spring, we have
recently been the recipients of
beautiful weather. It is my hope
that you are having an outstanding
spring season both personally and
professionally. As I reflect on this
fiscal year (July 1 – June 30) that
began with Connie Rogers
succeeding Valera Jessee as
Executive Director, I am filled
with gratitude for the opportunity
to have served as President of your
Association. Thank you for this
rewarding opportunity and for
your time, energy, talents, and
financial commitments to GPCA.
Writing to you from Sapelo
Island, while getting acquainted
with our 2015 Leadership
Program Class; it is evident that
our strong, 65 year old Association is positioned for the next
level of success. We have a
wonderful team of future GPCA
leaders who are engaged in our
2015 Leadership Program.
These individuals are strongly
committed to their own personal
and professional growth with the
common goal of making both
their companies and GPCA
better.
In this letter are some of my
reflections from this fiscal year.
The four categories that I have
observed as key pillars of GPCA
are relationships, service to
others, education, and technology.

someone. They view it, and then choose to either keep it or throw it
away.
HOW TO CREATE SIGNS THAT SELL
Why would they want to keep it?
Why would they choose to throw it away?
Which would you prefer they do?
BY: HAL COLEMAN
You want them to keep it of course.
The other day I was watching a baseball game and I saw all of these
commercial signs in the background. They were all attached to the
outfield fence. And I began thinking about those signs.
Well, ask yourself the same question about you other signage. Do you
want them (actually their subconscious mind) to save it…or delete it?
What I mean is…do you want them to remember your sign or forget
about it?
When I’m riding up and down the roads and highways I see signs
posted everywhere. I see signs on buildings, in front of buildings, on
windows and on the sides of vehicles.
Of course you want them to remember it. But for what? Aha….that is
the big question!
I see billboards and banners. When I’m sitting in a restaurant, I look
around and see signs.
Let’s face it folks, we live in a world of signs.
Did you know that the #1 most effective advertising media is signage?
The FACT is…you can stick a sign up in
front of someone’s face almost
anywhere and at any time and force
them to read it. In most cases, they
can’t help it. It’s just the way our brains
work.
And here’s another FACT: If the sign
doesn’t say something moving to the
person viewing it, it is probably NOT
going to move them!
Advertising agents are fond of saying, “We will get you noticed!”
My question to them is always, “Noticed for what?”
You see, it’s very important WHY someone is noticing you. I’m
confident I could put on a pink thong and run through the shopping
mall and get noticed. But for what?
A brightly colored vehicle will get
noticed.
“When I am riding up and down
the roads and highways I see
signs posted everywhere. “
Now, I want you to go back and read that last sentence five times…
and then stop and think about it.
And in order for a sign to be moving, it needs to be emotional. And in
order for it to be emotional, it needs to touch something…some issue… in someone’s life or business that they are dealing with.
A sign needs to say something. It needs to tell a story. It needs to
trigger a reaction in the mind of the viewer in order to generate a buying response. It needs to move them to action and cause them to pick
up the phone and call you and do business with you.
Example: Vote For Fred Johnson vs. "Vote for Fred Johnson and
LOWER YOUR TAXES NOW!"
Make sense? I hope so.
Now, let me ask you this: Do you use signage to promote your termite and pest control business? I’m sure you do.
But, once someone notices it, what
does it say to them?
What compelling message does it
deliver?
What irresistible offer do they find
there?
After someone notices the vehicle, what else does the vehicle do to
convert the viewer into a new paying customer?
Getting noticed is only half of the equation that leads to more new
business. The other half is the FOR WHAT?
If your signs don’t contain the FOR WHAT…in a clear, concise,
compelling, message….YOU ARE LEAVING A LOT OF EASY
MONEY ON THE TABLE…the you could be putting in the bank.
And that also is a FACT!

Relationships
It is often said that life is about relationships. In my observations, the relationships created and fostered by participation in
GPCA empower individuals to enrich their own lives as well as
the lives of others. We get to make friends, hang out with
friends, grow with friends, and call it “working.” That is pretty
cool!
Service to Others
The talents that our members have been blessed with and share
with GPCA empower us to set ourselves apart from all other
associations. Our members serve by sharing their talents in a
number of different ways, including; Red Cross, GPCA
Leadership Program, Region Director, Committees, Train the
Trainer, providing CEU’s as an approved instructor, being a
Guardian, and many other ways. The GPCA Executive Board
is blessed with the responsibility and privilege of serving as
stewards of our members’ incredible bank of talents. If you
have a talent you would like to use for GPCA, please contact
us.
Education
Regardless of our position in life, can we answer the following
question; “what are you currently doing to keep your saw
sharp?” GPCA is a forum for education far beyond just
keeping up with CEU’s. Through GPCA educational opportunities, I’ve observed members enhance their skills in technical,
business, leadership, financial, and people development skills.
GPCA’s objective is to provide you with educational opportunities to enrich your life both personally and professionally.
Technology
Technology is one of those words that when heard can trigger
a number of different emotions within individuals. I’m convinced that our time and financial investment in technology
will continue to simplify the lives of our members, our staff,
and the public.
The old phrase goes, “you get out what you put in.” How true
this is at GPCA! Standing on the sidelines while others perform is one way to live life. The other is to volunteer, find a
spot that suits your strengths, and soar. Take it from a guy who
started out his involvement in GPCA standing on the sidelines
and ended up on the field playing a few different positions.
The position I have had the honor of playing this fiscal year has
been the most rewarding professional experience of my career.
I assure you that I got way more out of this than I ever imagined possible.
Thank you to those who are on the field making our GPCA
team better. For those standing on the sidelines, raise your
hand and let someone know which position you would like to
play. Thank you again for the opportunity and thank you for
your time, energy, talents, and financial commitments to
GPCA. It has been my privilege and pleasure to serve as
President of your association.
Sincerely,
Jeff Dunn

