Great Spirit but .....
Roslyn showed great fighting spirit to
recover ( almost ) from two erratic
performances at Easter. On the plus
side, there was plenty of ‘character’
and ‘ticker’ to fight back from being 31 down against the students, and even
worse - a mountain to climb at 0-4
against Tech. But the lads dug it in and especially against Varsity
provided a memorable last minute
climax that netted what seemed like an unlikely 3-3 draw.
Mike Sannum played a canon shot with a double take Pen. to give us a 1-nil
lead, but to continue the green baize analogy, we were snookered for the rest of that half
as Varsity stretched to a 3-1 lead - which might have been worse, but for a brave game
between the sticks by young Tom Stevens.
It was not until the 82nd minute that Roslyn
powered back into the game, when Shea Thompson
sliced through to make it 3-2, and more than a few
watches were scrutinised as the referee played on.
Just when it seemed that Varsity had survived,
Roslyn scored in injury time as Rupert Mark carved in
from the left and beat keeper James Berry with a ripper
of a shot to tie the match 3-3.
Tahuna on Monday, was bitter medicine, and could
have been more embarrassing.

Quarter-finals drawn in Women's KO Cup
Roslyn first game of the season, and what a way to start what is to be a promising
season. Varsity came out strong in the first half, controlling the game with a confident
midfield combination and a steady back four. An early penalty to Roslyn was saved well
by new keeper James Berry, however he could not keep out the follow up effort. 1-0 to
Roslyn against the run of play. Going 1-0 down was all the motivation Varsity needed to
dominate the rest of the first half. Increasing pressure and level
heads lead to 3 goals, Truth Toheriri with a brace and captain

Varsity vs Mosgiel (Prems)
Hungry for three points, Varsity came out of
the blocks hot and were playing stylish football
in the first spell. Mosgiel were up to the task
and defended confidently to hold the visiting
Varsity boys goalless in the first half. A strong
Varsity back 4 looked comfortable in defending
quick paced and enthusiastic Mosgiel attacks.
Good defense was the story of the first half, 00 at the break. Mosgiel must have had a better
half time talk, as they came out the more
confident side after the break. Varsity,
although looking sharp at times, never found
their rhythm and struggled in the final third not

up their steady pressure and

with two goals late in the second half to win the
game 2-0.
Varsity vs Mosgiel (Seconds)
Coming off a loss to Roslyn, Varsity were
eager to play well and leave Mosgiel with 3
points. Varsity were shaky with possession in the opening minutes but quickly steeled
into their rhythm and started to control the play. A physical Mosgiel midfield caused a
few problems for the players in the middle of the park for Varsity, however the back four
were resolute and didn't look like conceding. The score was opened by Varsity center
back Tom Eminson, first on the scene after a saved free kick. Mosgiel responded well to
this and started to play some of their nicest football of the match. They managed to
bring the score level at 1-1 and put the pressure back on Varsity. Another goal for
Varsity from Will Turner-McDonald just before the half gave varsity a boost going into
the second spell. Confident and patient football from Varsity was rewarded by 2 more
goals coming from Will Turner-McDonald
and Jack Waller and the game was decided at 4-1.

Green Island Premier Team versus Northern: Played on a chilly
day at Forrester Park with a strong wind and unfortunately it
was a game of two halves. We played average in the first and
were a goal down to a good header.
Second half and we kept the ball better, and created
chances and scored five goals, Ben Kiore got a hat-trick, plus
Nathan McDonnell (2).
Man of the Match was Jack Kirkwood.
Good news for the clubs is that great progress is being
made in the planning for our new clubroom extensions.

eh?
Lashing's of sunshine met
both players and supporters at
Tonga Park on opening weekend
of the 2015 season.
The Premier match was
played on a decent track with both
teams attempting to dispel any
early season rustiness with
possession football.
It was a good-natured affair with Caversham probably doing enough to
shade possession and create the thicker share of chances to deserve a 2 nil
victory.
In the early fixture the 2nds took a half an hour to hit their stride but
eventually they opened their account through the ever-present Charles Owen. It
was a case of never looking back with 4 goals in the final 30 minutes to ensure a
comprehensive 5-1 victory.
Monday saw the Prems sit
out with the bye and the 2nds trek
out to Ocean Grove to play Grants
Braes. It was a stalemate at half
time then Ryan Fleming came on
and produced a clinical finish the
old man could appreciate.
With all eyes on the refs
watch thankfully the whistle blew
and we took all 3 points back to
Tonga Park.

