In a Coaching world that has gone Cone Drill mad, it was good to see work going into team shape. strategy and good communication. Mind you, they could have been Trappist Monks playing - so silent was the group. Kiwi lads are not famous for shouting and calling - which is a vital part of team organisation and efficiency. Could do with a bit more noise too from the jingling tills of FIFA’s U20s ticket machines. Ticket sales are not too bad, but Dunedin is well known for its ‘slow draw,’ when it comes to supporting these ventures. Buy Early and invite your friends, so that organiser Mike McGarry can get a few decent nights sleep. Parking near the Stadium is never easy, so there might be scope for hostelries, bothies, bodegas, or just plain pubs to do a package - as has been done before, which includes, match ticket, pie and pint, bus to match and return - a winner all round. Modern communication is pretty sharp eh ? Tweets, Email, Facebook, Texts, and yet, I had to rely on the good old touchline chat, and some smoke signals to discover that the Chatham Cup draw had been released. Thanks to the Mosgiel secretary, http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ Shozanna Wheeler who sent me the Cup http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ fixtures for ANZAC weekend. Good to share.. The Info must have fallen through floorboards down at Logan park HQ, but all is well and the full draw is on Page 32. Good to see some Minnows entering. In the past there have been good challenges from a few grades down, well done Mornington and Grants Braes. Its also good to see that Invercargill, and Timaru teams have entered. But can’t see Queenstown, maybe we sent them a semaphore message ? Of course I’ve got my FIFA U20s tickets Rab. Page 3 Its the Sunday Evening Picture Show ... 2-1 win... Roslyn v Varsity Milk Cup Page 4 Ellis Park The Prem girls played a very strong university team at Ellis Park who were coming off an impressive 10 nil victory the previous week. We started the game strongly and created many a chance with the uni keeper pulling off several top class saves including a penalty save. Pic right, top save Tess. Against the run of play, uni were first to score taking advantage of extreme pace to go 1 up. Holly Johnstone finally got us on the score sheet with a well taken goal just before the break. The 2nd half was alot more Penalty save even with two very fit teams giving their all. Holly grabbed her 2nd of the game finishing off a great cross from Sammy. Uni pushed for an equaliser, but our back 4 stayed solid led by Jordyn Walker, and POD Kushla Glover. Fantastic team effort from the girls. Final score 2-1 up. They are lucky to be going to a Tournament that will include some highly rated youth Pro sides - good luck... Last week, Varsity firsts played Caversham in perfect playing conditions on a yet to be broken in Tonga park. With a few players still out due to the Easter holiday curse, Varsity fielded a team that aimed to frustrate the opposition and prevent them from settling into the game. They started well out the blocks, but a goal in the 20th minute from Caversham took the wind out the students’ sails. An early injury to Varsity centre back Abel Banda meant that American midfield powerhouse Michael Hurley had to see out the rest of the game as a makeshift centre back. He performed superbly in this role and eventually went on to earn man of the match. Only one nil down going into the second half the students were quietly confident they could turn it around. Varsity again started well from the blocks, but an freak goal for Caversham 15 minutes in proved to be the tipping point. Caversham maintained good ball possession for the rest of the match, slotting an easy header from a corner to make it 3 nil. Varsity got one back through a well-taken penalty by Jeremy Fong. With five minutes to go, Fong was unlucky not to slot another one in open play to make it 3-2. Should this chance have been converted it may have made for an exciting end to the game. The match ended 3-1 in Caversham’s favour and left Varsity with a few things to work on at training. Football South’s AGM will be at Logan Park, y 31st Ma y, 2015 at 11am. A game where if we played well we could have won but if players don't turn up ready to front up you will not get results. We were never at 100% until the last five minutes. Roslyn lost a man just before half time and we played worse. No disrespect to Roslyn but we played poor. MOTM Ollie Brown. Well done to the officials. Flem Division One team (Fletcher Cup) Versus Roslyn. Our team took on an undefeated Roslyn team and played some good football. Being young and keen certainly didn't hold them back. For all those watching it could have been a goal feast but with both goalies playing well goals were limited. One all final score, both goals scored by Roslyn I think. Fletty thought he owed a goal to Green Island so slotted one with ten minute to go. MOTM Tom Milton. Well refereed by Wilson James under pressure from all corners. Onwards and upwards next week. Train hard. Rory Crow Division Three. Four nil defeat against a very well organised Mornington team. Much improved performance. Needed to keep hold of the ball a little more. Nathan McDonell Jose Figueira Dumped Danny Hay Former All Whites captain Danny Hay will coach New Zealand's men's team at the under-17 World Cup in October after Jose Figueira has been dumped by NZ Football. It was announced that head coach Figueira and his assistant Paul Temple had been replaced by Hay and another former All Whites skipper, Chris Zoricich, who will be Hay's righthand man. Hay - who totalled 31 caps for his country between 1996 and 2007 - has been coaching at Sacred Heart College. Zoricich played 58 times for New Zealand between 1988 and 2003. "At this point in time we feel Danny and Chris are a better fit for guiding this team for the remainder of the campaign while maintaining the strong link to our teams further up the pathway," said NZF high performance director Fred de Jong. Over 45's. It was a beautiful autumn day. The team looked lively for the first half. 4 – 0 at half time. That's how it stayed. Ran out of accuracy and calf muscles. POD Paul Craik Last week the Womens Division One yellow team, in trying weather fronted up, introduced each other and took on Balclutha. 