragement in this world of pain, sorrows and tears. It reminds us that life is worth living. It is our belief in the Real Presence of the Risen Jesus in our souls, in His Church, in the Blessed Sacrament and in Heaven that gives meaning to our personal as well as our communal prayer, strength to fight against temptations and freedom from unnecessary worries and fears. Thank you to all who made the season of Lent and the beautiful and solemn liturgies of Holy Week and Easter the celebrations of faith, hope and love that they have been. Thank you to the entire parish staff, student interns and volunteers for your extra time and energy. On Sunday, April 19, Fr. Jerry Ploof will celebrate his 40th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood at the Noon Mass at St. John Church & Student Center. Please plan to attend and let Fr. Jerry know what a gift his ministry and presence has been to our parish community at St. Thomas & St. John. Many blessings to him in the years ahead, which we hope he will continue with us here! He has been a great friend and mentor as a brother priest. Next Saturday, April 11 at 10:00pm EWTN will air a one hour documentary on my uncle, Fr. Joe Walijewski. His cause for canonization was opened two years ago in recognition of his ministry in South America and the impact it continues to have today in Bolivia and Peru. The documentary was produced by Bob Dolan who is the brother of Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York. It was an honor for me to be part of the production. For more about the story and the life and legacy of Fr. Joe visit www.frjoeguild.org. Have a happy and blessed Easter Day. Onward to Pentecost! Books Available The Little White Easter Booklets (from the Diocese of Saginaw) are available in the back of Church to help you continue your celebration of the entire Easter season beginning today through the Feast of Pentecost. These are a great follow-up to the Little Black Lenten Booklets with the same 6-minute-a-day reflection for each day of the Easter season! Also available in the back of Church are A Minute in the Church booklets (Volume II) by Gus Lloyd, which offers one-minute answers to questions about the Catholic Faith. Please take a moment to pick up a copy of one (or both!) of these helpful booklets. The Parish Buildings and facilities will be closed on Easter Monday, April 6. There will be one Mass at 6:30am at STA. There will be no Mass or Reconciliation at SJSC. Due to STA School Spring break, there will not be a 9:00am Mass at STA on April 8 or April 10. 2 Offertory Actual Offering through March 22 Budgeted Offering through March 22 Year-to-date Deficit Give the Gift of Faith This Easter $1,747,547 $1,754,365 $6,818 Please Note: The fiscal year began 7/1/2014. Christian Service - Matthew 25 The Matthew 25 collection on Easter Sunday will be split between two recipients: Dominican Sisters-The mission of the Dominican Sisters of Peace in Kingston, Jamaica, provides emergency food and medical assistance for elderly persons and summer programs for children living in extreme poverty. The people served include families living at a landfill in west Kingston. CNEWA-support for the two remaining Catholic hospitals in Baghdad. They will provide medical equipment, medicine and support for care of poor and orphaned children. April 12: Macheo provides lifesaving nutritional feeding to prenatal mothers and infants through three months in the poorest slums of Kiandutu, in Kenya. They also provide medical care to prevent infant and maternal death. Thank you for your generosity! St. Vincent DePaul Today, as we celebrate the feast of Easter, we find the challenge of also seeing and believing the resurrection that comes through our own lives of self-sacrifice which brings new life to others. Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will show the love of the Risen Christ by bringing your love to those who live in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread. Operation Rice Bowls If you have participated in this wonderful almsgiving experience during Lent, we ask that you return your boxes to the parish office at either site so that we can forward the funds collected as a parish family to Catholic Relief Services. This Catholic agency funds many worthwhile and much needed projects and emergency-relief efforts throughout the world. Throughout the year, individuals from the East Lansing and Lansing areas as well as the MSU campus approach our parish with an interest in learning about the Catholic Church. They are all ages with multiple backgrounds. But they do have one of two things in common. Either they are approaching the Catholic Church because of someone they know. Or, they are inquiring because they have been touched by the spirit of this community, the enthusiastic singing, and the homilies at one of our weekend Masses. This Easter take a few moments to consider someone you could invite to go to church with you or someone you could invite to learn more about the Catholic Church. It could be your spouse, a boyfriend/girlfriend, a family member, a neighbor, a classmate. Most people are timid about approaching the Catholic Church. That is why your invitation can be so helpful. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process which helps people learn about the Catholic Church, and, if they wish, eventually join the Church. If you, or someone you know, has any questions about the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), or would like to discuss the possibility of joining the next group of inquirers, call Pete Ries at 351-5460, ext. 1328 or e-mail him at [email protected]. A new group of inquirers will begin Tuesday, May 12, 7:00 - 8:30pm and Sunday, May 17, 2:00 - 3:30pm, both at St. John Church and Student Center. Individuals choose the time which best suits their schedule. Prayers for the Sick & Deceased Please pray for all those who are ill, especially Fr. Jake Foglio, Sarah Taylor, Pam Czubak, Marlene Walser, Lisa Nestor, Frank Tuma, William Holtgreive, Susan Peters, and those listed in our book of prayer. We pray that those who by their sufferings shared the passion of Christ and may share fully in the victory of Christ’s exaltation. We remember Dr. Francis Horvath, Dorothy Dale, Carole Ann Orr, Bill Collins, and Taylor Wood. 3 St. John Student Center - Home of the Sr. Dorothy - [email protected] Director of Campus Ministry Katie Diller - [email protected] Director of Student Outreach Catholic Spartans Sr. Dorothy’s Spiritual Nourishment One Student’s Alternative Spring Break: Turn up the Volume For Spring Break this year, I went to Camden, New Jersey on Alternative Spring Break and served at DeSale’s Service Works with an amazing group of people. This is my third Alternative Spring Break and my second time going to Camden. While each ASB has its own unique experiences, challenges and blessings, one thing that has stayed constant in the groups that I have been a part of is the volume. Every year someone comments on how loud we are. At first, I felt the need to apologize because as a naturally excited and outspoken person, I often catch myself using my outside voice when I really shouldn’t be. However, after a lot of thought, I came to the conclusion that maybe being loud is not a negative but rather a positive in the case of ASB and I began to realize that it wasn’t just our voices that carried but everything else as well. As Catholics, the students of St. John go on ASB because they have a desire to serve God’s children and as Spartans, they have the desire to make a difference because, as we all know, “Spartans Will”. However, as Catholic Spartans we take our faith and add in our “expect loud, respect loud” mentality and create a community of people so on fire for life and for the Lord that it is impossible for our volume not to be noticed by others. Those who go on ASB, even if they are not naturally boisterous individuals, like myself, are loud in their excitement when they share their gratitude with others. They are loud in service because Catholic Spartans put in 110% of their heart to whatever service they are performing. They are loud in late night reflections and game nights because one of the best parts of ASB, as well as St. John in general is creating community and forming bonds that last. They are loud through the love they show to those they serve, and they are loud in their commitment to living the way Christ taught them. If there is anything that I have learned at Michigan State, at St. John, and through my ASB experiences it’s to never quiet my desire to serve others or quench my passion to live through the words of Christ and follow the Lord’s path for me. I’ve learned that “Spartan’s Will”, but Catholic Spartans do with a love loud enough for everyone to hear. This Thursday, April 9, the discussion will be on “An Interview with Cardinal Walter Kasper -Merciful God, Merciful Church.” commonwealmagazine.org During his first Angelus address, Pope Francis recommended a work of theology that “has done me so much good” because it “says that mercy changes everything; it changes the world by making it less cold and more fair.” That book is “Mercy: The Essence of the Gospel and the Key to Christian Life”, by Cardinal Walter Kasper. He was interviewed by two of Commonweal’s editors; the interview can be found online. We meet from 5:30-7:00pm in Room 12 (Library) at St. John. Faustina: The Apostle of Divine Mercy On Sunday, April 12, the Second Sunday of Easter, we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday, as established by Pope John Paul II. Join us on Monday evening, April 13, 7:00pm, in the Baraga Room at St. Thomas Aquinas, for this DVD presentation on the life of Sister Faustina Kowalska, a member of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, based on her experiences recorded in her spiritual diary. She received from Our Lord the visions of Divine Mercy early this century, and was both beatified and then canonized in 2000 by Pope John Paul II, making her the "first saint of the new millennium." Speaking of Sr. Faustina and the importance of the message contained in her Diary, the Pope calls her "the great apostle of Divine Mercy in our time." Today, we continue to rely on Saint Faustina as a constant reminder of the message to trust in Jesus' endless mercy, and to live life mercifully toward others.
