WOVEN Dazzles Hundreds At Their 5th Annual Purse Auction

The

Eucalyptus
Schoolhouse was the backdrop
for the 5th Annual WOVEN
Purse Auction Gala held last
Friday evening, April 10, 2015.
Approximately 250 women
gathered together for the purpose of supporting the Women
of
Virtue
Empowerment
Network through this annual
purse auction fundraiser.
The evening started with a
welcome and prayer by
Director Stacie Chandler.
Guests were provided a delicious dinner catered by the Old
Eucalyptus House . During the
dinner those in attendance were
able to hear testimonies from a
couple of ladies who utilize the
WOVEN Centers.
Director Betty Predmore
gave a recap of WOVEN's year
and discussed the areas of need
and ways that women can get
involved.
Thirty-two beautiful purses
were up for bid in the live auction. Descriptions were read by
Master of Ceremonies, Alexis
Brown.
Auctioneer for the evening
was "Woody" Finley and spotter was Tony Ojeda. There was
much laughter throughout the
bidding process, and some
happy women walked away
with some beautiful purses.
In addition to the live auction, a silent auction was set up
for the ladies to enjoy, which
included purses and many other
beautiful treasures. There was
also a purse raffle, which provided yet another opportunity
to go home with a beautiful
purse. The ladies also had a
great time taking group pictures
in the photo booth.
Proceeds of this fundraising
gala will go towards the operating costs of the El Centro
WOVEN Center and the
Brawley WOVEN Center.

4th Street Construction Nears
Completion In Holtville
THE CONSTRUCTION ON 4th Street is winding up as they have started to lay down new pavement.
When completed, this project will have added curb and sidewalk along 4th Street from Cedar to
Maple Avenue along with widening 4th Street.
Holtville City Council
Awards Contract For
Grant Administration

The Holtville City Council
awarded a contract for Grant
Administration Services to
California Consulting, LLC. in
regards to the Sustainable
Communities Planning Grant
that Holtville was awarded.
The
Sustainable
Communities Planning Grant
and Incentives Program Grant
will be used by the City to update
their General Plan. The Grant is
funded by Proposition 84, the
Safe Drinking Water, Water
Quality and Supply, Flood
Control, River and Coastal
Protection Bond Act of 2006.
The purpose of the program is to
assist local governments and create long term prosperity.
Development of the City's
General Plan will help identify
programs and policies that pro-
mote active transportation
opportunities while protecting
Holtville's natural resources.

there may be other opportunities
that the City could benefit from
by utilizing their grant writing
services.
The City Council noted that
there are several areas that the
city could focus on such as the
city parks and recreation areas
like little league, pop warner, and
soccer.
The Council gave direction
to City Staff to look further into
an agreement with California
Consulting for the purpose of
funding sources for the City and
the Cities Originations that provide these sporting activities for
the youth of the City of Holtville.
Group Announces Intent To Purchase Brawley Beef Processing Plant

On the morning of Tuesday,
April 14, 2015, One World Beef
announced an agreement with
National Beef to purchase the
one time Brawley Beef plant for
an undisclosed amount. The
sale is also subject to regulatory
approvals, customary closing
conditions and due diligence
requirements.
According to the press
release provided by One World
Beef, if the transaction goes
smoothly, the plant would be
reopened by the Fourth Quarter
of 2015, sometime between
October 1 and December 31 of
this year.
One World Beef is co-owned
by Brandt Beef of Brawley and
Harris Ranch of Fontana and
distributes beef to restaurants
around the world.
""We have a long history of
leadership and serving as a partner in the region's cattle feeding
and beef processing industries.
My family was involved in the
original development of the
Brawley facility and we supplied cattle to the facility since it
opened in 2001," said Eric
Brandt, president of One World
Beef.
In the release, National
Beef's CEO Tim Klein added
that a successful transaction
would be of great benefit to
Imperial County, with a large
number of employment opportunities as well as bringing back a
local source of beef processing
for area ranchers.
"We are very pleased by the
prospect of One World Beef purchasing the Brawley facility,"
said Klein. "Closing the facility
last year was a very difficult
decision for us to make because
of the impact on our employees
and suppliers."
National Beef's closure of
the Brawley plant in May of last
year led to the loss of 1300 jobs
for Imperial County and an estimated $100 million drop in the
county economy. Brawley lost
nearly a quarter million in utility
tax revenue alone from the
plant's closure.
Local reaction has been optimistic, but cautious. Brawley
Mayor George Nava, originally
part of an ad-hoc committee that
attempted to keep the National
Beef plant open in 2014, said
that the companies are in the
very early stages of the sales
process but was excited to see
the potential possibilities of an
open beef plant.
"I'm happy to see a prospective buyer interested in acquiring the plant," said Nava.
"We're here to help any organization that wants to come in and
do business in Brawley."
The ad-hoc committee,
formed just after the plant's closure was announced, consisted
of Brawley council members
George Nava and Donald
Wharton along with County
Supervisor Ryan Kelley and two
local cattle ranchers.
The committee, with permission from their respective agencies, unsuccessfully attempted
to keep the National Beef plant
open.
"It's probably an opportune
time to bring the ad-hoc committee back together to bring
back and understand what the
new buyers want from us,"
added Nava.
Supervisor Kelley echoed
similar sentiments about the
news.
“I am happy to hear that the
Brawley Beef Packing Facility
will open again. It is great news
for Brawley and Imperial
County,” said Kelley.
“The
Imperial Valley Ad Hoc
Committee looks forward to
speaking with One World Beef
representatives; about, the plant
needs to open and operate.”
Speculation had been running rampant over the past year
as to potential buyers of the
Brawley plant. These supposed
buyers included a Korean beef
exporter and Tyson Foods
among other beef processors
who were interested in a relatively new facility.
Since the plant’s closure in
April 2014, the facility had been
“mothballed,” or running with a
skeleton crew to keep equipment clean and operational
pending a potential sale.