3-0 flattered the opposition and all credit must go to the girls for their attitude and commitment to the task. Even more praise to the ones who took the initiation dip in Lake Waihola on the way home. Trev http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ Womens Division One versus Roslyn Black. We have a very new team and were still learning each others names ten minutes before kick-off. The girls worked really hard but in the first half were out numbered in the mid field and went 2-0 down. A minor adjustment, putting an extra player in the mid field made the game a lot more even and we even created a few chances. Finished 0-2 down with plenty to work on. Lots of great performances with Anna Miskimmin picking up player of the day at centre back. 3-1 win It was no classic but the derby between Caversham and Dunedin Technical at Tahuna Park did show glimpses of what these two teams are capable of. There was plenty of effort and certainly no shortage in desire however maybe lacked at times a little in quality. That was but for a 15 minute period where Lewis Jackson showed his pedigree with some high quality finishing scoring 3 very classy goals. That effectively decided the game and the boy's will take some confidence into the coming weeks. The 2nds also faced Dunedin Technical in what is usually a very tough encounter demanding both physical and mental fortitude. This day was no different with two goals either side of halftime enough for Caversham to close out another victory. The 3rds took on Northern Winter in a seesaw encounter which saw Caversham take the plaudits scoring 7 goals to 5. certainly plenty of entertainment however definitely a few defensive frailties to work on before the next fixture. The Conductor. Page 12 Fifa World Cup to New Zealand... ? As well as thousands of fans buying tickets for the Fifa Under-20 World Cup, from May 30 to June 20 - the former head of the Tourism Industry Association, Martin Sneddon has hopes that New Zealand might host two or three of the eight pools and some knockout matches of a future FIFA senior World Cup, with the rest being hosted across the Tasman. Snedden has identified three phases to the process: get the NZ stakeholders on board with the idea, convince the Australians they could work with NZ on a strong bid, and start lobbying the Asia and Oceania confederations and Fifa. He said the first two phases would take some time but not a lot of money and would give a clear signal as to whether phase three was feasible. http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ Tahuna Park, Saturday http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ Page 13 Northern AFC The Gardens Another good start against Mosgiel, until halftime we were well in the match, only 1-nil down at the break, but the second half was a different story. We are making poor decisions, and giving away soft goals. There is no easy answer, its a question of training and working hard until we turn the corner... The Fletcher Cup game down at Forrester Park was a very close encounter. We started off the first half playing our best football of the season. For the first half an hour, we bossed the game with some great passing from Jonty Ashworth and Ross MacGregor and were looking very good. Then against the run of play Mosgiel took the lead after a lucky deflection presented their forward a chance who finished very well. Half time 1-0 down and definitely didn't deserve to be. At the break we had to take off Ross in the middle of the park which changed the game really. Second half Mosgiel had more possession of the ball, but we had the most chances but just couldn't Page 14 convert them. Mosgiel went 2-0 from a well taken corner, only for us to reply from a Shaun Richards penalty. We fought to the end as usual but Mosgiel scored again with the last kick of the game. Final score 3-1 which definitely flatters Mosgiel. Bit disappointing with the result as i thought we deserved a point at the very least but fair play to Mosgiel who took their chances. Good effort from my boys, very happy with the way we played and look forward to a tough game against Caversham. Man of the Match was Jonty Ashworth in the middle who ran all day and produced some great tackles and passes. http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ Last Week :{ Northern vs Roslyn Fletcher Cup. We started off brightly and http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ looked good playing some nice football for the first ten minutes, then conceded two scrappy goals after around 25 mins where we just didn't defend well. Half time 2-0 to Roslyn. The second half was much the same as the first. We started well but Roslyn stepped up a gear and started playing some really nice football and were reward with another 3 second half goals. Final score was 5-0 to Roslyn who deserved their win. Be good to get players back this week and have two practices to work on mistakes. Looking forward to Mosgiel this weekend. In general, the club was gutted with the weekend result, which hinged on a 15 minute spell in which we did not compete, mentally or physically. We went on to climb back into the game, and certainly had our chances to score that critical goal that would have put us back in the running but it was not to be. Yes, from local parks to FIFA; council grounds to great stadiums, the choice is