Northern v Tech, on Friday
Unfortunately with Easter Friday we were missing 4 centre mids so we had to have a
reshuffle of the line up. With Ross McGreggor coming in for his first premier game,
and Freddie, Jack, Greg, Andrew, and Marco also having their first game for the club.
The club also welcomed back Angus.
The first half of the was pretty even with our back line keeping tech at bay,
and we threaten on the break. Our best highlight was having the ball cleared off the
line after about 20 minutes. But with 2 minutes to go before half time we were made to
pay from an error. Tech made no mistake and put themselves up 1-0 at HT. 2nd half
started and tech started to play a bit better.
Tech were reduced to 10 men with about 35 to go but that seemed to make
them play better! And within 2 minutes of that they had gone up 2 nil. We changed
our formation and started to throw people forward but unfortunately we left holes at
the back and tech were very good at putting away their opportunities. Final score 4-0.
But overall a good team performance. MOM Paolo Timajo.
Fletcher Cup - Friday’s game was a very
even match. The first half was very tight but
Tech edging it 1-0 with clinical finishing.
The second half Northern really bossed
with the majority of possession and chance but
Tech keeper Matt McKay pulled off some
fantastic saves. Like the first half Tech were
more clinical in front of goal and scored again
making the full time score 2-0 to Tech.
Very good game to be a part of and
very proud of my boys.
Man of the Match for Northern was young Louis
Peyroux who played his first game at Fletcher
Cup level and performed very well.
Lewis Houghton.
Monday was less good, despite taking a 1-nil
lead, Green Island hit back with pace, to turn
the tables and eventually grab a 5-1 win.
Training this week will address the
leaky defence situation

Prems had a 6-2 win over Roslyn, an outstanding first half display of
attacking football gave us a 4-0 halftime lead with goals to Tim McLennan
2, Taylor McCormack and John Curwen. Another goal to Andrew Douglas
early in the 2nd half effectively wrapped the game up before Roslyn fought
back with a couple of late goals before Tim McLennan completed his first
hattrick. Good displays from Josh Stewart and John Curwen but Man of

The Waldron Way
The path to FIFA refereeing
“I’d had a couple of knee operations so
my playing days were coming towards an
end and I saw Paul attending the
tournament and thought; that’s a great way
to stay involved in the game I love,” FIFA
referee Nick Waldron said.
After the tournament, taken out by
a Brazilian side which included the
legendary likes of Roberto Carlos, Kaka
and Cafu, Waldron got in touch with
Auckland Football and made his first steps
on a new journey.
“I started off refereeing on the
Conference level and quickly progressed
up to the Northern League level and I think I did a Premier match within the first year or two. It
was a quick transition to men’s football. Lots of players have a generally good understanding of
the laws and it was a good way to stay involved and keep participating as the third team on the
pitch.”
From those early years, Waldron has moved along the New Zealand Football
Referee Pathway having taken full advantage of a myriad of development programmes which
the now 32-year-old official says have born huge opportunity. “It’s basically a year-round
process for us now. We’re coming towards the end of the A-League and the ASB Premiership
and then we’re moving into the Oceania Champions League and I’ve also been fortunate to have
been appointed as a support referee to the U-20 World Cup in New Zealand so that’s a great
honour.
“The second half of 2015 it just continues; there is the South Pacific Games in Papua
New Guinea so there is potential to be attending that and ultimately it would be great to get to the
U-17 World Cup in Chile – that’s what is on the horizon this year.”
“We are constantly reviewing a lot of footage and watching games. The A-League has
a good process where there is a review of match incidents during the week so there is constant
up-skilling in that regard. In terms of training, we train as a unit and it’s really good. We often
get 15 at our training sessions and it’s a good way to communicate and network but also
really focus on up-skilling and improve our fitness with our dedicated trainer.”
Looking back, Waldron says one of the key ingredients in his rise is no different than
the recipe to producing talented players up and down the country: minutes logged.
“I think when you start out it’s really important to do as many games as you can.
There’s nothing like experience. When you have a situation that comes up and it’s the first
time that situation has come up, you deal with it.
“As you grow and as you learn and become more experienced, those new situations
become less and less so you can deal with them better than you did last time.
“It’s all learning. Listen to people but be your own referee. Don’t try to follow or mimic
other officials. “Everyone has their own style.” Be it Raul, Ronaldo, Zidane or Paul Smith.
For lots of Info on Refereeing and more picks of FSouth referees than you can shake a
stick at... cut and past this into your Browser.

