ENOUGH WITH THIS WINTER
Here we are sitting and looking out the window while we
write this article. It is February 16th and we have three feet of snow
covering the yard and five feet lining the walkways and driveway.
It hasn’t been above freezing in Lord knows how long. In fact, it
hasn’t been out of single digit temperatures in days. We have had
enough of winter. We would like to hear the Global Warming
fanatics explain this weather. We are out walking the new puppy
early every morning and the weather hits you in the face the moment you step out the door. A little
advice, never get a puppy in January unless you live below the Mason-Dixon Line. It is hard to
imaging riding a motorcycle when you are looking at all this snow outside your window. We know
it will go fast once it starts to melt but we don’t know if the temperature will ever get above
freezing again. We can’t believe we slept through the January thaw. That is usually a wonderful
time of the year when you feel the sun and warmth on your cheeks. It was eight below this morning
with a minus twenty-five wind chill. Our van wouldn’t start. You gotta love this North Country. We
are just so sorry that all the Snowbirds are missing this great time of year.

Anyway, welcome to March. What is there not to like about March. It usually means that it
is the end of winter, when everything gets real wet and muddy. We get to dress up
on the 17th in our green attire and go out to celebrate with a bunch of drunks. How
could you not like March? The way things are looking around here, we won’t be
riding our bikes to any St. Patrick’s Day celebration. We’re shooting for Memorial
Day. The snow should be gone by then. March is a great time of the year to get
that last minute training in so we are sure we’re ready to ride. If you happen to
miss the training in March, the Western NY Training Day is scheduled for April 4 th
in Batavia. The registration form is attached to this newsletter. Remember that we
mentioned last month that this is a good time to get our bodies in shape too.
We are three months away from our Ride-In. Chapter U has been working hard to make sure
that we have a fun filled weekend. If you have never ridden in the southwest part of New York, you
are in for a treat. We have been there twice by car and it looks like the kind of area that is begging
to be ridden on a motorcycle. We will have a great time in Jamestown. The flyer and registration
form are attached to this newsletter for your convenience. Please register as soon as possible. There
is nothing worse than hosting an event and wondering how many attendees you will have. It is
never much fun trying to guess how many members are coming. Let’s show Chapter U our support
and enthusiasm by getting our registrations in early.
You all must be wondering how Samantha (Sam) is
doing. She is growing like a weed. She has figured out what
the outside is for and has been doing well in the house
training department. Here she is playing with her
motorcycles and wearing her patch. We will start looking
for a helmet for her in a month or so. She and Mom are
getting along very well. I actually saw Katy pet her the
other day and smile at her. Of course, Sam returned the
good gesture by biting her hand and then barking at her
when she withdrew her hand. I don’t see a Mother-Daughter weekend camping trip in the near
future.
The flyer and registration form are out for the 2015 NY/NJ Bi-State Convention. They are
attached to this newsletter so you can get your registration in early. We want to make this the
largest convention ever and we need your help to do this. The theme this year is
“Alien Invasion” and there will be a costume contest on Friday night. The
convention is at the Holiday Inn in Liverpool, NY, and we need you to stay there.
Both districts get credit for every room that is booked at the hotel and for four
dinners that will be offered Wednesday through Saturday. We lose money when
you stay at another hotel. Please support your district by booking a room at the
Holiday Inn. The rooms are $99.00 which includes a breakfast buffet. The cutoff

date for the rooms is July 13th. After that date, the rooms will be $179.00 and will not include
breakfast so get your room reservations as soon as possible. We look forward to seeing you there
and we promise a fun filled weekend.
We want to thank everyone in our District and the other Region B Districts for all of the
cards, the kind words and the flowers we received when my Mother passed away. We appreciated
all of your sympathy gestures. Our mailman is off on sick leave after suffering a hernia delivering
all of them. Thank you very much.
Don’t believe any of that stuff you hear about March
coming in like a lion. We feel that we have been punished
enough this winter and God is going to have mercy on us.
Get your bikes and trikes ready to rumble. We will be
riding by the end of the month. We promise you that.

