Building Council
The Tennessee Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is seeking an experienced, highly capable
individual who excels in non-profit management to serve as a full-time Executive Director for the 501(c)(3).
The Tennessee Chapter formed this spring following the official merger of the East, Middle, and West
Tennessee Chapters of the USGBC. The former regional chapters will now be called “Branches,” and the
leadership of these Branches will work closely with the Executive Director and Chapter Board of Directors to
promote buildings, communities, and landscapes that are environmentally, fiscally, and socially responsible.
The Executive Director’s primary duties will include responsibility for chapter administration and financial
management, event planning, communications, and membership support consistent with the vision, mission,
and strategic plan of the Chapter. Working alongside the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will play a
central role in establishing the foundation for a successful not-for-profit organization that unites the interests
and roles of the three regional branches under the new State Chapter. The primary work location for
Executive Director may be anywhere within Tennessee.

Job Description
Organizational Management & Board of Directors (20%)
1. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors (“Board”), and is responsible for the
achievement of the Chapter's mission, strategic plan, and financial objectives. The Executive Director is
expected to continue to develop a thriving organization by growing the Chapter’s membership,
expanding and improving the programs and services offered to the members and the community,
increasing fundraising, and by providing a highly-visible presence for the organization.






Generally perform duties normally associated with the Executive Director of a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation.
Attend and participate in meetings of the Chapter Board as a non-voting member.
Serve as a primary staff contact to the Board.
Support the Board with materials necessary to perform its leadership role.
Prepare monthly Executive Director Activity Reports including measurable results.
Attend and participate in 2 Branch Leadership Team meetings per year.







As needed, attend and participate in Chapter committee meetings and Chapter events.
Implement Chapter policies and procedures with approval of the Board.
Implement Board-directed goals and strategies.
Manage Chapter staff, including interns, to provide effective use of staff time for the benefit of the
Chapter.
Prepare Chapter annual report for membership, stakeholders
Ensure appropriate and adequate insurance coverage for the Chapter and Board.
Ensure compliance with all State and Federal regulations.
2. In conjunction with the Board Treasurer, Branch Leadership, and committee chairs, supervise the
financial management of the Chapter, including:


Budget development, monthly financial reporting and analysis, and budget monitoring to ensure
fiscal responsibility and sustainability.
Maintenance of the Chapter’s 501(c)(3) tax exempt status.
Revenue Development (40%)
1. In conjunction with the Board, develop and implement a fundraising strategy and serve as the primary
point of contact for donors and partner organizations. Strategy shall include, but not be limited to, the
following:





Solicitation of corporate sponsorships
Solicitation of individual donations
Actively identifying, pursuing, and securing grants
Developing and sustaining a paid membership program
Organizing workshops and programs.
Branch Support (30%)
1.
Work with the Board, Branches, and Committees to organize events and activities aligned with the
strategic plan that educate Chapter members and the community, including but not limited to:

Membership meetings, educational events, technical workshops, building tours, user groups,
newsletters, website, special projects, and public events
2.
Help increase volunteers from membership, partner organizations, and the community.

Work with the Board, Branches, and Committees to raise visibility of Chapter and elevate its relevancy
within the community





Develop partnerships and alliances with government, community and private entities to further
Chapter goals and objectives.
Assist chapter expansion through branch development.
Serve as informational conduit about green building practices, standards, market dynamics and
their associated benefits.
Serve as Chapter representative to local, regional, and national constituencies.
Assist member development in various practice sectors, including new construction, existing
buildings, commercial interiors, neighborhood development, healthcare, and other practice areas
that are not well represented within the Chapter.
Connection to USGBC National, USGBC Southeast, and other USGBC Chapters (10%)

Collaborate with USGBC National, USGBC Southeast, and USGBC Chapters.






Serve as point-of-contact to and collaborate with USGBC National and other chapters. Stay
informed on chapter best practices and chapter-related issues.
Participate in Chapter staff and Executive Director conference calls.
Use the Chapter’s website and Yammer site to update and manage Chapter information.
Complete and submit annual report and associated documentation to USGBC National
Maintain connectivity to local community and community leaders within the state.
Ensure compliance with Charter requirements.

In addition to the timely and effective execution of duties as outlined above and developed over time in
collaboration with the Board, the Executive Director’s conduct must reflect and advance the integrity and

Professional Conduct: The Chapter aspires to embody characteristics of inclusiveness, civility,
transparency, and accountability in its deliberations and activities. We expect the Executive Director
to establish and maintain open and participatory dynamics as a leader of the organization.
Travel: The Executive Director will be asked to travel within the state and to regional and national
events sponsored by the U.S. Green Building Council, such as SERC meetings and Greenbuild. The
Executive Director is expected to make attempts to attend such events and be a visible presence on
behalf of the Chapter.
Primary Work Location: The Executive Director may select as his or her primary work location his
or her home or any office that the organization may have in the state. The Executive Director is
expected to be accessible and available to the Board of Directors and Chapter members during
normal business hours and may be required to meet at various locations outside his or her primary
work location as necessary and convenient for members of the Board of Directors and Chapter
Members.
Professional Development: The Chapter intends to maintain a cutting edge awareness of green
building practices and linkages to sustainability and livability considerations. Education is integral to
this leadership position. The Executive Director will be expected to actively work to obtain LEED®
Green Associate or LEED Accredited Professional credentials within 12 months of his or her hire, if
not already obtained.
Institutional Presence: The Chapter prioritizes a high degree of professional and personal decorum
in its public and private interactions. We expect the Executive Director to establish and maintain a
stellar image of the Chapter in materials, presentations, and personal conduct.
Sustainability: The Chapter seeks to integrate sustainability considerations within facets of
business, education, and outreach. The Executive Director, along with the Board, should ensure a
“Walk our Talk” attitude in pursuit of the Chapter’s Mission, including taking into account the Triple
Bottom Line (People, Planet, Profit) when making organizational decisions.
