Good to see the Juniors about to start dashing round local grounds again - a joy to watch, and to photograph, from the serious to the gigglers, they make a great advert for Football, especially on the Oval with the mass effect generated as the general public walks and drives past. They will all be aiming for a place in the ‘International World Cup’ day, later in the season - surely one of Wilson’s better ideas that has become a regular highlight for kids and parents... see pic below. Good news that Jeremy Brockie is settling at Pretoria in S. Africa, banging in goals, see page 30. As Neil Mac tends to say, ‘ Once a Milk Cup lad, always a Milk Cup lad... and I suppose David Beckham would agree too...’ Welcome to Southlands new Portuguese coach, quick off the mark, he attended last Sunday’s coaching Seminar run by NZF’s Rob Sherman, along with 30 odd, other local coaches. So, Luiz, ( see page, 7 ) who comes from Porto - not Edinburgh’s Portabello.. seems like a nice guy, and he hopes to send us a Southland page like we used to have in the ‘good old days,’ Mosgiel’s success this year, has prompted a request for drug testing. Apart from recent revelations re gherkin rubs and insertions, some sightings have been reported of the Plainsmen http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ gnawing turnips before matches, and the http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ matter will be investigated by a Special Turnips Committee headed by Van Gorp and Blair Davidson. In my home town of Leith, turnips - or tumshies - were a rare delicacy, but the main choice for improving athletes was a Rub Down with cold mince, made famous by the success at European level of Dukla Prague Pumpherston, and former player Dave Porteous ( senior that is ) not Slug. Good Luck all, Rab. Trio celebrate Goal ! Page 3 Ellis Park After consecutive wins the Prems were disappointed to fall 0-3 to an albeit impressive Mosgiel. It was a high intensity match and the boys created plenty of chances - although truth be told Tom Stevens in goals saved a penalty and a few other chances to prevent a total blow out. The boys have now got a tricky tie in the Chatham Cup to focus on, down in Invercargill on Monday good luck lads. The Seconds bounced back from a lacklustre effort last week to beat the Plainsmen 5-3. It was a funny old game with both Wilkie and Woody scoring long range screamers & Watty again required to make some key close range saves. Overall a good performance but the big game for the lads is next weekend against the table topping Caversham. The Thirds made the long trek down to Balclutha and had to pick up a couple of hitch-hikers on the way to have a full lineup. Unfortunately they lost 1-2 with Matt Hunter scoring their only goal, and Jonty MOM. The 4th Blacks finally jump-started their season in great fashion with a 6-1 demolition of Green Island. The usual suspects were amongst the goals with Chis bagging a hat-trick and Browny a brace. Jules chipped in with a goal and was POD with a great display from centre mid. The 4th Whites had barely kicked off before they Page 4 were behind. Despite a couple of goals they went down to Northern 2-5. Foxy was in fine form, managing to score a goal and concede a penalty. New keeper Dave had a busy game. Fozzy’s Chargers had their moments but a poor second half saw a 05 loss to Northern. Plenty of positive signs and soon things will click and the goals will follow. Olly was given a roaming commission down the right and was player of the day. The Stallions easily disposed of Grants Braes 4-1 1: Catlin Taylor-Lynch on the Postage Stamp, with a 2: Kate Lorenc Marcelo brace, another goal to 3: Jemma Gilbert Jas, and a clinical penalty 4: Holly Johnstone from Glovey. 5: Theresa Rhein Meanwhile the Originals 6: Holly White were decent and a bit unlucky 7: Olivia Browne to lose 2-4 to GI, with Andy 8: Jessie Clark-Grant scoring a great individual goal. 9: Alex McIntosh A couple of high scoring thrillers in the 45s - the Colts 10: Una Madden lost 5-6 to Grants Braes, 11: Tessa Lewis while the Moas fought hard 12 Jordyn Walker (c) but went down 3-4 to Tech. 13: Sammy Murrell Rob & keeper Richard were 14: Beth Fitchett the respective players of the 15: Sasha Ritchie day. 16: C.Matheson-Watts 17: Kushla Glover The Roslyn Women's http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ Prem's took to the road this week to take on Queenstown. http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ Coach W Van Gorp, After a major rain fall the events center was out of action so Mngr Sheryl Walker we were moved to Jacks Point, this did not effect the girls as we came away with a 6 - 4 win. This score could of been a lot more had there not been a several phantom fouls called against us. Goals went to Tessa, Sammy and Holly with a double each and goal of the game went to the player of the day Jordyn Walker with a roaring header from an Alex Mcintosh corner. Next week we take on top of the table Tech in which should be an intense battle.