Iron Man Race Traffic Alert
The 2015 Iron Man 70.3 Raleigh Race will impact travel to First Baptist on certain
routes on Sunday, May 31. Please note the following road closings and alter your
route as necessary.
We will have access to all three major parking areas according to the traffic plan
we have received from the Raleigh Police Department. You will not be able to travel
East on Hillsborough Street to the church. The state government lot and the church
lot can be accessed only by traveling South on Salisbury Street, past the church,
and turning right (West) on Hillsborough Street. The church parking lot cannot be
accessed from Edenton Street; however, access to the parking deck will be open via
Edenton Street. Street parking on the church side of Edenton Street will be closed as
that lane will be blocked for runners. When leaving church, exit from the state lot and
the church lot will be on Hillsborough Street and you MUST turn right on McDowell
Street to exit downtown. Dashboard passes will be available to show to Raleigh Police
Officers who will grant you ‘Church Parking Access’ to the routes described above on
Sunday morning, May 17.
Here are the complete street closings related to the half marathon portion of the

Silent Auction a Success
Thank you to everyone who donated their space, their resources, their time, and
their energy to the Silent Auction. This year’s auction featured 300 items, a larger
number than we’ve had in recent years. Thank you to everyone who contributed
items and made that possible. Thank you also to everyone who bid so generously.
This year’s auction raised over $12,000, money that will go toward our youth

Heck-Jones Offering:
Get Connected!
From the Pastor
Just over two years ago I
wrote an article recognizing two
astonishing estate gifts our church
had received – roughly $70,000
from Sallie Sykes’s estate which
went to the Day Mission Fund
and roughly $165,000 from Steve
Smith’s estate which went to the
Maintenance Endowment Fund.
At the time, I knew we would
probably receive a little more
money from each estate, the
residue after all costs had been
covered, but I noted that the gifts
were astonishing because these
two souls had almost nothing
in this life, but left it all to the
church, and what they had turned
out to be more than anyone would
have thought.
Over the past couple of weeks
we have received the residue
of these two estates and I am
astonished again. Sallie’s estate
has provided an additional
$3,275.63 for the Day Mission
Fund and Steve’s estate has
provided an additional $99,872.25
to the Maintenance Endowment
Fund. And no, there are no typos
here. These are astonishing gifts to
the church, a total now of roughly
$338,000 from people who lived
so simply that anyone who knew
them or visited in their homes
(very small apartments really)
could never have imagined that
their “estates” could bless the
church on this scale.
The gifts will extend the
witness of these two simple lives
devoted to Christ. Mission work
will be done and our facilities
will continue to provide space for
worship, study and fellowship
because of the generosity of Sallie
and Steve. But these gifts also
call us to reflect upon our lives.
How much do we have and how
do we use it? What portion of
our wealth do we really need and
how might it make a difference in
God’s reign? When we leave this
world, will death mean the end of
our witness or will we leave some
legacy of love?
Sallie and Steve have blessed us
again in ways beyond the ability of
any accountant to measure. CC

Last May, my family joined 50 other
church members to create 10,000 meals
for Stop Hunger Now. Knowing these
meals were going directly to feed those
in need was meaningful, but what
resonated most with me was watching
my children work side by side with
different age members of our church.
My 9- and 7-year old boys packed meals
at a table with Rachel Tucker and they
had so much fun working together. This
intergenerational event connected our
families with missions and connected
them to members of our congregation
they don’t get to interact with regularly.
We now have the opportunity to
have another Stop Hunger Now event
and connect even more people, but we
need your help. Proceeds from the 2015
Heck-Jones offering will fund our next
Stop Hunger Now event as well as other
meaningful mission work (see the May 1
First Foundations for a complete list).
Our offering goal is $10,000. Please
prayerfully consider how you can do your
part to connect to this mission work.

