 Hong Kong Community Garden Association 6 South Bay Close, Repulse Bay Dear Third Grade Class, The Hong Kong Community Garden Association is developing a community garden for the neighborhood on South Bay Close. Each family will be given a plot of land based on the size of their family. We would like to ask for your help in developing a garden plan for each of these families. Each family garden plan should include a garden plot drawing on grid paper, including the area and perimeter of the plot and a key of the plants. All garden plans must be placed in the community garden created by the class. Please find several project resources enclosed with this letter along with a description of each participating family. Visit the Burpee website to find plants, sizes, costs, etc. 7.
Be sure to record all plant information, create tables, plant key, grid paper drawings, calculations, etc. 8.
Use the Project Task Checklist to be sure you have met all requirements 9.
Place your family garden in the Community Garden Hong Kong Community Garden Association Math Requirements To get ready for this special assignment, you and your partner must be sure that you have the skills that you will need. A solid understanding of area and perimeter is required. Once you practice calculating area and perimeter, you will design and draw a garden plan for a family. What to do: At the computer: 1. Go to Area Explorer. 1. Read everything CAREFULLY. 2. Practice finding the area of several figures. 3. Copy your favorite figure on graph paper. Write the area and perimeter of the figure. The children like carrots, green beans, and potatoes. The children also want to grow a pumpkin for Halloween. Lee Family Family members: mother, father, 3 sons The Lee family is very proud of their Chinese heritage. They have chosen to grow vegetables that have the same color as the Hong Kong flag. Baker Family Family members: mother, father, 2 teenage sons This family likes to grill steaks outside. They want to grow their own vegatables in order to make salads to compliment their steaks. The mother would also like to grow at least two different kinds of flowers to use in arrangements for their dinner table. Ball Family Family members: mother, father, 2 daughters, 2 sons This family is a very colorful family. They like to eat foods of different colors. They want a variety of colored vegetables. If fact they do not want any two vegetables to have the same color. For example, cucumbers and peas are both green so you can only choose one. White Family Family members: mother, twin daughters This is a very busy mother. She only wants a small plot of land for her daughters to grow a few vegetables. Even though the plot is small she wants the garden to include at least five different types of vegetables. Green Family Family members: mother, father, son Like their name, the Green family likes all things green. They want their garden to only contain green vegetables. Use your resources to find some new and unusual green vegetables. Cook Family Family members: 3 adult sisters The Cook sisters have a wedding planning business. They want to grow the flowers for two upcoming weddings. The president of the Hong Kong Garden Association has given permission for the sisters to have three times their allotted space. One wedding will use pink flowers. The second wedding will use yellow flowers. Ramono Family Family members: mother, father, son, daughter The Ramono family is very proud of their Italian heritage. They have chosen to grow vegetables that have the same color as the Italian flag. Hope Family Family members: grandmother, two granddaughters This grandmother likes to cook. She wants a section of her garden set aside to grow herbs. Her grandaughters like to make salsa. They will need peppers, tomatoes and some other vegetables to include in the salsa. The grandmother also wants to include some flowers. Young Family Family members: mother, father, 1 baby The Young family is new to the area. They are just settling in and therefore want a small garden with rose bushes and a few flowers that are easy to care for. Leung Family Family members: 2 adult brothers The Leung brothers are very busy with work and not so interested in a garden. So, they want a large square garden with just 4 trees. They also want a small fence around each tree, each fence a different shape.
