Caversham, Tahuna Park Green Island v Roslyn Wakari, Sunnyvale Northern v Mosgiel, Forrester Park University v Milk Cup, Bayfield, Sunday Jackson Five - again ... Congrats to all award winners - Tom Jackson won Southern’s three major player awards, Player of the Year, Players Player, and Golden Boot. Rab And in his shadow, brother Lewis won Southern’s Youth team Players Player, and Golden Boot, to give the Jackson family an almost clean sweep of awards. Goalkeeper Josh Dijkstra won the Youth teams Player of the year, and at senior level Andrew Ridden was awarded the Young Player of the Year award. However, plans must be afoot to strengthen the national league squad for next season, and many supporters look forward to the Club AGM, ( which was postponed earlier this year ) and anticipate hearing about future plans to improve the final League placings which have been poor for several years. No doubt there will be keen interest and analysis of Southern’s balance sheet after its financial windfalls, from the continued success of Auckland City in the FIFA World Club Cup competition. Good to see Womens Football starting up again, and while Technical starts favourite, University and Roslyn will be competive, as will Queenstown, coached by Brazillian goalkeeper Danniel Bocatios. The senior mens Queenstown side has disappointed in settling for playing in Invercargill’s Donald Gray this year, and since no other clubs were keen to fill the gap, the competition now only has seven Dunedin http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ teams, and the resulting Bye each week http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ which is an anathema - not good at all. But on the bright side, The FIFA U20s World Cup is approaching fast, and Dunedin’s slow ticket purchases are a worry for the new organiser Mike McGarry who will have to hone his organisational skills to kick-start local sales - see page 11 ... Lets support the U20s, Buy your Tickets NOW ! Or did you buy them Mike ! Bill ! Get back in here... The ..... yesterday ? Ticket Sales chart was upside down Rab. Page 3 Ellis Park After the Men's Prems had a mixed opening weekend over Easter, they came up against a potentially tricky Northern side who were determined to retain the Stumpy Brownlie Memorial. Wal had asked his young side to play with some pride and they sure did - registering a sensational 9-0 victory to kick-start the season. Our new faces were all to the fore and the team played some great footy in front of a happy home crowd. Blair Bates scored four and Isaac Nicholson three and Rupert Mark picked up Man of the Match. Peewee continued his perfect start in charge of the Seconds, making it 3 from 3 with a comfortable 5-0 win over Northern. The boys knocked the ball around the park nicely with Wilkie and Mikey Taylor impressive, and the veteran keeper Watty was good again in goals with a clean sheet. New lad Nick Tooley was Player of the Day. PV's Thirds made the long journey to Memorial and shared the points in a 1-1 draw with Mosgiel. It was definitely a case of two points lost, as Roslyn dominated and had a host of chances. Ironically the goal was via an ugly Route One approach but they all count and Malcolm McIver took his chance well. The veteran of all veteran keepers Pete Evans was Man of the Match. It was a bad day in Division 3 as both the Whites and Blacks were soundly beaten. The Whites went down 1-4 Page 4 1 Tom Stevens 2 Ty. Ben Hume was busy at the back and was Player of the Day. Meanwhile Lippy's Blacks were missing a lot of last seasons Champion side and went down 1-5 to a classy Caversham side. Scotty Tierney scored their only goal and impact player Phil 'Enganche' Lyndom earned POD. The Chargers had a topsy turvy game on the Highveldt against Northern, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Ben O'Connor scored a cracker to take an early lead, but it took a late Foz special to get a point. Great effort from the young lads, with Adam 'Lazarus' Ryland impressive in goal, including saving a penalty (which was only fair seeing as it resulted from his foul) to earn a free drink http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ and a massage. The Stallions hadhttp://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ a hard fought 20 win over the Originals on the Postage Stamp. It was scoreless at half time but Marcelo and Super Sid scored in the second half. Glenn Smith was best on park for the Stallions with a clean sheet. The game was played in good spirits and a big thanks to El Presidente Gaz for marking out the pitch at the last minute. The derby in the 45's saw the Colts win 62 against the Moas. The Moas opened the scoring through Dougy with a pinpoint shot/cross, but the Colts then took control with new boy Steve POD Scott Jarvis Page 5 M. M. First game of the season for the University woman today and two great results for the ladies. At Logan Park the prems took on new entrants to the competition Queenstown. Unsure of the opposition the girls set about their business and looked to control the match with attacking football from the start. It wasn’t long before the first corner of the match led to the opening goal when Annie Gilchrist pounced on a loose ball in the box to open the Logan Park scoring. The girls continued to apply the