Western New York Training Day and Its Purpose
Well folks, it’s almost here. It is just about time for the Western New
York (WNY) Training Day. This year it will be held on Saturday April 4 th
in Batavia, New York. As in the past few years it will be at the Batavia
First United Methodist Church located at 8221 Lewiston Road in
Batavia. The festivities will start at 8:30 am with pastries and coffee
(which I affectionately call “Lickies and Chewies”). Classes will begin
at 9:00 am and run until 4:00 pm. There will be seminars offered in the
following programs:
1. Rider Education
2. Leadership Training
3. Membership Enhancement
Along with that there will be a:
1. Medic First Air / CPR seminar
2. University Training Development Program (UTDP) to train you to be a seminar presenter if you so
desire.

Some people have asked me why we do this every year and why is it so successful. Well the answer is
simple, because you folks, the members make it successful. All we do at the District level is organize
the event. It is the members that participate and have a great time.
This great event is always held early in the spring as a great start to the riding season. We have all been
pretty much dormant over the winter when it comes to motorcycling. This is a great way to get the juices
flowing again without getting on the bikes just yet. In the Army we referred to this method of training as
the Crawl, Walk, Run method of training.
We start out small (crawling) with this event to get your feet back under you before taking on riskier
events. You might then do a Parking Lot Practice (PLP) or some other Membership Enhancement or
Leadership Training seminars later in the spring. This would be the walk phase, you pick up the pace a
little. Then, once you are well back into the swing of things you might be in a full bore run phase with
taking a few seminars at the NY/NJ Bi-State Convention along with an Advanced Rider Course (ARC) or
other riding course.
Start out slow making sure that you ease yourself, both physically and mentally, back into the riding
season. The WNY Training Day is a great way to do that.
You can get more information about this event by looking at the flyers in this month’s edition of this
newsletter. Your chapter newsletter should also have the event flyer and the registration form in it this
month. Print them out, fill them out, and get them back to me to get registered and get a great jump on
this riding season.
If you have any questions about the event don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or
(716) 560-6571. I’m looking forward to seeing a ton of you there!

Eastern NY Assistant District Director Message
America the Beautiful…Part 6
By Gary & Donna Cork, Assistant District Directors, Eastern New York
Well, there are only three more months until we can start to nudge our motorcycles and trikes into a
state of readiness. I've already obtained quotes from three places to get various things done on my
motorcycle to prepare it for the long journey ahead of me this summer.
My plan is to do the following, partly because I'm going on a long trip, but also because the bike is 16
years old, with 119,110 miles on it.








