Dear Parents:
I can’t believe that April is already upon us. Thank you to the amazing staff and PTSO for a wonderful A+
visit on March 23rd and 24th. Everyone had such amazing things to say about our incredible school. We
are truly an awesome community!
Beginning on April 13th through April 17th (make-ups on April 20th and 21st) the new standardized test Az
MERIT (replacing AIMS) will be taken by all 3rd through 6th grade students. This website will give you
sample items and information about the tests: www.azmeritportal.org. The test is very different from
AIMS. Some questions will have multiple answers while other answers will be more implied. The
teachers have been working hard at preparing students for the new assessment based on the Arizona
College and Career Ready Standards. Since this is a new test results are expected to widely vary. Norms
haven’t been established since the test is being written specifically for Arizona. Your child’s teacher has
the most accurate information about your child’s academic progress so please don’t hesitate to contact
them with any questions.

A Note from the Nurse’s Office
Spring has sprung. The weather is warm and everything is blooming. We can enjoy playing in
the park and beautiful flowers. As the weather gets warmer, shorts gets shorter. Be sure to go
through your child’s clothes to be sure they still fit. Shorts that are too short will need to be changed.
Tops need to have at least a 2” strap. Spaghetti straps and racer back shirts that expose too much skin
are not allowed.
Spring also brings allergies. Allergies by themselves may make anyone feel miserable but
they are not contagious. Most of the time students can be in school. On some days it may be difficult
to decide whether your child should stay home or go to school. If you feel your child is sick enough to
make a doctor’s appointment, please keep them home until after the appointment especially if you
suspect something contagious like strep. Here is a review of district policies and some tips to help you
decide.
Gilbert Public Schools has a policy that children need to stay home for fevers over 101 and be
fever free for 24 hrs without medication before coming back to school. A student should stay home
for a lower temperature if they are acting or looking sick. The 24 hr policy also applies when a
student is throwing up or having diarrhea. Symptoms need to be gone for 24 hrs before returning to
school. Runny noses and coughs are tricky. There is no specific policy for runny noses unless there is
a fever present. Teach your child to use a Kleenex to blow their nose and to cough into their sleeve.
Also teach them to wash their hands after coughing or sneezing. Student should not attend school if
their cough is disruptive or constant. You may send in 1-2 cough drops with your child for their use
only. If they are sharing, the cough drops may be taken. You may drop some cough drops off in the
health office for your child as well. Cough drops are the only medication that a child is allowed to
have without being dropped off in the Health Office. Encourage your children to drink plenty of
fluids and get rest. This will help all get through the allergy season.
As a reminder for those who have students who use an inhaler for Asthma, students are not
allowed to carry their inhaler unless it is checked in with the health office and the proper paperwork is
completed. Even if a student carries their inhaler, a back up one should be kept in the health office
for those times when your child forgets to bring their inhaler. All inhalers need to be clearly marked
with a prescription label at all times.
Attention: 5th grade parents. In preparation for next school year, there are immunization
requirements for 6th grade. If your child is 11 and in 6th grade the Tdap (Tetanus, Diptheria and
Pertussis) booster and the Meningococcal vaccine are required. You should consider getting the
required shots now and sending in a copy of the verified record to the health office especially if you
child is already 11 years old. These shots are needed by the first day of school next year.

FITNESS AT HOME
It is recommended that kids receive 60 minutes of activity daily, most of which should be aerobic. Look for a new
exciting activity every month in the Boulder Creek News Letter.
SOCCER
This highly active game involving both agility and teamwork has grown increasingly popular in the U.S. in recent
years. To keep kids injury free, be sure they are geared up in appropriate protective equipment, such as shin
guards. Soccer players should also wear shoes with cleats or ribbed soles to prevent slipping.

Student Learning Environment Forms
As we look forward to student placement for this next school year, I wanted to take a few minutes to explain the
process in hopes that you will understand all the work and thought that goes into it. We take the placement of
students very seriously and spend a great deal time arranging students in the classrooms. Our goal is to ensure the
BEST learning environment for each child. We are able to achieve that goal due to the wonderful staff we have here
at Boulder Creek.
Each of your child’s teachers will meet as a grade level team and place the students into the next grade level taking
the following factors into consideration:
• The child’s demonstrated achievement level
• The citizenship of students
• Group dynamics
• Special programs
• Boy-girl ratio in the class/equitable class size
Our teachers place students in classrooms for a number of reasons. They have worked with your child for many
months and know your child’s strengths and weaknesses. They are qualified to evaluate the most successful learning
environment for your child. Your input is always welcome but optional.
This year’s input form will be for the purpose of giving any additional information you may feel the placement team
needs to be made aware of, i.e. special needs, learning style, etc. This form is not used to request a specific
teacher. Specific names may be considered if there is a family tradition (siblings). Please note it on the form, and
understand we will do our best to consider your request, but no promises can be made.
Thank you for understanding this very important process. Forms will be available in the front office April 1st
through April 10th. We will also put the form online on the Boulder Creek website for your availability.
Remember these forms are optional. Thank you for entrusting your child’s teacher to recommend the perfect
placement for next year.

due back on Friday, April 24th. If parents wish to recommend their child for testing, they can get forms from
