Independent Electoral Commission Decision upon Akashdeep Brar, Erik Hadekær, Kayode Fatoba, Arjan Mundy, Hassan Liaquat, Karan Thukral M01 Complainant : Melissa Lee Respondent : Akashdeep Brar, Erik Hadekær, Kayode Fatoba, Arjan Mundy, Hassan Liaquat, Karan Thukral Issues : Postering in the Tim Hortons Cafeteria Space Decision : $5 fine to all candidates, removal of offending materials Appeal outcome : Fine against Karan Thukral dismissed Reasons [1] On March 15th, the IEC received a complaint from Melissa Lee that the aforementioned candidates had a considerable campaign poster presence within the Tim Hortons Commercial Space in the West Mall Complex. Photo documentation was included. [2] As per the Candidate Handbook Page 12, Permissible Locations Campaign Materials may not be posted in Private Businesses. Campaign Materials may not be posted in Cafeterias. [3] The IEC settled on a 5$ fine payable to the SFSS Food Bank as appropriate for all candidates in question, alongside the immediate removal of all offending materials. [4] On March 23, Karan Thukral came into the IEC office requesting a hearing. It was completed on the spot with CEO Sanchez and Commissioner Shepherd. [5] Karan’s posters were not wholly within Tim Hortons cafeteria space but were in the door frame region of the area. CEO Sanchez reviewed the photographic evidence to that effect. [6] Commissioner Shepherd dismissed the fine against Karan on these grounds.