- Half Time 2 2 Another good performance today by the Women's Reserves beating the Womens White 3-1. An attacking line up, good passing and sustained pressure final paid off about 30 mins into the first half with Una Rose Madden slotting home the opener. This was followed up before the end of the 1st half with a great finish from Lily Robin. The second half was a more even battle between the teams, both sides creating chances. The whites keeper produced a couple of outstanding saves to keep them in the game. Another goal from Una made it 3-0, but the whites kept battling and pulled one back before the end. Another solid performance from the back line, and creative play from the mid and front players also. Player of the day went to Una Madden for great distribution of the ball and 2 goals. Well done girls, bring on Northern next week! - Nigel Page 5 Referees Super Sunday In a perfect world, each competitive match played would have three qualified experienced referees who officiate from an impartial perspective. For those who have read the Laws of the Game they would be aware that football matches are designed to be refereed by 3 match officials. In our Federation – we have so many games officiated by one ref – most people probably believe this is the norm. From a World-wide perspective – it’s not. On many occasions – especially in the local lower grades – it appears some people get press ganged into refereeing, and may not necessarily have the skills or confidence to consistently put in a solid performance as the referee. Being associated with the team or club involved in the match brings additional pressure – as you don’t want to be accused of bias. The aim of the Super Saturday/Sunday exercise is to display the benefits of having trained neutral refs. Coaches can coach, Players can play, there’s more chance infringements will be picked up and the refs will aim to have matches played in a safe and fair manner. Currently FIFA refs are required to retire at age 45. There has been some debate in various forums about the retirement age and whether this Best Seat in the House should be changed. Taking Ref Contacts into account that if your ambition to referee in the FIFA World Cup Finals Tournament– then you would Wilson James probably want to be FIFA qualified by age 35 years – Referee Development Officer as they like the refs to have between 5 and 8 years Footballsouth of International experience before going to the Finals 027 209 7228, or E-mail: tournament. Ignacio Sandes is now Director of Football Born in Uruguay, he completed a four years University Degree in Physical Education. Ignacio Luis Paiva started on March 14th. this year, Paiva hails from Porto In Portugal and has agreed to a 3yr contract in the role. No prizes for guessing his favourite team is Porto and equally original his three Luis favourite players are Iniesta, Messi & Ronaldo. Page 7 Quarter-finals drawn in Women's KO Cup C minus for Scarfies.... An early period of domination was not enough for University Prems to boss Green Island and the smaller mobile Islanders ran riot to eventually win 4-nil. There will be some soul searching regarding this result. Sunday, saw the conclusion of round one for the women’s premier league. The University girls were taking on an ever strong Tech side that once again started very well with tidy passing and and nice movement on and around the ball. With neither keeper called to make many saves in the first 20 minutes the game began to level out with Varsity finding their stride and stringing some great passes and movement of their own together. However the heads dropped in the 25th minute when a teasing ball was swung across the 6 yard box and the Tech striker beat our goalkeeper to the ball, glancing it by her for a 1-0 lead. To the girls credit they continued to hold onto the ball and build up pressure through possession but to no avail as the half came to an end. With the emphasis of the half time talk being to continue the way we finished the first half, the midfield trio of Anna, Sarah and Kat did not disappoint with excellent structured movement and passing that was pleasing to watch. A very organised Tech defense was put under a lot of pressure with the pace of Renee and Maryann making life difficult for them. To their credit they did a great job and merely conceded a barrage of corners that did not prove fruitful for the varsity ladies. Chasing the game for a second week in a row was again our downfall where we just could not create the final killer ball or shot. Final score 1-0 but aside from the lack of 3 points a very encouraging performance. Football South’s AGM will be at Logan Park, y 31st Ma y, 2015 at 11am. Page 9 Sunnyvale Sports Complex 4-nil at Tahuna Green Island Premier Team versus Varsity at Tahuna Park and a better effort needed from the week before and our lads certainly gave us that. We played Football that they have at training and with an even first half came out on top 4 – nil. Goal scorers were O.G. Jack Kirwood, Ben Kiore, Bob Cox and MOTM Connor Neil. Flem The Division One team (Fletcher Cup) After a week of good work on the training pitch, the 2nds took on Varsity. In the first half we managed to string along large periods of possession with Sean, Tom and Josh managing to hold their own in the middle of the park. Was great to finally hear Jeremy talk to his team. We went into the sheds 1 – nil up. Josh was a late call up to the 1st. At half time fifteen minutes of unfocused play lead to Varsity equalizing. Some inspired changes led us to firming up the middle of the park and managing to take away a hard fought win. POD went to Tenn for 2 well taken finishes. Rory Crow. The Division Two team played Mornington today and lost 1 – 3. Huge improvement from last week but still working on some of the basics. Zane Green Page 10 And a Reuters Report from our Special Correspondent Narrative Nev A top cup clash was on the cards and it certainly panned out that way with 2 sides playing at break neck speed at a less than suuny- vale. Cody was pulling the trigger at every opportunity and was just wide a few times when he turned provider after a great ball from Jesse unlocked the Islands defence and Codys rocket cross was superbly headed home by Regan. The slippery surface was causing a few problems with footing and when an islander slipped over in the box after colliding with fresh air a pen was awarded - Zane saved it superbly to give us the lead at the break. Rahan replaced TK at h/t with Matt dropping back. Morgan & Eder were superb in midfield always looking sublime on the ball and finding time space and team mates amongst the swarming island horde. To Islands credit their young team played entertaining football and never gave up pressuring and were rewarded another pen with 10 to go after Zane punched the ball clear but connected with their striker on the way. Island had obviously borrowed the Phoenix's penalty taking handbook - as they spurned another opportunity but managed to squeeze in the rebound to tie it up at full time 1-1, Island having already made their full quota of subs when awarded the pen weren't http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ able to replace their injured striker. http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ Brooky sensing the space one less player would allow brought on speedster Riley for the equally quick Isaac but Islands youngsters being barely old enough to read didn't bother to read the script and silenced the traveling supporters when they took an early lead in extra time. We threw Mike Bu & Aaron forward but weren't able to unlock the packed defence - Morgan didn't bother to pick the lock when he decided to smash it apart with a 30 yard unstoppable thunderbolt to tie it up 2-2 with the 2nd half of extra time to come. Riley showed sublime skill on the by line and then a clean pair of heels to whip in a dangerous low driven cross which when met by the onrushing Reagan was only stopped by the net 3-2 with still time to play but Islands late long Britannia style ball was meat and veg when their fast pace play could well have made and paid better dividends. A classic game with more strikes, passion and goals than a torpid mincer could ever hope to see in a full season - all in 120 minutes . A fantastic rematch in the league awaits this weekend Page 11 11 -1 win Good win for Cavvy, racking up 11 goals in Invers against Queens Park, hitmen were Lewis Jackson 3, Tore Waechter 3, Brent Clifford 2, Callum Flaws 2, and Sam Collier with one - but he says it was a beauty.. Sad news is that the team may have been kidnapped by Somali bandits, possibly hired by a rival Dunedin team - because no words were sent this week for the Prog.. Never mind, the space could be handy for those who tried their hand at recognising the ‘Eyes’ on page 31, where 18 sets of beady eyes are squinting at you, From top to bottom, they are : Terry Phelan, Mike Phridge, James Letts, Tony Martin, Ref Ed the Limp Cook, Aaron Wilkinson, Tim Horner, Eder Franchini, William Fleming, Zane Green, Mike McGarry, Tim Cook, Rhys Henderson, Luis Uehara, Richard Murray, Richard Roberts, Andrew Brook, and Wayne Van Gorp. And if reading the answers twisted your neck, sorry, just go to Dusty for a Quick Fix. Here’s a memory Lane shot... from 1988, when Otago beat Auckland 3-1 to win the Winfield Challenge Trophy are (back, from left) manager Malcolm Ferguson, physio Peter Boyle, Barry Still, Grant Plumbley, Mike McGarry, Darren Munroe, David White; front, Rod Grove, John Wilkinson, Craig Riddle, Andrew Kelly, Dave Woodward, Ian Boath, Steve Fleming, Peter Ryder, Graham Marshall and Malcolm Evans. And that dark haired guy at extreme left is Rod Grove - whose son Jared is now playing for Caversham in the FPL. Page 12 http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ Page 13 Northern AFC The Gardens Northern Prems played Cavie out at Tonga and it didn’t take long for Cavie to get on the score sheet going up 1-0 after 6 minutes. But the team rallied together and played well after that, with the midfield breaking up their play or when cavie did threaten