(SJCC Teen Lounge) The Selling of Chametz According to Jewish law, Jews are not allowed to have in their possession any Chametz (leaven) during Passover. Literally explained, this means that before Passover, we must throw out all breads, cakes, cookies, dishes, pots, pans – anything that we used during the year and any foods not permitted during Passover! Recognizing the financial burden this would create, the Rabbis instituted the tradition of M'chirat Chametz – The selling of the Chametz. By doing this, a Jew can symbolically sell all of his or her Chametz to a non-Jew for the period of Passover so that one would technically not own any Chametz. This would thereby fulfill the law of not owning any Chametz during Passover. And thus, the tradition began that during our preparation for Passover, we place all our Chametz (food and non-Pesach dishes) in a closet or cabinet that is not opened during Passover. However, we still technically own that Chametz. Therefore, by the morning before Passover, it is customary for us to symbolically sell our Chametz in keeping with the law forbidding us to own Chametz during Passover. You may fulfill the obligation of selling your Chametz by filling in the coupon below, clipping it and mailing it or giving it directly to Chazan Benlolo no later than 10:57 a.m., Friday, April 3, 2015. Chazzan Benlolo will then add your name to the document of Selling the Chametz and you will have fulfilled your obligation. Please include a donation (if sending in for more than one family, please include a separate donation for each family) with the coupon; this monetary donation will be passed on to the non-Jew buying the Chametz in keeping with the tradition of paying the non-Jew for the service he is rendering. Upon conclusion of the holiday, any funds returned to the Chazzan will then be donated to the ongoing Ma'ot Chittim fund for needy people.