Replace the front and rear tires
Flush brake hydraulic system
Replace all brake pads
Flush the coolant system
Replace the alternator brushes
Check the balance between the twin carburetors
Replace front and rear wheel bearings
Change final drive fluid
GWRRA NY District
 Check air filter
 Check steering neck bearings
 Check suspension
I also will check and grease the wheel bearings on my trailer. I am having a custom-crafted seat cover
made to protect my velour-like seat from the rain (it has a habit of absorbing lots of water when it rains),
which I imagine just might affect a few days of my journey. (I also have my normal bike cover, for nighttime parking.) So I'm saving up my money to cover all these costs.
As we left off last month, we were about to head into Arizona, "The Grand Canyon State". I worked on
the South Rim of the Grand Canyon when I was in high school, and I have to say, it is truly one of the
most beautiful places I have ever seen on this earth. But since I spent an entire summer on the South
Rim, I will not plan to visit it on this trip. So most of my time will be spent in southern, central and
western Arizona.
Arizona was the last of the 48 contiguous states to join our union, in 1912. Most of the growth in its
population occurred since World War II. Did you know that London Bridge, which once spanned the
River Thames in London, England, was purchased for $2,460,000 by Lake Havasu City founder and
entrepreneur, Robert P. McCulloch, in 1968? Each block was numbered before disassembly, then they
were shipped to Arizona, where they were reassembled, and the new bridge was dedicated in 1971. To
this day, it is one of the most popular sights for tourists in Arizona, second only to the Grand Canyon.
Upon entering Arizona, I'll take a side trip to Tombstone, and visit the famous OK Corral. There was a
well-known gunfight in Tombstone. They called it the "Gunfight at the OK Corral". But did you know, only
22 shots were fired in that gunfight, and it only lasted 30 seconds? By the way, the good guys won
(Wyatt Earp, brothers Virgil and Morgan Earp and "Doc" Holiday).
Having lived in Arizona for a few years, I know that one of their specialties is Native American jewelry,
specifically, beautiful turquoise and silver jewelry and accessories. Maybe I'll spot a really nice piece to
bring home for you-know-who.
My second destination in Arizona will be Tucson, visiting my brother-in-law, Bob and his new wife,
Shary. (My sister passed away several years ago; Bob was the best brother-in-law one could ask for,
and he will always be special to me.) While in Tucson, I may visit the Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter; they have
a 5-hour SkyNights program, where you can see the universe in a way most people never will. And the
Pima Air & Space Museum should be a fascinating place to absorb aerospace history.
After Tucson, I'll continue my journey north, to Phoenix. Not a far drive, at all. (It is said that within
thirty years, Phoenix and Tucson could very well merge.) I have a special aunt and a number of cousins
to visit in Phoenix. Since I left Phoenix in 1968 when I joined the Navy, I have only had the pleasure of
visiting with them a couple of times, so I'll enjoy catching up on things. While in Phoenix, I'll visit my old
high school, my junior college, and a couple high school and college friends who still live there. Oh, and
I shouldn't neglect to visit our friend, Ray Garris, in the Phoenix GWRRA headquarters.
Then I'm on my way, heading toward Reno. I'll shuffle off to the west from Phoenix on I-10, until I turn
north near the California border, onto SR-95, which will take me to Lake Havasu City, for lunch and a few
pictures of London Bridge. Then onward, to Las Vegas, Nevada!
Nevada - the Silver State - it gets its name from the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. I simply couldn't
bear to pass through LV without stopping to get a personal look-see at the famous Pawn Stars pawn
shop seen on cable TV! I was recently told that at any given time, there is a very long line to get into the
pawn shop. So it depends on how fast the line is moving. Since casinos are a major part of this city, I
must spend at least a little time roaming around the one-armed bandits. But I already have been
calibrated - I know how to limit my losses… A few years ago, our younger daughter worked at the
Aladdin Hotel, which was converted to Planet Hollywood. (Elvis was married at the Aladdin.) She also
worked at Treasure Island as a Poker Room Manager. And I might just visit the Ethel M Chocolates
Company for a delicious, er, I mean, quick tour. I'm likely to visit Lake Mead and Hoover Dam. (WOW! Back to Top
Page 5 of 16
GWRRA NY District
726 feet high!) And I'll try to get a tour of the power plant while there.
Nevada is still the country's top gold producer. Hard to believe, but more than one thousand atomic
bomb tests were conducted in Nevada by the US Army.
Here's where the ride gets even more interesting. Heading northwest from Las Vegas on US-95, I'll
turn southwest in Beatty, NV, to head into California's Death Valley National Park… just to say I did. I'll
make my way northward after a fashion, and get to US 395, which should take me all the way to Reno.
I'll need to drink lots of water on that leg of the journey. Then comes Reno Rendezvous. Hooray!!!
While there, I will visit Carson City, maybe take a ride around Lake Tahoe, the country's largest lake,
shared between Nevada and California, and I'll visit Virginia City, an old gold and silver mining town, and
a Reno casino or two. And I'll be sure to share my experience with you afterwards. Incidentally, it
occurred to me that from my entry into Texas to this point, I will likely have little trouble with rain… this is
the most arid part of the United States. (I'm sure the Northwest might make up for that…)
Well, folks, I'll wrap it up here, so the next article can start as I head back into California, to visit
Yosemite National Park. I am, indeed, looking forward to that segment of the trip.
So I part with you with the following tidbit of information:
The U.S. enjoys an average of 48 pints of ice cream per person, per year, more than any other country.
All I can say is, a lot of people must be doing without completely, if you consider how much us Gold
Wingers eat each year!
By the way, did you guess who was inaugurated in 1812? It was James Madison, one of the primary
creators of the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights. He was the oldest of twelve children.
He was one of only two signers of the Constitution who would later become President. The other one
was George Washington.
Chapter of the Year Coordinators
CHOY,
We explain the Process
Last month, Marielle and I stepped up as your NY District Chapter of the Year Coordinators, (CHOY).
First and foremost, we would like to recognize all of our NY Chapters who enter the program. We
received participation from NY Chapters W, N, L, X, and K. After reviewing the necessary 2014 CHOY
Guide, it became clear that great book keeping becomes a great asset. A few have waited until the end
of the Year to complete the paperwork submission but quickly realize that staying up to date with the
paperwork’s on a monthly basic makes this task whole lot easier. At least for this month let’s review a few
objectives and go over the CHOY history.
Scoring Objective - One of the most frequent questions asked of this program is why a certain amount
of points are awarded for one scored area and a different amount of points to other areas. The Chapter
of the Year Program is divided into four major areas. They are General Chapter, Membership
Enhancement, Rider Education and Leadership Training. One of the internal goals of developing and
updating the score sheet each year is to ensure that the points for the General Chapter area accounts for
a large portion of the score and that the other three major areas remain fairly equal. By doing this,
Back to Top
GWRRA NY District
Chapters that are stronger in Rider Education do not have an unfair advantage over Chapters that might
not be so strong in Rider Education. The same example can be used for Chapters that are stronger in
Membership Enhancement or Leadership Training. Scoring in this manner helps meet the program’s goal
by ensuring that small as well as large Chapters have an equal opportunity to win and be recognized as
the best Chapter in all of GWRRA.
GWRRA Chapter of the Year History
The Chapter of the Year Program was created and designed in 2007 to stimulate Chapters to strive for
excellence within their respective District and Region. Secondly it is to find and recognize the best of the
best Chapters within GWRRA.
GWRRA Chapter of the Year Goal
The goal of the Chapter of the Year Program is to get more Chapters involved in all of the GWRRA’s
programs and FUN activities that have been proven successful for many of the active and growing
Chapters throughout GWRRA. Chapters that enter into the Chapter of the Year Program and are not
selected as the District, Region or GWRRA International Chapter of the Year, will be a stronger, healthier
Chapter for their efforts. Many of the scoring areas are measured in percentages to ensure that small
and large Chapters alike have an equal chance in winning.