Schedule Set for Church
Administrator
On March 16, Wayne Hager began
as the part-time Church Administrator.
After getting a feel for the ebb and flow
of the work week, Wayne has set up the
following office hours:
Monday: 8:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Tuesday: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Wednesday: 12:00 noon – 5:30 p.m.
Friday: 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Some adjustment will be made due
to night meetings or when time has
been spent in “off hours” handling an
administrative issue. Wayne’s e-mail
address is [email protected] and
his phone number 919-832-4485,
ext. 207. You may also reach him at
919-279-5731. Please contact Wayne
with any church administrative needs
or questions (facility use, church office
needs, food service, custodial, social
media, etc.). In addition, Wayne is the
staff supervisor of the new Finance
Administrator, Jodi Schmidt (who will be
introduced in the next newsletter). Jodi
is on contract to FBC through Trinity
Concepts. Since Jodi will have limited
hours in the office, Wayne can also help
facilitate answers to any church financial
questions you may have. Do be reminded
that Wayne is not responsible for the
community ministries of the church as
that position was separated from church
administration with the retirement of
Mike Morris. n
A multigenerational group gathered on May 2 for the Drum Circle. Laughter, smiles, and
catchy rhythm filled the room. We’ll offer another Drum Circle event in the fall, so keep an
eye out for details.

VBS Teachers Needed
Week at a Glance
It’s that time of year again – time to firm up teaching teams for this summer’s
Vacation Bible School. Our theme is “G-FORCE: God’s Love in Action,” and it’s based
on Old and New Testament stories which call us to move, act, care, follow, and share
as we serve God with active love.
Our dates are Monday through Friday, July 27-31, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon,
and we need YOU to make it the best week ever for our children. If you are interested
in helping to lead in one of the following areas, please contact me as soon as possible
at [email protected]:
Preschool (self-contained)
n Childcare for teachers’ children (babies, toddlers, twos)
n Rising Threes/Rising Pre-K combo
n Rising Pre-K/Rising K combo
OR, if you’re interested in helping to organize VBS as a whole, that’d be great too!
Hope to hear from you soon!

April Church Conference
Highlights
The primary focus of the April 29,
2015, Church Conference was the
financial status and procedures of the
church. Hayden James, Moderator,
used a knitting metaphor to emphasize
the efforts that have been made by the
Finance Committee, working with Burke
Raper, President of Trinity Concepts, Inc.
and the staff, to assure the accuracy of
the church’s financial records and the
appropriateness of the procedures used
in handling finances. Dennis Ellis, Chair
of the Finance Committee, reported
that the 2014 end-of-year numbers
are accurate. Final numbers show that
expenses exceeded revenue by $18,798,
without including any carryover funds.
With respect to the capital campaign, he
reported that pledges totaled $1,886,790.
To date, $837,137 has been paid.
Work is still being done to finalize the
pledge campaign for the 2015 budget.
Contribution statements for the first
quarter, along with letters to those
who have not yet pledged, are being
mailed. The Finance Committee will
work with commissions and committees
to identify proposed changes if there
is a shortfall between the final totals of
anticipated revenues and expenses. Any
recommendations will be presented to a
future church conference for approval.
Mr. Raper has been working to review
and reorganize our financial records. The
records for 2015 are now well organized
and donors should have confidence
in their accuracy. He is working with
MAKING
DISCIPLES
the Finance Committee and the staff
to make sure the church’s computer
finance software is being fully utilized,
to facilitate electronic donations, and to
assure fees paid on stock transactions
are as low as possible. The procedure for
stock gifts has been reviewed; there is
now on file an e-mail for every stock gift
given beginning in December 2014, and
all stocks received except for one in 2014
have been sold. Mr. Raper emphasized
that a donor’s name does not come
with a stock gift to the church, so it is
important that donors inform the church
when a stock gift is made.
Mr. Ellis reported that the Finance
Committee plans to implement internal
audits conducted by church members
who are CPAs to better monitor church
finances. Individual giving information
will not be reviewed as part of these
internal checks. Annual audits by an
outside auditor will continue.
Mr. James closed the discussion of
finances with two observations. First,
donors to the church gave over $2.4
million in 2014 as part of the capital
campaign and the annual budget,
an impressive achievement. Second,
while some may have had uncertainty
about the accuracy of their donation
statements or the handling of donations
made by stock sales, he is confident that
the records are accurate and proper
procedures are in place so members may
confidently pledge and give.
