College ~ Term 1 Recipients of Full Colours
MESSAGE FROM THE MARKETING OFFICE
It is hard to believe that this is the last edition of the Heron for term 1. This edition
features the recent College Colours and Awards assembly, special activities involving both
Pre-Preparatory and Preparatory pupils, debating news and some mountain biking highlights. Importantly this edition also highlights the 2014 Preparatory School Valediction
Service award winners, for some reason this important milestone for Grade 7 pupils has
never been featured in the earlier editions of the Heron this year.
Siblings are always prioritised in terms of Admissions, however this can only happen if the
siblings of current pupils are registered. Parents who wish to register a sibling of current
pupils are urged to read the Admissions notice on page 9.
While most of the pupils will be enjoying the holidays, some Grade 11 pupils will be travelling to the Waterberg on a Mission Trip and the College sports teams will also be involved
in tours and training camps. We are certain that our pupils will continue to fly the HBC
flag very high.
Term 2 will commence on Tuesday, 5 May and parents are reminded that pupils need to
be in winter uniform at the start of the second term. We wish all our families a restful
holiday and safe travels to families who will be travelling.
Happy Reading!
God loves you with an everlasting love. Receive His gift of eternal life.

GRADE 00 ~ SPECIAL PERSONS DAY!
The Grade 00 children spent a wonderful morning at school with their ‘special people’. They enjoyed creating a beautiful picture together, they sang some songs and enjoyed some delicious treats. Thank you to all our special people for joining us for the morning.
GRADE 2 EASTER HUNT
The Grade 2s had great fun working in teams to make Easter baskets, which they folded all by themselves! Once their baskets had been
decorated, they hunted for eggs in the garden!

GRADE 6 … CELEBRATE THE CLASSROOM
On 8 April the Grade 6 pupils invited their parents to join them at school for the evening. The children enjoyed sharing some of what
they experience each day at school with their moms and dads. Thank you to all the parents for participating so enthusiastically, it was a
special and memorable time for your children.

DEBATING
First Term Debating Results
Juniors
HeronBridge juniors have completed their regional league for the
year and have certainly done HeronBridge proud. The “Beige” team
ranked forth out of 26 teams, while the “Blue” team came in sixth.
Both these teams will now progress to the SACEE Championships
in May.
National Trials
At the end of last year Grant Fourie was
selected as a South African trialist. Since
then he has undergone two grueling rounds
of trials: 18 debates over five and a half
Special congratulations to Matthias Venayagamoorthy and David days. Although he narrowly missed the

ings and both were awarded three Best Speaker awards. This is no represent the SA “A” team, which will
participate in Romania in September. We
mean feat in a field of 160 debaters.
are very proud of the way Grant acquitted himself and wish him
every success in the up coming tournament.
Bratislava Tour
Seniors
The two senior teams are half way through their league. The A
team has 3/3 wins while the B team has 1/3 wins. Congratulations
to Grant Fourie for receiving 3 Best Speaker Awards, Sarah Hammond who received two and Kelly Green and Reagan Boden who
each received one.
At the end of March, Zoey Sneedon joined
a team of junior Gauteng debaters in
attending an international debating tournament in Bratislava, Slovakia. They were the
youngest team in the tournament and were
debating against a number of national
teams. Although the team did not break
through to the knockout rounds, they put
up an admirable performance wining three of their six debates
unanimously, and
losing three on a split decision (2:1
judges). Feedback from the tournament is that Zoey was speaking
extremely well and did much to contribute to the team’s success.
Well done to Zoey, we are very proud of her indeed.

INTER-HOUSE QUIZ
HeronBridge College is well known for our academic achievements and our Matric results always speak to the intelligence of our children.
But at this year’s Inter-House Quiz we not only measured the general knowledge of the children, but also of the staff and parents!
All four houses entered the competition as well as two staff teams and two parent teams. The amazing Queen of all Queens – Mistress of
the Quiz – Miss Jelley hosted the evening and ensured that fun was had by all – and that the evening stayed google free!
The quiz put contestants through their paces in categories such as Sport, Nerd Alert, Logos, Music, Geography and South African Arts and
Culture. And with the new Brain of Brains section that went all the way to sudden death individuals had the chance to prove their brains.
The Brain of Brains was tightly contested, with Tyler
McKee taking home the trophy at the end of the evening. The junior winners of the evening were Turaco
whilst the senior winners of the evening were Barbet.
And amazingly when the tallies were totalled – it was a
tie between Turaco and Barbet.
Thank you to all the children and parents who contributed to the evening’s fun. We look forward to the next
battle!

URGENT NOTE FROM THE ADMISSIONS DEPARTMENT
Sibling alert!
Have you registered your younger/older siblings? Whilst we do prioritise sibling
enrolments, we can only do this if they are registered timeously.
Please note that we have three major intake years – Grade 000, 00 and Grade 8.
Importantly, please note that Grade R and Grade 1 are not common intake years therefore it is difficult to accommodate pupils(including siblings) in these grades . All other
Grades feed through from the previous year, and places only become available if an existing child leaves.
A PROMISE TO MY CHILD
By Nikki Bush
I promise to feed you, clothe you and put a roof over your
head,
Although, this may vary in quality and quantity from timeto-time.
I promise to teach you to be resilient and resourceful,
So that you can succeed and thrive no matter what life
may throw at you.
I can't promise you that you won't get hurt by life,
And that horrible things will never happen.
But, I do promise you that as long as I am alive,
I will love you and be there for you.
I promise to shower you with unconditional love and encouragement,
And to hold the space for you to become, well, YOU!
I promise to help you to discover your unique talents and
gifts.
And I look forward to hearing the verse you will create
and one day sing.
I promise you that you will have good and bad moments,
But life may surprise you.
I promise that as you grow and gain perspective, what
might initially seem negative,
May well be the best gift of all to help you to a better life.
I promise to keep growing and working on myself.
It's not your job to make me happy, it's mine.
You have helped me to discover more about me,
About parts of myself I have never seen or met before.
You create an invitation for me to dance with life,
And when you ask me to dance,
My answer is a resounding “Yes!”, and, “Thank you!”
For the personal adventures you bring to me every, single
day.
I promise you a place at my table, always,
Regardless of your choices.
When you were born, you were a precious gift from Life,
But you are also a gift to Life.
As your parent,
I promise to honour you and protect you,
And when the time is right, to let you go,
So that you can take flight and make a dent in the Universe.
You will forever be in my heart,
One that is so enriched by your being in the world.
I love you my precious child.
May you be inspired and encouraged on your parenting
journey.
