Millies experience in the Gambia

The Gambia 2015
On Friday the 3 rd April, we travelled by scheduled
flight from Gatwick to Banjul airport. From there we
were met by a mini bus and a Jeep which took us to
our accommodation, Gunjur project lodge. My first
impressions of the Gambia was the poverty, litter and
very little transport on the roads however as we drove
past villages peoples waved and seemed to be very
happy despite their living conditions as compared to
the scenery in the UK.
On arrival at the Gunjur project we
were welcomed by singing and dancing
from all of the staff and the owners,
we were then shown to our bedrooms
which were all very clean and basic
with a rain water shower and a
compost toilet.
Throughout the week all the meals we had were lovely and I enjoyed all them, they were
all cooked fresh to order. I had different meals like sweet and sour chicken, Gambian
dishes and beans, pineapple frita and pancakes, each day we ran different sessions and
the local school, community centre just for the women and sessions at the scout and guide
camp. We also visited the local nature park, the fishing village and the craft market. At
lunch we had a long break so we were all able to relax around the pool but most of us had
to revise!
At night different people came into the lodge and read out their poetry and did drama
sketches, also groups and dancers, singers and drummers came in to perform. We all got
involved and danced a lot!
I met some amazing and inspiring people in my week in the Gambia and our time there
truly made a different to these peoples lives and I am very thankful that I was selected.