pressure with penetrating runs from both Megan O’mally and Renee Bacon setting up there respective strikers for goals that appeared simple but very pleasing to watch! Having achieved our goal by half time of 6 goals the girls regrouped and after the break picked up from where they left off. At times Queenstown played some nice football but could not quite breakdown a resilient University defense spear headed by Annie Gilchrist who had an outstanding match. A brace by all four girls up front produced a flattering final score of 11-0 and a great start to the season. In the second game our women’s division 1 team overcame a physical Mosgiel team with a confidence boosting 2-0 win at Memorial Park. Football South’s AGM will be at Logan Park, y 31st Ma y, 2015 at 11am. Try to get along ... on Sunda Sunday May Page 8 Matt, Shane, Wilson, DMC, Mike, Hayley, Bill “NZF National teams have been to the fore recently with the U20s in Uzbekistan and the Football Ferns in St Louis, USA, continuing their build ups to their respective World Cups. I am sure there will be some positive if harsh lessons to come out of both sets of defeats. The All Whites are in a different earlier developmental stage of their build up to World Cup qualifying – although that is the ultimate aim for Russia in 2018…….so the manner of the 1-0 defeat was encouraging.” “It was great to see a couple of local lads featuring in the All Whites squad vs South Korea. The pathway from grassroots Dunedin to All White international is not an easy one and more difficult from this end of the country. Joel Congratulations to both Joel Stevens and Cam Howieson for flying the Football South flag again. The pathway for an International Manager is not an easy either, but in Anthony Hudson NZ seemshttp://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ to have a character determined to do things his way, with youth definitely getting its chance. http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ And “Kiwis” being unearthed from wherever he can get them. Also, the idea of a Kiwi playing style and philosophy filtering down from the All Whites to the under-age teams is designed to give us a better chance at success on the world stage. I think it makes sense to have a more coordinated approach to our National Teams’ set up rather every coach working on his own i.e we will start to see Hudson’s influence right through the teams. The NZF High Performance plan of “Beyond Football” is designed to complement this more coordinated approach, taking our international teams to the world – making use of the The No 1 in the World profile of our Game eg playing South Korea - a country that is also a major economic trading partner to maximise exposure & financial leverage. Andy Martin, NZF CEO, has been gathering a new team around him at NZF ready to take us forward – we have already seen evidence of that with visits from Andy Boyens and Owain Prosser around the WOFP Youth and Junior space. And upcoming visits from Rob Sherman, NZF Technical Director, and Cam Mitchell, Community Development Manager (Head of Domestic Game in NZ) – the U20s World Cup – the Football Ferns World Cup in Canada – and the U17s in Chile later in the year, so exciting times at both international and domestic levels of the game in NZ” Bill Chisholm Page 9 Sunnyvale Sports Complex No reports from Green Island this week, poor Averley was ready, poised with pen in hand - But, nothing to report. The track again was conducive to positive attacking football and the teams did not disappoint. In the Premier fixture University were quickest out of the blocks working hard to shut any space down and put pressure on the ball. Caversham managed to withstand the early pressure and the boy’s were able to find their collective feet midway through the 1st half. Seamus opened the scoring getting on the end of some excellent work by Andy Ridden on the left flank. The 2nd half saw some composed football from us and we probably controlled enough possession to earn the 3-1 victory. The 2nds played the early fixture on Tonga No. 3 and it was an absolute treat for anyone lucky enough to bear witness. It was scintillating football and in this scribes opinion was probably the best performance this grade has seen in many seasons. The first half ended 2 goals to nil, however through neat passing and ball speed the telling factor was the way in which we moved the Varsity team around the field, ultimately wearing their fitness down. This meant it was one way traffic in the 2nd half and with a further 8 goals plundered it was a stunning performance. Little bit disappointed to concede late on but at 10-1 there can be few complaints. The 3rds went up to Ellis Park to play last years Champions. From all accounts there were some very good performances with 5 different goalscorers in a 5-1 victory to the Train. The Conductor. Page 12 Master Striker, Master Keeper... Aaron Scott from WaiBOP United who was a late season signing also bolsters the squad. They join ‘keepers Michael O’Keeffe and Dan Clarke, defenders Bill Robertson, Ian Hogg, Tim Myers and Adam Cowan, midfielders Cole Peverley, Alex Feneridis, Mickael Partodikromo, and forwards Jarrod Smith, Michael Gwyther, Henry Fa’arodo and Luis Corrales. Page 13 Northern AFC The Gardens Northern V Roslyn Unfortunately