The 3 P's B 4 U Ride
The start of the riding season, brings with it preparation that we shouldn't over look. What better way
than taking a page out of GWRRA's Riding Course know as the 3-P's, (Proper You, Proper Gear and
Proper Equipment). For the beginning of the season we can think of it as prepare. Prepare yourself, your
gear and your equipment.

Prepare Yourself – Are you ready for the riding season to begin? Has anything changed to
warrant updating your or your co-rider's health history form? Is it still legible? If you take any
medications are they listed? Is it still stored in the left front compartment? Do we need to fine
tune ourselves a little? Light to moderate stretching prior to riding, will help warm up those
muscles. Having trouble getting started this year? Worried about that first ride. It may be time to
Back to Top
GWRRA NY District
think about upgrading that bike to a trike. It doesn’t hurt to stop by your local trike dealer and
check them out. I was certainly surprised on my first ride on one.

Prepare your Gear – Now is a good time to look over your gear. What condition is it in? Are any
of the seams or stitching frayed? Was it washed when you put it away, and need a water repellent
reapplied for those light misty rains we sometimes ride in. The same goes with your riding boots.
Some riding garments have a tendency to shrink when not worn for an extended period of time,
and waiting for the first ride of the season to try them on will add frustration in your life.

Prepare your Equipment – Pull out your T-CLOC form and do a thorough check. Should you
need help with some of the basic maintenance, check out and see if your Chapter is having a Tec
Day. If you need help with something, make arrangements with other Chapter Members to help
you out at Tec Day.
Each new riding season we each become a little more seasoned. Lets not become complacent by
overlooking the little details when we prepare for this riding season.
District Membership Enhancement
What’s New This New Year?
As the New Year came around, our NY District Directors
(DD) Steve and Katy asked us if we could step up to this position as we did for so many years in the
past. It would represent new challenges. Of course after a brief conversation at the Maryland Winter
Things, we just had to accept this great opportunity to help our District in that regard.
A Few days later we drove to Syracuse for the District meeting where I had a chance to address all the
meeting attendees. I focused my allocated time to make certain all Directors and Chapter Membership
Enhancement Coordinators (MEC) were to follow the same protocol when it comes time to review the
Monthly update Area Report List (ARL). This precious information will save lots of questions and valuable
time in the future as it will set us all on the same page when it comes time to give us feedback on New or
Prospective Members appearing on the ARL.
New Chapter MEC
At the chapter level several new Chapter MECs accepted positions to help their respective chapter. NY
Chapter U has William and Yvonne Spoon who just joined the group in February; Chapter K also had
Richard Bullis who volunteered his time to help and wouldn’t you know a relatively new Member from
Chapter X Michael Devaux accepted their MEC position. On behalf of the District we want to thank
them for their services. Here is a link describing this position http://mep.gwrra.org/mec/MEC