Didn’t we? I remember when Earth Day was

Highlights
GAMES WE PLAY!
Golf will be played on Thursday morning
at the beautiful Tom Watson designed
course which was named Golf Week’s
2013 Best Courses you can play in Florida.
The course is highlighted by fast, firm and
wide rolling fairways, a variety of strategically placed bunkers and large greens.
This signature Watson course is as much
about strategy as it is about length. The
course demands a well thought out approach from every player regardless of
skill level, this course puts a
premium on a solid short game with spacious green complexes where club selection can vary from putter to lob wedge to
three –wood.
THE RESORT
The resort is extraordinary. Besides excellent restaurants on property and your own
kitchen facilities, within two blocks, there
is a Publix, McDonalds and Applebee’s.
The pools, the Water Park and Lazy River
appeal to everyone.
CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES
When you go to a place that is non-stop
fun,
the kids want to take part also.
This is definitely a kid-friendly Resort and
conference program. Additionally, the Resort provides an ongoing children’s program every day and most evenings. Contact the hotel to make your personal arrangements if you want to schedule some

here are many things that can distract a driver. One of
the most common is the use of mobile communication
devices. We all know it is dangerous, yet most of us are guilty
of occasionally reading or sending a text or email while driving.
It is human nature to want to see who just sent us a message.
Maybe it is an emergency. Maybe it is something as unimportant as “what are you doing?” It could also be the last thing
you see before you crash.
It is hard to argue with the statistics:
 Automobile accidents are the top cause for work-related
deaths, accounting for 24% of all fatal occupational injuries
(Source: CDC)
 28% of all traffic crashes – a staggering 1.6 MILLION involved distracted drivers who were using their cell phones
and texting. (Source: National Safety Council)

49% of drivers with cell phones under the age of 35 send or
read text messages while driving. (2011, Harris Poll)

60% of drivers use cell phones while driving. (2011, Harris
Poll)

Using a cell phone while driving, whether it's handheld or
hands-free, delays a driver's reactions as much as having a
blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent.
(2009, University of Utah)
The Federal Department of Transportation has authority to pass
laws regulating cell phone use for certain types of vehicles –
those driven by federal employees, commercial trucks, buses,
and vehicles transporting any quantity of a hazardous material
requiring placarding. Drivers of non-commercial vehicles, and
most light commercial vehicles, are subject to the individual
laws of each State. At present, forty-one states have banned
text messaging for drivers. Many states also ban cell phone
use. Most of the remaining States are considering new legislation in the near future.
Employers can be held vicariously liable for injuries caused by
employees. An employer can also be deemed directly negligent
for its own conduct if the employer encourages or permits employees to use cell phones while driving in the course of business.
Beyond the obvious risks of injury to your employees, other
drivers, pedestrians, and damage to your vehicles, the liability
resulting from an accident caused by a distracted driver can be
severe. There have been some very large settlements levied
against businesses recently. One of the largest, against CocaCola Refreshments USA, Inc. in Texas, was $21 million.
Distracted Driving
Your Employees, the public and your company at risk
a hands free device, which is allowed under Texas law. But
simply complying with the law is not enough. Business owners
who want to be best in class, protect their employees and their
company, will make the effort to do more. If your current Driver
Safety Policy does not include a section on Distracted Driving,
you should seriously consider updating it. And like all safety
policies, having one at the office is just the start. All employees
must be trained on the policies, and they must be enforced.
Your insurance agent can help you develop or update existing
Driver Safety Policies.
A large verdict can easily exceed the limits of insurance carried
by most business owners. Where will the funds to pay the uncovered balance come from? Even if a verdict or settlement
falls within the limits of your insurance coverage, a claim of this
nature will likely make your next renewal a little difficult. Many
insurers are requiring copies of driver safety policies from their
insureds. They want to see that you have a policy against distracted driving. They want to know it is enforced through regular training and discipline when warranted.
Distracted Driving – the risks are too great to ignore. The safety and future of your employees, and your company, are on the
line.