we had one of worst performances I have seen and were out of the game by half time down 5-0. And to be honest it didn’t get much better in the 2nd half. We have plenty to work on this week at training to put things right and start being competitive. Well played to Roslyn who forced us into too many errors and capitalising on most of them. Technical v Milk Cup Sunday Page 19 A difficult week for Dunedin Technical this week as it mourned the loss of one of it’s young players Kieran Parsons who left this earth early at the tender age of 18 years. Kieran and his family had been involved at the Club for just over 8 years playing as a Junior and most recently commanding a regular place in our 4ths. Our thoughts are with Kieran and his family during during this time. All games were tributed with a minutes silence before the games as a show of respect and we especially thanks all the opposition, the officials and supporters for respecting this and to Kieran’s family who shared this moment at the Oval with the 4ths. RIP Kieran. Kieran ‘Victor,’ mon ami... Memorial Park Our Premier men were out at Mosgiel and the build up and intensity of this game was clearly shown in the first 45 minutes. Mosgiel seem to have Aaron’s boys on the back foot early in the game which caught the boys by a bit of a surprises and went one down in the first 20 minutes. Tech fought back to level the score with a well worked goal in the 30th minute but Mosgiel were back on tp at haf time when they caught the Tech defence napping and 2-1 down. Second half Aaron’s boys came out with a bit more belief and were on top of Mosgile for most of the half looking for their second goal to draw even, with some good runs from Taylor, Roscoe and Neeverson but some interesting officiating saw Judder red carded and another 7 yellows to to Tech didn’t help matters. The game eneded 2-1 down POD Liam Whittaker. In early game at Memorial Park the 2nds again faced a Mosgiel team which played with intensity whoever the result this time was going to be in favour of Tech. After soaking up the early pressure Tech went one up only for Mosgiel to pull one back this was going to be the story of the game Tech 2-1 up at halftime with Mosgiel pulling back to 2-2, Tech 3-2 up then 3-3 with the final score being 4-3 to Tech with 2 goals form Luke 1 from Duncan and 1 from a fired up and passionate Chris. POD Luke le Brun Page 20 The thirds had an away trip to Balclutha which was always going to be a difficult trip in the middle week of the Easter holidays with most of the team made up from players thathad just come back from the Auckland U-17 tournament. The game was pretty tight and didn’t look like there was going to be any goals until a break through from Tech 5 minutes from time saw Kurt Johnston break the deadlock for Tech with 3 minutes to go 1-0 Tech POD Taine Bayly. 4ths were at the Oval as mentioned above in which was always goign to be a draining experience after the week events. Credit to the Boys they came out fighting and were one up. But fatigue set in as the game went one and some tierd legs and drained bodies started to show.Mornington got and top and eventual final score 4-1 win for Mornington. Tech this year has bolstered it’s ranks with entering to more men’s teams into Division 4. Both teams started this weekend with their numbers splintered due to the holidays but managed to be competitive in both games. TheTech Scarfies were at De Carle park and went down 3-2 to Northern and the Tech 5ths were at Bayfield going down 7-3 to Melchester. In the Masters grades it was the same as normal for the Colts, creating chances but unable to capitalise on the chances. The Colts were De Carle park against Grants Braes. Colts went up 1-0 mid way through the first half with a screamer from Alex la Roche and could easily have been 4 or 5. In second half it could have gone either http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ way but some tierd egs in the Tech defence allowed Grant Braes to sneak in an http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ equaliser. Final score 1-1 POD Alex la Roche. The Frotters came unstuck at Culling park number 2 which was in immaculate condition but unfortunately the Frotters could not compete with Green Island and went down 10-1. Sunday sees the girls kick off there season with Prems at Culling versus Roslyn Swans at Ellis park and the Tech senior woman at Tonga. Good luck. Page 21 Rufer and Reid - Icons of NZ Will the FIFA U20s World Cup discover new stars for New Zealand ? Get along to the Otago Stadium and spot Future Stars .. Reid says the U-20 World Cup will showcase perfectly football's attributes. There is undoubted symbolism in the fact that New Zealand 2015's two national ambassadors are Reid and Wynton Rufer. While the latter is Oceania's player of the century and represents the best of his country's football history, the former is setting the standards for its present and future. As Reid said: "My first memories are of just kicking a ball about in the back yard. I've played football since I was four or five, out Wynston Reid every day in my bare feet - it didn't matter if it was winter or summer enjoying myself with my mates. I had a lot of sports I was keen on in those days, but football was always my first priority and I put a lot more