Chapter of the Year, Not to be confused with Couple of the year, we have also accepted to fill this
position as your District Coordinators for this year. Here is some documentation on this great program

Rich and I would like to take this opportunity to
introduce ourselves as the newly appointed District
Couple of the Year Coordinators.
We have been with GWRRA for merely two years and
must say that we knew right away that we wanted to be a
part of this great association. Having met so many
wonderful people and serving our Chapter has continued
to motivate and inspire us to be more active members of
GWRRA.
Rich and I live on Long Island (the bridge crossing
capital of New York) in Deer Park. We have been married for 34 years and have been riding together
since we were high school sweethearts. We have three children and one quite adorable granddaughter.
We also have three very cute beagles. We are both teachers or should I say Rich will only be an active
teacher for 4 more months as he transitions into that world called “retirement”.
Rich has always been more passionate about riding until we took our first long distance ride to
Nashville last year. You never have to try to convince me again to get on the bike and go.
We love being a part of NY Chapter K. Linda and Bill Reichling have been amazing role models as
Chapter Directors and truly trusted in us to become Assistant Chapter Directors. We are certainly
looking forward to moving into the Chapter Director’s position when it is time.
Rich and I found out about the Coordinator’s position during the district meeting in Liverpool.
Everyone has been so supportive and quite helpful. What we enjoy the most is getting to meet really
amazing members outside of our Chapter and sharing our passion for riding and for being a part of the
GWRRA family.
We would like to send a very warm congratulations to all of the Chapter Couples and hope that we will
see you at Bi-State to continue in the selection process. It is surely an honor that has been bestowed
upon you. You have been chosen by your Chapter because you are a role model for other members.

You are ambassadors for your Chapter and GWRRA. Sounds kind of goofy but think about it. You are a
very important member of your Chapter-you represent and promote fun, safety, and knowledge. You
help coordinate, volunteer, and get the message out about GWRRA! You lead by example, have many
amazing stories to share, and continue to develop lasting relationships.
We would encourage all Couples to share and represent your Chapter at Bi-State in the selection
process for District Couple of the Year.

From the Region Trainers
Happy Group
Tim and I presented an OCP on January 24-25, 2015 after the District meeting in Syracuse, NY with the
assistance of Shawn Hayes, District Trainer (who is certifying to become a Certified Officer Trainer) and
we had a couple of firsts. Richie Bullis (NY-K), Raymond Wood (NY-H), Roger and Arlene Connelly (NYU) and Lyle Nudd (NY-W) are pictured above and Richie is the youngest (twenty something) and
Raymond is the oldest (84) who have taken the OCP from us. Imagine, the oldest and the youngest in
the same course and we had fun and a great exchange of ideas.
GWRRA as a whole is dwindling. We are losing members. The question I have to ask myself is if we are
losing members why are we adding more levels or layers to the top of the organization? We now have
Back to Top
GWRRA NY District
more Assistant International Directors and also Deputy Directors than we have had in previous years
with less members. In my mind I would think we should be concentrating on how to attract new
members and not adding more layers. Also, in the Officers Certification Program (OCP) we present that
the correct way to look at our organization is the inverted triangle where the true purpose of GWRRA is
the bottom layer or the Chapters, the members. AND they are number ONE! Have we as an
organization forgotten this and our Motto (Friends for FUN, Safety and Knowledge)? We are beginning
to look like the regular triangle, becoming more like a company where the top starts issuing orders rather
than providing support as it was envisioned back in 1977 when GWRRA started.
The OCP is a great program but should be renamed so we get more people to take it instead of just
officers. Maybe GWRRA Member Information/Orientation Program or something else because that is
truly what it is – information for all members. Shouldn’t we all know the rules and regulations of the
organization we joined? I have been a member for so long that I remember a “secret book” we passed
around with the rules and regulations and we weren’t allowed to copy it! We need to harness the energy
and enthusiasm of the younger generations to get more membership and more leadership. We need to
roll out the OCP that includes ALL membership and have FUN while doing it? We have target training
for Chapter Directors, Chapter Educators (Rider Ed), Membership Enhancement and Chapter
Treasurers. What about a seminar for our new members? We might get more participation from our
members if they knew what was available and what GWRRA was about.
The work ethic of Baby Boomers is work first and that of Generation X and the Millennia’s or Generation
Y is lifestyle first. How do we attract younger people who will be the growth of the organization?
Generation X feels there is no need to lead and Millennia’s will lead only if necessary? The youngest
person in the class was full of energy and had many ideas to possibly attract more people through
Motorist Awareness. Is that the answer? It certainly is a worthwhile possibility and I challenge every
chapter to do more through Motorist Awareness. Maybe, just maybe, if we do get younger people
involved we can convince them to get involved and take positions of responsibility. Their input and ideas
can only help but they need to know what we believe in.
Baby Boomers want others to work with them while Generation X prefer to work alone and Millennia’s
like to work in small groups. So how do we attract and keep people that are Generation X and
Millennia’s and let them take over when in fact they are our future. We could have them head up small
groups and bring the results to the membership knowing they like to work in small groups. We need to
attract the younger people and then all work together for the common good of the organization and still
have FUN. We need them for growth and our future. In other words, we need to revamp our thinking
and LISTEN to younger people and not think WE as the baby boomers know everything.

