We Gather for Fellowship Coffee/Donut Fellowship Time: 9:15 - 9:30 a.m. We Gather for Bible Study Adult I Sunday school meets at 9:30 a.m. in room 8 (Library). by Dr. Bill Turner "Uprooted and Grounded" was my sermon topic for the Cambodian Baptist Church of Houston when they dedicated their new building back on May 3rd. Practically all of these folks were uprooted from their homeland years ago when they came to America. But now, they are grounded in a new place - not just in this country, but in their relationship with Christ and with a fellowship of Christ's people. Today, I'm remembering another uprooted crowd which -nearly six years ago - became grounded in Christ's people known as Faith Fellowship. So let me refresh your memory about what this means now . . . for us . . . as we look ahead. First, it's about a STORY - that the great God who made everything that is, is a seeking God who loves us and comes to us in Jesus Christ to forgive us and to give purpose to our very existence. We've heard that story - we've believed it - and now it shapes our lives. So when we join a church, we affirm that humanity's most basic need - the need for a personal relationship with the living God - has been met for us through faith in Christ. AND, as we worship, study, pray, laugh, cry, and learn together, we begin to stretch and grow in understanding and in commitment. Living Faith Sunday school meets at 9:30 a.m. in Room 2. We Gather for Worship Sunday Worship: 11:00 a.m. Children’s Church: 11:15 a.m Child care is available. We’re Looking Forward… May 20 – Lunch at Sage’s and visit to Wilson’s Nurseries. Plan to meet at Wilson’s at 11:30 a.m. Call Rachel Jones, 223-4182 to let her know that you are going or if you need a ride. May 24 - Bill Boughton’s family and friends are hosting a Birthday Celebration reception for him, Sunday afternoon, May 24, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Liberty Ridge Senior Living, 701 Liberty Ridge Road. You are invited! May 25 – Memorial Day – Church Office Closed May 28 – Missions Committee Meeting at 7 p.m. in the Church office. Second, it's also about SPACE. In none of the hundred or so places where the New Testament describes the Church - in none of those places is the church a building. It would be at least 200 years before Christians built what we'd call church buildings. For years, the church gathered in upper rooms and houses and cemeteries and caves and wherever two or three could meet in Christ's name. So the church is always a people, not a particular space. I've said it before: you cannot GO to church you ARE the church wherever you GO. Now, would it be great to eventually have our own space? Absolutely - there's so much ministry which could be housed and launched from there. So we keep looking . . . and praying for doors to open . . . and (as I mentioned on Sunday) trusting God for the unexpected. In the meantime, however, we gather in homes and in borrowed spaces like SDA and LTS as often as we can. So we're still uprooted when it comes to space, but I believe we're grounded in Faith and in Fellowship. Which means that we have plenty of resources already to reach out . . . to invite others to join us . . . and to use our gathered times as good preparation for those scattered times in the workaday world where we live out our discipleship. Someone asked for a copy of Minnie Louise Haskins' words which I cited on Sunday. They seem appropriate for ending this column as well: I said to the man who stood at the gate . . . "Give me a light, that I may tread safely into the unknown!" And he replied: "Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way." Richard Dwyer With a Voice of Singing is the theme of our next Fifth Sunday Musicale on May 31 at 4:00 p.m. In addition to the Chancel Choir of Faith Fellowship and instrumentalists, we will have the opportunity of hearing Cantabile, a choral group of fifteen singers directed by Donna Bonner, one of our own members here at Faith Fellowship. The title of the group comes from the Latin derivative meaning “to sing.” This a capella choir will present music with beautiful harmonies as well as energetic spirituals. Cantabile was formed in 2012 and regularly presents concerts in the Lexington area. This past Sunday they were featured on the concert series of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church here in Lexington. Donna, the choral director of Cantabile was the choral director at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School since its inception until her retirement a few years ago. Those who wish to sing always find a song. Throughout the years it has spread upwards and outwards to form a magnificent addition to our front yard. The berries on this tree are large and turn a brilliant red by mid-November. However, we rarely get to enjoy them in wreaths or floral arrangements because of the annual assault of robins who (in one day) come and eat ALL the berries leaving behind a grand mess that requires a good porch scrubbing. The holly is much engrained in our Christmas traditions. One myth is that once deciduous, upon hearing that Herod was sending soldiers to kill the infant, Mary asked that the holly regain its leaves in winter and hide the baby Jesus with its foliage. The Germans believe that because the holly has two sexes that when the household's Christmas wreath is made of a "he-holly," the husband would rule the house for the coming year. But if it were a she-holly (and because of the berries, it usually was a she-holly), the wife would rule the house. You don’t need to “bow down” to wood to make a point about its beauty or its predictions of superiority.