practice into that than the others. That would generally be out with my dad, him teaching me how best to kick the ball, and it was definitely the sport I enjoyed most." That idyllic, football-filled childhood was seemingly shattered when, aged ten, Reid was told that he would be moving to Denmark with his mother and Danish stepfather. "I really didn't approve," he recalled. "But I didn't have much of a choice and, looking back now, it was probably the best thing that could have happened to me. Wynton, Oceania Player of the Century, with "By the time I was 13 or 14, I Pele, the FIFA Player of the Century... knew that being a footballer was what I really wanted to do. I started playing in [regional] representative teams in Denmark and then at 15 I was scouted and signed by Midtjylland. When I joined their academy at 16, I was set on really giving it a go and seeing how far it would take me." Before long, it took him into Midtjylland's first team and onwards to the richest league in the world and the captaincy of his national team. "Going back to play for New Zealand hadn't been something I'd considered too Wils Page 22 Ruf er’ s F ootball Car eer ufer’ er’s Football Career First contract as an 18 year old with Norwich City , England 7 yrs. iSwiss Pro League with FC Zurich, FC Aarau & Grasshoppers Zurich 6 years German Bundesliga with SV Werder Bremen and FC Kaiserslautern 2 years in the Japanese Pro League (J-League) with JEF United 1999 - 2001 Player/Coach of New Zealand Football Kingz (New Zealand's first professional team playing in the Australian National Soccer League) deeply, but it was always there in the back of my head," he said. "Back in 2006, I'd got a call from Ricki (Herbert) asking if I wanted to be involved. I didn't feel ready to make a big decision like "Both my mum and dad are that at such a young age, but I thought it might be Maori, said Reid something I'd like to do eventually. When I got the call four years later, I spoke to my old youth team coach, my family and friends, and decided that was what I wanted to do. As a Kiwi guy, born in New Zealand, it ended up being a fairly easy choice. I could have gone the other way, but sometimes you have to follow your gut." New Zealand fans are certainly glad that Reid went with his instincts, and the player himself has no regrets. Honoured to captain to his country, he is also proud of representing the Maori community and demonstrating to them what can be achieved in the beautiful game. "That was one of the major reasons for me coming back and playing for New Zealand," he explained. "Both my mum and dad are Maori, so that heritage is important to me. I really hope that more Maori and Pacific island kids can get involved in football because their genetics are fantastic. So many of them are big http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ ‘this might be the only time a World and strong - great attributes as a footballer. If I http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ Cup of this stature comes to New can inspire some of these kids to get involved in the game, I'd be thrilled." Zealand.’ And should those youngsters require any further convincing, Reid says the U-20 World Cup will showcase perfectly football's attributes. "There's going to be something different about every single match," he said. "Each team will bring its own philosophy and way of playing, and you never know - this might be the only time a World Cup of this stature comes to New Zealand. Hopefully not, but I think people should make the most of the opportunity. I t's definitely well worth ditching the oval ball for a couple of months to come out and watch..... The Club with the Permanent Happy Hour .... Tech turned up with Mosgiels favourite son - Abbo now ensconced in their ranks and our lads were looking forward to pitting their wits and shins against him- With Abbos depature it's seen the demise of our clubs assistant bar manager and the dissolution of the fines sub committee dealing with constant fund raising to pay for the weekly football south fines we were incurring. Alas Abbo wasn't able to play, so our lads took to Tech with relish and with the defence of TK, Hamish, Jesse & Tom solid, it gave the pacy attack licence to roam and with debutant Issac Snell having Techs fullback in his pocket all day it was no surprise when Eder skipped through a couple of lunges to pull it back for Matt Kelly to put us ahead. Rahan played a delightful through ball over the top for Isaac to run on and outpace Tech to put us 2-1 in the first half. We were more surprised than Tech to be ahead and squandered a good number of chances to put the game to bed before the break. More pace was injected in the 2nd stanza with both Reg and Riley coming on and once Tech saw red again and down to 10 for the 2nd time this season it was a first victory in a long time over the Perennial power house from 'Kilda. Seconds also had a ripper against Tech and unluckily came out the wrong side of a 3-4 ding dong with the lead changing hands. Andreas bagged a brace- one being a sweet freekick , Harry got the other and despite youngster Shaun's effort in goals and ol man Cromb in defence we couldn't quite come out on top- Lewis came on and combined well with Ifane and with a few still away coach Steve will swing again soon.