the backs defended well to keep them at bay. And when we had the ball we played some good football. We equalised when Dave Henderson (Hendo) scored direct from a 25 yard free kick Cavie hit back 5 minutes later tho with some very slick work up front and a Bob Sammes good finish. HT 2-1. We started the 2nd half strong looking dangerous with pace out wide. The midfield continued to work hard and I thought we gaining momentum when Cavie scored to go 3-1 up. But credit to my boys as we kept going and manage to pull another goal back through Marco. And on another day we may have had a penalty with Taylor getting tripped in the box. However 3-2 was probably a fair result, Freddie in goals had another good game but our MOM was CM Greg Thurlow. It was good to have Jack Rea back in defence and Chris Bell who had his first game of the season. Good effort lads with a very solid performance ! Last week, Up at Forrester and we knew we were playing a good Mosgiel side. And inside the first 10 minutes they opened the scoring. A cross came in and it ended up in the back of the net. To our credit the boys didn’t drop their heads and they battled really well for the rest of the half and we started to look good. HT 1-0. Unfortunately we had a bad 10 minutes shortly after the break where we conceded 3 unlucky goals. Bad defending on a corner saw them somehow score direct, an own goal and ping pong in the penalty box saw them go 4-0 up. The game opened up and we should have scored at least 2 or 3 in the next 20 minutes. Missing some opportunities around the 6 yard box. However Mosgiel closed out the game with 2 good goals to see them win 6-0. Still a lot to work on for us but the boys put in a much better performance, even if the shoreline doesn’t suggest it ! Cheers Muzz. Lewis reports :The game at Tonga Park was another very tight game. We started off very well and played some good football. Cavie took the lead after 20 minutes after a through ball, where the striker went round our keeper. They then scored a couple minutes after thanks to an over hit cross that ended up going straight in at the back post. Apart from those 2 goals, our defense held up very well. Going into the break 2-0 down I was confident we were still in the game after a very good half. We changed a few things round and came out with intent and went close a few times on the break. We were looking dangerous but unfortunately just couldn't find the finishing touch which has been the case so far this season. Game ended 2-0 but very happy with the performance today as we gave a very good account of ourselves. The boys gave 100% from start to finish and can't fault their performance. Hard to give player of the day as it was great team performance but special mentions for Arron Wilkinson and Mikey Scott at the back who looked very strong and composed all day, also another good performance from young Louis Peyroux. Second half was slightly better but some lapses in defence saw us concede 3 but with 3 goals from Amelia, 2 from Elise,2 from Tess and 2 from Kate final score 10-4 to Tech. We wish Elise all the best for her travels in Australia. Swans played Northern and had a great win with 6 goals from Maggie Burgess one from P the shin Roche final score 8-1 ,Tech senior won battled out a 2-2 draw to complete last Sunday's owns fixtures. Fletcher cup boys had a very strong physical game at Ocean Grove versus Grants Braes in which can only be Sunday at Culling described as one that got away. Tech were one down at halftime which by all accounts went against the play. The lack of being able to finish in front of goal cost us the game and some interesting decisions meant the game stayed at 1-1. Craig's 3rds added a bit of maturity to their line up this week in which was going to be a key factor in the result.up against a strong Melchester team the Tech boys defended well and managed to have some good attacking spells. 2-2 was the final score with Craig feeling very pleased with his boys playing against a 12 man Melchester team. Stu's 4ths knew it was going to be a tough day at the office versus a strong Caversham team at Tonga Park. Despite some heroic play from the boys who really dug in for the whole 90 minutes was a case of holding on.9-1was the final score to Cavy. Colts played at Mosgiel in a game that sore some interesting goals.Despite no-one turning up to Memorial park to open the locker sheds so the teams could have nets and posts.