WINTON - Wins QCM
Football South General Manager Bill
Chisholm travelled down to Winton on
Saturday with Wooliam the FIFA U-20
Mascot to present Winton Football Club
with the 1-star developing Club award
for Quality Club Mark (QCM).
In 2014 Winton Football worked
with the previous Football Manager Ken
Cresswell and Sport Southland to
determine whether they had the recommended structure and processes in place
to help the Club develop.
There are 12 sections to the Quality Club Mark that NZ Football have
determined if present in a developing Club will provide a good base for developing:
Club Administration, Leadership, Finance, Compliance, Volunteers,
Player Development, Equal Opportunities, Coach Development, Girls & Women's
Development, Referee Development, Community Development
Club President Bronwyn Campbell felt that the process of becoming
QCM accredited was a process that reaffirmed the policies and proceedures that
Winton already had in place and it felt good to be acknowledged for the hard work
her Club and committee were already doing.

At left is a 20 player Milk Cup training squad, two of whom
have yet to be named as non traveling reserves.
The traveling 18 will be named after the training camp on
the 13, 14 & 15 of April.
This has been a most difficult squad to pick for various
reason not least because of the quality of players who
presented for selection.
We have had to leave out players who in previous years, we feel, would
have made selection. There will be a flood of communications coming out over the
next few days and considerable paper work to be completed to meet
administration requirements by the Northern Ireland Dale Farm Milk Cup
Committee.

Mali Joins Dunedin Group
in FIFA U20 World Cup.
The African nation Mali, which finished fourth at
the recent under-20 African championships in
Senegal, was drawn in pool D of the under-20
World Cup with Mexico, Uruguay and Serbian
matches to be played in Dunedin.
Mali will play its first two group matches
against Mexico and Serbia at the Otago Stadium,
before playing Uruguay in Hamilton. Mali went
through the African championships group stage
undefeated, but fell 2-1 to Senegal in the
semifinal.
The other 20 teams to qualify for the World Cup were drawn into pools
last month. New Zealand benefited from a favourable draw to be pitted in pool A
with Ukraine, Myanmar and the United States.
The U20 WC kicks off in Auckland on May 30.

back in the 2nd half and could've got a share
of the points but for a moment of sheer
unselfish sportsmanship - one on one with
our young keeper the braes player tumbled
in the box - we all groaned . The ref pointed
to the spot ( no complaints at all) only for the
braes player to wave away the pen.

The Futsal team at Football South have been
working hard to develop the game and the
leagues at the Edgar Centre have become so
popular even getting a car park around the venue
proves difficult at times.
They have over sixty local refs on their
books with the vast majority under 18 years old.
As part of the development of the programme the
young refs have been assessed and coaching
points communicated to them.
The game is so quick most players don’t
have the time to dispute referee decisions as
they risk being distracted from their task and the
opposition can easily take advantage.