yours! One of NZ's leading female Referees began because her son’s team needed a Referee. Eight years later she was Refereeing at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Page 20 2015 Dale Farm Milk Cup Following a weather affected but very profitable three day training camp on Monday through Wednesday the Milk Cup Squad had their first run out against a very athletic and competitive University team. This was an excellent test for the Milk Cup lads and also a significant outing as following the encounter the squad was reduced from 20 with two (2) of the squad players being named as nontravelling reserves. University provided speed and strength and attacking flair across the whole park and this was a serious test of the MC Squad’s defensive structure, patience and concentration. For the most part the lads responded positively and delivered in terms of what had been worked on during the training camp. This was pleasing from a coaching perspective. However, there is still significant work to be done in the remaining 11 weeks until departure. It starts with core strength, and speed and agility sessions from 7:00am until 8:15am on a weekly basis at Kaikorai Valley Gymnasium on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. They will have Anzac Weekend off and then the squad will meet each Sunday for training at Ellis Park from 10:30am until 2:00pm excepting days were matches are arranged. This is exciting but demanding times for the lads as they balance club and school training and playing commitments with NCEA assignments plus fund raising and the Milk Cup Programme demands. They will have to be well organised. For pics of the Milk Cup v Varsitygo to pages, 6,7, and 9. The 2015 Dale Farm Milk Cup Squad 1. Liam Whittacker 2. Nick Smart 3. Anton Fitzgerald 4. Domestic competitions are part of the Whole of Football Plan pathways. Strong domestic competitions are critical in both grassroots development and the more elite game as an aspirational target and as a development vehicle. The struggles of Southern Utd to compete and even exist within the current ASB National League setup are well documented. Before Southern (Otago) Utd, we have had Caversham, Dunedin Technical, Team Otago, Dunedin City, Invercargill Thistle and Dunedin Suburbs flying the flag for the deep south. While we have had the odd bit of success , financial problems and ultimately a lack of sustainability have been the norm. I can go back to the formation of the original winter, club based formation of the Rothmans National League in 1970 featuring 10 teams – the first NL for any sport in New Zealand. This first incarnation ran pretty well unchanged for 23 years (quite an achievement!). There was a SuperClub Competition for three years (1993-95). Then the introduction of a summer league in 1996. Over the years since, the competition structure has changed a few times, up to the current format involving seven franchises, the Wanderers, and the Wellington Phoenix. Where do we go from here? What about the Women’s Competition? Following the NZ Women’s team’s winning of the 1975 Asian Cup, a National Tournament for Women’s Regional Representative teams was launched in 1976. In 2002 the inaugural National Women’s League was contested between the seven Football Federations. The main challenge for any national league format is the finance involved in what is basically an amateur setup – in the early days we had Rothmans and then Air NZ as sponsors – lately it has been ASB. Continued or enhanced corporate involvement is essential. Equalising of costs is essential for any National Lg 1981 Southern participation. New Zealand Football’s futsal community has received a most welcome gift from the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the FIFA U-20 World Cup. The LOC has purchased New Zealand’s first international-standard, portable futsal pitch that can be set up in communities all over the country – either as one full size international court or two standard size courts. World famous Football players such as Pele, Neymar, Ronaldo, Messi and Iniesta all grew up playing futsal and attribute much of their success to the hours spent on the futsal court during their youth. “By purchasing this court, (NZD $56,000) we are able to tie it into our football activities across the country in the countdown to the FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015, as well as leave a positive legacy for New Zealand’s active futsal community,” said Dave Beeche, Local Organising Committee CEO FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015. He was widely celebrated for his lilting, graceful prose. Football fans will know him as the author of El fútbol a sol y sombra, or Soccer in Sun and Shadow. The book offers a cultural history of the beautiful game, using his trademark poignant verse to shape history and politics and economics and personal experience into a sort of paper sculpture. Below are some samples of his prose... not your average ODT match report eh? ‘ Nobody saw a wild wolf on the field. Disguised as an old woman, his fangs and claws hidden, he strolled along, making a show of showering innocent passes and other works of charity. Meanwhile he slipped unnoticed into the box. The net was bridal veil of an irresistible girl. In front of the open goal he licked his chops. And in one fell swoop he stood naked, then bit. — Galeano describing the famous German international striker Gerd Müller. ‘ Years have gone by and I’ve finally learned to accept myself for who I am: a beggar for good soccer.I go about the world, hand outstretched, and in the stadiums I plead: ‘A pretty move, for the love of God.’ And when good soccer happens, I give thanks for the miracle and I don’t give a damn which team or country performs it. —Galeano on his love for the sport exceeding his love for any one team.