(must be keeping them for the Fifa World Cup also) the Colts went one up at half time. Then Mosgiel pulled one back within a minute.an assist from Tony Boomer saw Gerry the shin deflect a ball off his head into the Mosgiel goal that was something that could never be repeated if he tried. Now Gerry the head Finnie. We had an extremely good response to our request for clubs to be involved. We thought you would be wondering what the outcome of the consultation process was. Below are some bullet points from the summary of the interviews that were undertaken by Results Consulting. · Everyone interviewed had put a lot of thought into their submissions, Support ranged from cautious to really supportive, Most people thought the home of football was a good concept. · Those who did not feel it was needed seemed most concerned that it may be a risk to traditional club football and clubs may in time lose their identity. · There was a clear message that club football should not change. People like the home and away system currently used and enjoy the culture of the club and the good hearted rivalry that club football brings to the community. · People were adamant that if this goes ahead it must not cost the clubs anything. · The majority felt it was worth looking at and developing further. · Many interviewed discussed the frustration of competing for space on city parks and felt that there were limitations to growing the sport based on the lack of year round football fields available for organised sport or for kids and families to play informally. Several site suggestions were put forward by clubs with the most popular suggestions being: 1) 2) 3) 4) LOGAN PARK TAHUNA OVAL OPOHO During the consultation a number of other issues were raised by clubs. Some related to ground condition and availability. Others were around communication with Football South. We are taking these concerns seriously and working through these to improve things. One way that clubs can help us is to put in a submission to the DCC annual plan. We have developed a simple form for clubs to fill in with their concerns and submit directly to the long term plan. The submission Forms can be easily downloaded from Football Sth’ web page. This is a way to ensure that DCC do know where there is work to be done and it can be budgeted for. Submissions close on Tuesday 28th April so please follow this up quickly if you want to take part. Reggie had a banker denied by a top Tommy save and then he blazed just milimetres over following a superb ball by Hamish who found Isaac to unselfishly square it to Reg. Cody was getting forward and shooting on sight and won a pen after being adjudged to have been fouled by ex boy Tom in the box . Tommy redeemed himself with a superb reflex save to keep the Hey, Bro ... Ponies in the match. Roslyn fluffed a few gilt edge chances to equalise. Ref had to pull himself off late in the first half and the officials were superb in restoring order. 2nd half saw another raking pass from Hamish eventually find Reg to nod superbly home and a quick break saw Reg get his 2nd a few minutes later. Roslyn still pressed and kept us honest. Zane nearly went from bass to soprano with one ballsy save so , Andy brought on Mike , Matt and Aaron to inject fresh legs to ensure the clean sheet was kept with one eye on Mondays match. The New Zealand international is the epitome of a traditional centre forward. He always finds himself in the right areas to get on the end of moves. Moreover, he likes to get his shot away early rather than take a second touch – his volley against Pirates typifies that point. Brockie sees the situation early and, in turn, that affords him more time. Whereas, a lot of our local strikers nowadays want to take the extra touch. However, more times than not, that extra touch of the ball closes down the space and gives the back division time to adjust. Brockie’s sweetly-timed volley against the Buccaneers sends a message to South Former Otago Milk Cup player African strikers at large to take risks, trust does well in South Africa their instincts and most importantly not to overplay the situation. If your shots-per-game ratio is high, you are going to be rewarded as a striker. From analysis, a lot of Brockie’s goals have come from finding the space inbehind defenders, where they are most vulnerable because they ball watch. The goal he scored against Pirates was as a result of getting in-behind the two central defenders. Brockie set himself up for that scenario, as his initial run was towards and then away from the defender. The golden rule in football is if you want the space in-behind, you make the run towards the defending player, and if you want the space in front of you to get it to feet, you make the run away from the defending player. With regards to the first scenario, your initial step must be towards the player on the ball. The defender expects the ball to come to your feet, so his inclination will be to get tight on you. As he makes his step forward, as a striker, you then make your turn. In the split-second the defender is caught, you can exploit the space - Brockie is a master of that art, as he has clearly been taught the basics well. In my view, Brockie’s composure in front of goal and intelligent runs into space can serve as a blueprint. From a young age, Brockie, 27, would have worked on his finishing and his running off the ball and into the right areas at the correct times. Unfortunately, I have found that our young players don’t have those tools in their shed because our game is predominantly based on playing in short spaces owing to many of our players developing their skills in the townships.