Relay For Life Cancer
Walk Returns To Cattle Call
For 30th Annual Event

“Relay for Life,” the annual
twenty four hour team relay
against cancer, returns to the
Brawley Cattle Call Arena on the
weekend of April 18 and 19.
The annual march, which celebrates cancer survivors and the
ongoing battle victims and families face battling the disease,
includes an opening and closing
ceremony, several themed laps,
and an entire evening of fun and
remembrance.
This year’s event, the thirtieth
annual national one for the
American Cancer Society, is
under the banner of “Hope.”
The march begins at 10 am
with an opening ceremony and
walks for both survivors and their
caregivers. Then, throughout the
evening, hourly events, games
and other activities will take
place.
Teams of walkers, which cur-
rently number ninteen for the
Brawley march, will also camp
alongside the walking trail with
their own gatherings and celebrations.
As of press time, nearly
$7,500 was already raised by the
nineteen teams signed up for the
event, including teams from the
Brawley Union High School
Drumline and the Clinicas del
Pueblo del Salud.
The event used to take place
at the BUHS’s Warne Field, but
warm weather and a lack of shade
prompted the move to the outer
grassy area of the Cattle Call
Arena park.
The twenty-four hour march
symbolizes the continuous fight
against cancer, a disease that
“never sleeps.” The relay aspect
itself signifies the idea that families battle cancer together, not
just the victim of the disease.
Second Taste of the Valley Scholarship
Fundraiser Returns To SDSU-IV Campus

The second annual Taste of
the Valley was held last Friday,
April 10th and once again it was
a successful event that helped
SDSU students.
Various restaurants from the
Imperial Valley were present at
the first annual Taste of the
Valley event and people had various options of where to eat and
have a nice elegant dinner Friday
night. More than 500 people
attended the event that will help
raise money for scholarships.
Last year was successful since
San Diego State raised around
$26,000 that went to support students to continue their education
and seek a master's degree.
"I believe Taste of the Valley
opens doors that many citizens
do not know about. The show is
great, the food is better and the
overall event is a great experience. Raising money for students
that deserve and need the help
while having a great time is a

duties Border Patrol agents
observed a man later identified as
Hugo Guevarra, a 35-year-old
Salvadoran national, as he
entered the United States illegally from Mexico at approximately
11 a.m.
Agents arrested the man
without incident 22 miles west of
the downtown Calexico Port of
Entry.
The man was transported to
the El Centro Border Patrol station, where agents discovered
that Guevarra had numerous
gang affiliated tattoos.
Guevarra openly admitted
that he was a member of the notorious Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13)
criminal street gang out of El
Salvador.
Guevarra is in Border Patrol
custody and will be further
processed for his illegal entry
into the United States.

NOT A GOOD WELCOMING:
It was reported that upon coming
home the caller noticed the lights
on and his side door kicked
inward, signs of forced entry were
evident throughout the home, and
it even appeared that the breaker
box was tampered with, a report
was taken.
FIGHT TIME:
It was reported, that there is a
large gathering of teenagers on the
parking lot getting ready to fight,
the gathering was dispersed soon
after the call was made, none of
the teenagers were caught for
questioning.
UPGRADING TO SATELITE:
It was reported that the caller
swears to hear noises on his roof,
as if someone was up there walking around and banging away,
upon inspecting the locale, it was
found that the neighbor was simply installing a satellite on his
apartment.
PROBLEMS:
It was reported that a married cou-
ple are arguing in plain view from
their front lawn, the female was
also seen hitting the male, the reason was not known, and both subjects left the scene before causing
anymore problems.
SENT ON HIS WAY:
It was reported that a subject is
trying to get in through the
caller’s window situated at the
back of the house, the male subject whom was refusing to go on
his way finally fled the scene, a
report was taken.
RUN AWAY?:
It was reported that the caller’s
son has ran away after being
refused by his parents a sleep over
to his friends house, after an hour
or so, it turned out that the child
was just chasing his dog which
got out of the yard.
FALLIN OVER:
It was reported that the caller is
having a small argument with his
mother who is under the influence
and is falling over herself, the
female subject was laid in bed and

It was reported that a few subjects
in a brown truck are playing loud

It was reported that while the
caller’s neighbor’s were having a
verbal confrontation, One of the
subjects kept kicking items at the

