Call to Confession
Leader: Our sin separates us from a holy and righteous God. Yet throughout
the ages, our God longs to wrap us in an embrace of forgiveness
and love.
People: Let us, therefore, with confidence and gratitude confess our
shortcomings in our relationship with God and with others.
Prayers of Confession (congregation prays in silence)
Assurance of Forgiveness
Leader: In faith and gratitude, our Holy God, we place ourselves in your
loving and merciful hands, trusting not only in your forgiveness but
also in your power to transform us, renew us, and set us free.
People: God’s mercy restores our lives. This is the Good News which we
celebrate and proclaim.
Communion Instructions
The communion elements are served by intinction, an ancient practice celebrated
and shared around the world. Receiving a piece of bread from the communion
steward, dip the bread into the chalice. The altar is open for moments of prayer.
Please return to your seats by the outside aisles. Gluten-free wafers are available
upon request from communion stewards.
INVITATION TO THE TABLE
Mark 6:1-13 (NRSV) – The Rejection of Jesus at Nazareth
Jesus came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. 2 On the sabbath
he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded.
They said, “Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been
given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands! 3 Is not this the
carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon,
and are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. 4 Then Jesus
said to them, “Prophets are not without honor, except in their hometown, and
among their own kin, and in their own house.” 5 And he could do no deed of
power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them.
6 And he was amazed at their unbelief.
The Mission of the Twelve
Then Jesus went about among the villages teaching. 7 He called the twelve and
began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean
spirits. 8 He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no
bread, no bag, no money in their belts; 9 but to wear sandals and not to put on
two tunics. 10 He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you
leave the place. 11 If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you,
as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.”
12 So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. 13 They cast out many
demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

Guest Preacher ~ Rev. Brian Brightly
Pastor Brightly, ordained in the New York Annual Conference, has had a varied
career – including Director of Education for NPR and work in communications for
Methodist Conferences. He produced the first Christian radio program on Radio
Moscow. He has served several appointments in the Florida Conference. Just last
week he concluded his thirteen-year appointment to Boca Grande UMC. He serves on
the board of the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home and is a chaplain for the
Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office. Welcome, Rev. Brightly!

Guest Organist and Assistant Choir Director
We welcome Nancy Siebecker as our guest organist for four Sundays. In Sarasota for
only two years, Nancy serves as a guest organist, accompanist, recitalist, and is on the
executive board and events committee of the Sarasota-Manatee Chapter of the America
Guild of Organists. From Wisconsin, Nancy was a faculty member of the Wausau
Conservatory of Music for over twenty years. She also served as director of music in
Wausau churches for over thirty years. Welcome, Nancy!

We welcome Dan Hoffman as Assistant Choir Director and 8:30 a.m. pianist. Dan is
a multi-talented musician who graduated Indiana University School of Music and also
holds a J. D. in law. We appreciate his contribution to our worship services today.

Our Share the Table Communion Offering benefits First Church’s sponsorship of
Caritas Ministries to provide emergency assistance for work boots and clothing,
prescription medications, partial utilities, and bus passes in addition to assistance
from the Caritas Food Pantry. Offerings may be brought to the communion rail or
placed in the offering plate.
Homebound Communion Ministry
Consecrated, individually packaged communion elements and a brief communion
liturgy are available in the Narthex. Take one to share Christ’s table of grace with
anyone you know who is unable to worship with us today.
