Full-Time Volunteer & Outreach AmeriCorps Member
FY16 Terms of Service
Founded in 1994, Greenbrier Learning Center (GLC) provides innovative, results-driven out-of-school time programs to support
expanded learning opportunities for children from low-income, immigrant, and refugee households.
The Volunteer & Outreach AmeriCorps Member will serve a key coordinating role within GLC to mobilize volunteers and
community resources to support program activities, as follows:
The Learning Links AmeriCorps Program provides a critical link across the three main aspects of a child’s daily experience: at
school; after school and in the summer; and at home / in the community. Toward this end, GLC partners closely with and
supports both schools and parents. Specifically, full-time Corps Members provide direct services two days/week at each of the
schools where GLC’s students are enrolled, as well as implementing the daily Learning ROCKS! Program, after school and in the
summer. And, GLC’s Parent Connection program provides relevant, topic-based workshops to help parents support their
children’s education, as well as to develop their own skills and confidence.
Responsibilities:
Volunteers
 Recruit volunteers through various means, including attending volunteer fairs, posting volunteer listings, etc.;
 Cultivate partnerships with area high schools, colleges, and community organizations for volunteer recruitment;
 Train and supervise volunteers for GLC’s programs and activities, ensuring coordination with program staff;
 Collaborate with Parent Connection Program to ensure adequate volunteer coverage during Buddy Nights;
 Identify and implement methods to recruit Baby Boomers and retired adults as volunteers; and
 Plan and implement volunteer recognition activities, throughout the year and during National Volunteer Week.
Development
 Coordinate and support GLC’s major resource generation events (approximately three/year), including designing and
managing print materials, mailings, and event logistics;
 Track donations and follow-up with donors during GLC’s annual giving campaign; and
 Assist with proposal development for GLC’s programs, as necessary and appropriate.
Outreach
 Develop newsletters, reports, and other communications for community partners and volunteers; and
 Maintain GLC’s website and other social media that reach community partners and volunteers.
General
 Provide periodic direct service to GLC programs to inform outreach and coordination efforts;
 Develop reports on Volunteer and Outreach activities as required;
 Participate in required AmeriCorps and/or National Days of Service projects; and
 Comply with all applicable rules, regulations, and agreements of the organization.
Minimum Requirements:
 U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien;
 High school graduate or equivalent, at least 17 years old;
 Commitment to local, community-based organizations;
 Strong research, writing, and organizational skills;
 Excellent time management skills;
 Professional communication skills – ability to interact well with children, parents, community members/partners,
volunteers, program staff, and high-level supports including Board Members;
 Interest in and sensitivity to working with people from a variety of cultures and ethnic groups;
 Bilingual Spanish and English skills, including reading, writing, and conversation helpful;
 Self-motivated, independent, and resourceful; and
 A great sense of humor!
Time Commitment:
 Term of service: August 17, 2015 to August 12, 2016; and
 Full-time, 37.5 hours/week commitment, including some evening and weekend activities.
Benefits:
 Full-time AmeriCorps Members who successfully complete a term of service (1700 hours) are eligible to receive an
AmeriCorps Education Award of up to $5,550;
 Additional benefits include training, $1,008/month living stipend, student-loan forbearance or deferment, health care
benefits, and, depending on eligibility, childcare assistance;
 Corps Members receive time off for winter break and spring break, as well as personal days off;
 GLC is committed to strengthening Corps Members’ professional and personal development. Corps Members will
receive training in a variety of topics including: content areas, tutoring skills, child development, behavior management,
education theory, leadership skills, and team building. Additionally, Corps Members will have significant autonomy and
ownership over many aspects of programming and service; and
 Full-time Members will also have the option (first-come, first-serve basis), if they so choose and qualify, to live at a
local affordable housing development at a significantly discounted rate.
