Exalted Ruler’s Message
The week after April 1 can be a little trying around an Elks Lodge. As everyone should know, your old dues card expires on March 31 and a new one is
required on April 1. If you don't have your new membership card you cannot
enter the property except to pay your dues. You cannot enter as a "guest".
There is no grace period for in-state members. These are the national rules.
This year, as most years, we had our share of hiccups such as dues notices not
being received as well as members mailing their checks too late to be processed by the April 1 date. We try to be as accommodating as we can but still
work within the national rules. Many members whose checks were in the mail
agreed to pay their dues again at the door with the Lodge returning their original payment when their check finally arrived. Most were happy with this arrangement especially some of our younger members. This was the first year
for our new secretary Mike Rathmann to process the payments and mail out
the new cards. It's a tough job hand processing over 1,200 dues cards in a relatively short time. All in all, Mike did an admirable job and we're already discussing ways to make the process even more efficient next year and avoid
some of the glitches.
On April 10 and 11 with less than a week's notice, the Lodge hosted an "after
party" for a group that performed a concert at the Amphitheatre. Not truly
knowing what to expect and with the hall ending up at maximum capacity, our
house manager, Dennis Ball, (working with a skeleton crew of volunteers) put
together one amazing event. They worked into the early morning hours,
some not getting to sleep till 4am! This Lodge owes a tremendous "Thank
You" to Dennis and his crew as well as a personal thank you to Lee and Cindy
Ebersole for supervising the parking for the event. A round of thanks should
also go the party attendees themselves for being well-behaved and even helping clean the grounds Sunday morning. Needless to say our Lodge made a
good amount of money. Come to the May 6 meeting and find out how much.

Our Order faces a lot of challenges and to help you understand more about
them I urge you to visit our state's website: www.floridaelks.org . Read the
state secretary's remarks under "Carl's Corner". Read the commentary at:

-to-fix-ourselves. This one will really give you some good information regarding what is going on within the operation of our Lodges and why some
things are being done they way they are.
Coming up May 16 is our first "Paula" Ball dedicated to the memory of
former Eland Vice President Paula Satrang who passed away last year.
With a theme of a "White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation" this annual
charity event sounds like a fun way to remember Paula and her vibrant, never
-met-a-stranger personality. All proceeds will be donated to the Children's
Therapy Services. Tickets are $25 per person. Contact PER Randy Stay at
904.347.7858 for tickets and more information.
Last month I was a little overly optimistic on the completion date for the Tiki
Bar restrooms so this month I'll simply say, "Coming Soon".

Lists of current membership candidates (new, transfers or reinstatements) are posted on the Lounge Bulletin Board. Members wanting to
comment on a prospective candidate should contact a Lodge Officer or
send an email to: [email protected].
A list of bills-to-be-paid will be posted in the Lounge on the Monday
before each meeting. Detailed budget info is available at the meeting.
A delinquency list is posted in the Lounge; remind people you know on
the list to pay their dues or contact the Secretary if there is an issue.
A mailbox has been placed in the Lounge area for mail to the Secretary
or one of the other Lodge officers.

Eland Message
To my fellow Eland Members, and spouses of Elks:
I would like to wish a Happy Spring to all of our Eland members. Last month
I had an officer update that missed the bulletin deadline, so I would like to
start by acknowledging and thanking Ethel Picknally for taking on the office
of Historian for this year. I know she will do an excellent job in recording
our activities.
In May Eland will be assisting the Elks with the First annual Paula’s Ball, a
fundraiser in honor of Paula Satrang Ball, for her favorite charity “Children’s
Therapy Services”. I hope many of you can help with the decorating and
attend this prom theme event.
Our next big event will be our annual Luau in July – stay tuned for further
details as to how you can help to make this another big success.
We are putting out the Welcome Mat for any new members. If you are the
spouse of an Elk and want to know more about Eland, or how to become a
member please feel free to call or email me. You can also talk to any Eland
during our Monday night cake sales. We meet the first Wednesday of the
month at 7:30 pm, the same night as the Elks General meeting. Make it a
family affair and come join us for some fun and camaraderie as we raise
funds to help the children – the more the merrier.
Come join us as we work to fulfill our mission “Hearts and Hands Helping
Children”.

Elk of the Month
The Elk of the Month for May is Terry Bennett. When ER Dean
sent out a request for parking help, Terry was the first to reply.
Additionally, ER Dean met Terry for the first time as he was walking
into our parking lot and Terry explained that he only lived a few
blocks away and not driving his car to the Lodge would give us one
more parking space to sell. Great spirit Terry and a big Thank You!
OUR POW/MIA TABLE
We are lucky to belong to an organization that honors veterans the way we
do. Elks Lodge 829 knows that respect for veterans begins and ends with
recognition of POWs and MIAs. They are the gold standard for acknowledging our debt for freedom.
The Lodge 829 “Table set for one” is one of the most serious and elegant
settings to be found anywhere. My sincere congratulations and gratitude to all
the Elks who established this important shrine and to those who maintain it. In
the past few years, I have been privileged to know Elks such as Michael Rothfeld, who donated the poignant image of the two old vets reminiscing at a memorial wall; Tammy McGarrigan, who contributed the legend of symbolism of
the elements in the table setting; and Randy Stay and his helper Tom Hagee,
who accomplished the recent upgrade.
Stand before this table for a quiet moment now and then and listen to the
sentiments your heart may prompt. Whatever your experience or depth of
commitment to our POWs, MIAs, and all veterans, you will be rewarded with
a reminder of just how lucky we are to be Americans – and Elks.

FEYC Summer Camp
We will be sending approximately 24 children to the FEYC this summer. Thanks to all who sponsored a child. Your sponsorship is greatly
appreciated by all these children. In many cases they would not be
able to go to camp without our support. This is a GREAT experience
for these children.
THANKS AGAIN for YOUR SUPPORT.
We are planning a bus trip for September of this year. If you are interested in going on this trip please contact me.
Thanks to all Brothers and Sisters for your donations to the Florida
Elks Youth Camp with your renewal membership. It is never to late
to donate money for the camp. Please continue with your donations
of games, sports items and other things that are appropriate, for the
9-13 year old children who attend our Florida Elks Youth Camp. They
have requested that we not send clothing, as they wish to purchase
new clothing items for the less fortunate campers. We continue to
need donations, particularly SPORTS equipment that can be used at
the camp. Keep them coming!!
