Dear Parents and Carers,
2015 Voluntary Contributions
Thank you to everyone who has paid their 2015 voluntary contributions. Unfortunately
we still have a large number (50.25%) of families who are yet to pay their voluntary
contributions, it would be greatly appreciated if they could be paid ASAP. Over the next
fortnight we will be issuing invoices to families who have not paid their contributions.
From the Principal’s
Current contribution breakdown: (K - 65%, PP - 41%, Yrs 1-6 - 50% Total – 49%)
The contributions are $40 per Kindergarten student and $60 per Pre Primary – Year 6 student. These contributions are
an important addition to your child’s schooling, as funds collected go towards the purchase of extra classroom resources,
or subsidies for activities during the year.
Payment can be made to the office or the classroom teacher by cash or cheque (made out to Gidgegannup Primary
School) and by direct deposit; BSB 036 075 Account No. 412258, please include your child’s surname, room no and
payment reason.
Children Who Are Unwell
We have had a number of children who have been sent to school when they have been unwell. When your child is sick
the best place for them is at home in order to recuperate. If students come to school unwell a couple of things tend to
happen.
1) They are not in a good place to learn which then creates stress and tension not only for themselves but for their
classmates and staff. Students who are unwell will be sent to the office and in turn parents will be contacted to come and
collect them.
2) They can pass on their germs to both their fellow students and staff. Students with low immune systems are more at
risk of picking any bugs floating around and therefore continuing the cycle of reinfection.
Late Students
We have a number of students who are regularly coming late to school. Being at school for the beginning of the day is
very important. Students who arrive after 9:10am are deemed to be absent
for half a day and therefore require a note.
Social Media Tips
As you are all aware social media is now a very common medium for
sharing information. While it can be a very effective way of communicating
there are also some dangerous side effects of using social media. I will
regularly post some tips in the newsletter in regards to using social media,
please discuss these with your children.

2. Don’t rely on privacy settings –
anyone who can see your content can
download it, copy it, take a screen
shot and then share it publicly.
Kindergarten Enrolments for 2016
We are currently taking enrolments for 2016 for children born between 1 July 2011 and 30 June
2012, please register at the school office. You will need to bring their birth certificate,
immunisation details and proof of address. Applications close on 24 July 2015.
Pre Primary 2015
If your child is currently in Kindy at Gidgegannup please call into the office to check and sign your child’s enrolment form
for 2016.
P&C PERENNIAL
Library Chair and Mat - Please check out the new teachers reading chair in the the library.
The new mat and chair were purchased with the funds raised from last year’s stall at the Gidge
show. This is the beginning of our library make over. Further projects for the Library are to reduce
the shelf heights in line with the reduced size of our oldest students and to move all junior books
(kindy / Pre-primary) into browser boxes. It is estimated that 10 boxes will be needed. If you can
help with these changes in any way please contact Mrs Pettit our school librarian or Steph
Degens (P&C president).
Canteen - This week’s canteen will be brought to you with the help of families from Mrs Denning’s class. Please
fill out the sheet on the door of the class if you are able to help on Friday.
Cake Stall - This Thursday there will be a cake stall at the assembly. This will be run by the families of
Mrs Anspach’s pre- primary class. All money raised will go directly to the class to fund special activities /
programs.
Picture Plates – Last call for orders for Picture plates. Please return your form and money to either the Kindy or Room
1 if you child is going to make one of these beautiful plates. Some Mums have mentioned that they still have the ones that
they made at Kindy! Contact Steph Degens (9574 6610, 0417 506 947, or [email protected]) if you have any
queries.
Mothers Day Stall - Thanks to everyone for making the Mothers Day Stall such a success again this year. The total
amount of money raised from the Stall and the Raffle was $950!!! The kids really enjoy it, and put lots of thought into their
choice of gift. That's what makes it so special. I'm sure there were lots of happy Mums on Mother’s Day.
Big thanks to the parents who helped prepare and run both the stall and raffle. Wonderful to see so many parents
volunteer their time to make it run so smoothly. It was really appreciated.

Enhancing Self Esteem in Adolescents
This is a course for teachers and others who work with adolescents.
Course Aims:
Adolescence can be a difficult path for many young people as they
attempt to find their own identity in an ever changing and challenging
world. Based on recent research, this course updates participants’
understanding and provides practical and creative ways that teachers
and mentors can seamlessly integrate assistance to adolescents within
their day- to- day roles.
The course focuses on practical application - teachers will learn strategies aimed to help
adolescents improve their mental wellbeing and build healthy self-esteem. Although this course
aims to empower and up-skill the individual teacher, a number of simple and effective strategies
and tools could be adopted by whole of school with a view to healthy self esteem culture.
The course covers –

how to assess what’s going on for the adolescent while establishing an alliance with them
how we can roll with the student’s resistance to engaging with us
ways of working with adolescents who are depressed, angry, disengaged or emotional
Highlights will include –

patterns difficult but not impossible
Ways that people enter change via the ‘Change Triangle’
How to identify 10 Unhelpful Thinking Styles that appear in the language of young people and how to

Gaining a deeper understanding of anger and learn 4 strategies that young people use to mismanage
their anger that can keep them stuck in feelings of low self worth
Learning fun psychological strategies that help us defuse from the unhelpful ‘stories’ that our minds
create that cause us stress and unhappiness
Active listening skills and empathic responding. Experience through activities why these often
neglected aspects of communication are vital to connecting with an adolescent