Get a good night’s sleep
We had a chapter get-together a few weeks ago and it was mentioned that a member was being treated for
sleep apnea. I was amazed how many people I know, both in the organization and outside of it, have been
diagnosed with sleep apnea and are undergoing treatment for it.
Basically sleep apnea is a condition where a person’s breathing is repeatedly interrupted during sleep. In
severe cases hundreds of these interruptions may occur during every night! These interruptions cause the
brain and the rest of the body to be deprived of oxygen. This is a serious problem and can lead to serious
conditions such as: high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, depression, headaches, or heart problems
including heart failure, irregular heart beat, or even heart attack!
The most common form of sleep apnea is called “obstructive sleep apnea” and is caused by a blockage of the
airway when soft tissue in the back of the throat blocks the airway during sleep.
Symptoms of sleep apnea can include:







Repeatedly waking up with a very sore or dry throat
Occasionally waking up with a choking or gasping sensation
Loud snoring
Sleepiness or low energy during the day
Forgetfulness, mood changes, or low libido
Recurring awakening or insomnia
Cessation of breathing followed by gasping during sleep
Sleep apnea can occur in anybody, including children, but those most at risk include:






Being male
Being overweight
Being over 40 years old

If you think you might have sleep apnea, your physician will likely have you undergo a sleep study in either a
sleep center, a hospital, or even in your own home. A sleep study is usually done in a very comfortable
bedroom like setting while trained professionals monitor you in an adjoining room. Electrodes are attached to
your face and scalp to monitor brain and muscle activity. Belts are placed around your chest and abdomen in
order to monitor breathing and an oximeter probe is placed on a finger to monitor blood oxygen levels. An
ECG monitors your heart. A microphone monitors snoring while a low-light camera observes you while you
sleep. If a diagnoses of sleep apnea is confirmed a second study is usually scheduled so that the best
treatment option can be determined.
The most common treatment for sleep apnea is called “CPAP”. CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway
Pressure. A fairly small machine delivers a continuous flow of air through a mask that covers the nose and/or
the mouth. The air is often humidified in order to relieve dry throat. This flow of air promotes regular
breathing and a good night’s sleep. Patients often remark that they haven’t slept so well in years while
undergoing CPAP treatment. Another alternative treatment is referred to as BPAP or Bilevel Positive Airway
Pressure. With BPAP the airflow changes when breathing in and out. Extremely severe cases of sleep
apnea can involve one of several surgical options.
Sleep apnea is serious and can lead to life-threatening conditions. Fortunately, while it cannot be cured, it is
easily treated with outstanding results. If you think that you or a family member might have sleep apnea
please contact your health care professional. You can and will have a good night’s sleep and wake up feeling
refreshed.