It was reported that five subjects
keep knocking on her front door,
and then taking off running and
hiding behind bushes, trashcans
and vehicles, the caller is worried
that it may be something far more
cynical such as prowling around
for loose windows etcetera, a
report was taken.
K-9 TROUBLES:
It was reported that there is a dog
trying to bite the caller just outside on the fence, the K-9 doesn’t
appear to be leaving soon, nor
does it appear to let the caller go
anywhere, animal control was
contacted.
BEER RUN:
It was reported that two male subjects have walked in and ran out
with a pack of beer from the local
gas station, the two subjects then
fled the scene in a purple pickup
truck, though the subjects were
not caught at the moment, they
were taped on camera.
REFUSING TO LEAVE:
It was reported that the caller’s
boy friend is refusing to leave the
area, the male is lingering around
the residence wanting to stay,
when contacted the caller was
found to be uncooperative, both
were contacted.
CAN’T WE ALL JUST GET
ALONG?:
It was reported that the caller’s
brother is causing a disturbance in
the home, though it is believed
that he is under the influence of
alcohol, he is becoming irate, the
young man left to stay at a friends
home for the night.

It was reported that the caller’s
ex-boyfriend threatened to kill her
and burn her home, the caller stated that she left him recently and is
a bit afraid of him, a report was
taken and she was advised of her
options.
MAKE A HOLE:
It was reported that a ply wood
makeshift door was burned off of
a vacant building, the door was
used to keep the building vacant,
but now people are sleeping in it
at night, the problem was handled.

Pioneers Memorial Hospital
(PMH) Foundation announces
the donation of $100,000 to
Pioneers Hospital for the purchase of new equipment for
Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS).
EUS is a technique using sound
waves known as ultrasound during an endoscopic procedure to
look at or through the wall of the
gastrointestinal tract to see
organs that are otherwise not visible. This innovative technique
provides physicians with the ability to more accurately diagnose
tumors by being able to collect
both high image resolution
images as well as tissue samples
in a minimally invasive way,
ensuring the best possible treatment for patients.

Endoscopy,
Endoscopic Ultrasound and
Interventional Gastroenterology.
He is currently practicing at the
Pioneers Health Center in
Brawley.
The PMH Foundation is a
tax-exempt, 501 (c) (3), not-forprofit organization incorporated
in 1982 with an initial goal of
raising funds to expand the emergency and surgical units, and to
build a new intensive care unit at
Pioneers Memorial Hospital.
After more than 30 years of
extensive community outreach,
and the generous support of individuals and businesses throughout the Imperial County, the
Foundation continues to put its
full support towards providing
advanced equipment and facility
improvements for the benefit of
Pioneers Hospital community

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider

yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

much, spend too recklessly, laugh
too little, drive too fast, get too
angry, stay up too late, get up too
tired, read too little, watch TV
too much, and pray too seldom.
We have multiplied our posses-
sions, but reduced our values.
We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We've
learned how to make a living but
not a life. We've added years to
our life, not life to years.
We've been all the way to the
moon and back, but we have
trouble crossing the street to meet
a new neighbor. We conquered
outer space but not inner space.
We've done larger things, but not
better things.
We've cleaned up the air, but
polluted our soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudices. We write more, but learn
less. We plan more but accomplish less. We've learned to rush,
but not to wait. We build more
computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than
ever, but we communicate less
and less.
These are the times of fast foods
and slow digestion, big men and
small character, steep profits and
shallow relationships. These are
the days of two incomes but more
divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes, These are the days of
quick trips, disposable diapers,
throwaway morality, one-night
stands, overweight bodies and
pills that do everything from
cheer, to quiet, to kill.
Remember, spend some time
with your loved ones, because
they are not going to be around
forever. Remember, say a kind
word to someone who looks up to
you in awe, because the little person soon will grow up and leave
your side.
Remember, to give a warm hug
to the one next to you, because
that is the only treasure you can
give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent.
Remember to say "I love you"
to your partner and your loved
ones, but most of all mean it. A
kiss and an embrace will mend
hurt when it comes from deep
inside of you.
Remember to hold hands and
cherish the moment for someday
that person will not be there
again. Give time to love, give
time to speak and give time to
share the precious thoughts of
your mind.

A LITTLE CLOSER TO
HOME we have the Brawley
Beef plant being looked at once
more as the saga of that business
continues.
It would certainly be a boon to
the area and restore some lost
revenue to the city of Brawley. to
say nothing g of all the lost
wages, lost purchases and lost
independence that go along with
it.
It will laos encourage other people to look at the are and perhaps
get going down here.
There are plenty of projects sitting around waiting to be completed that would enhance all of
Imperial Valley. Instead of resisting them all the time, our elected
leaders should be out encouraging them to come here.
Then, perhaps, one of the poorest areas in the whole country can
achieve some prosperity.
SINCE WE’RE ON THE SUBJECT of government we should
renew also our demand that government let us know what’s going
on. By law, the government is
supposed to report what it does
and make that information public. Sometimes that’s not too
pleasant but that is the nature of
what they are involved in.
Especially in small towns such as
Holtville where it is easy to
sweep everything under the rug
and say the law doesn’t apply to
us.
That’s how you wind up with
scandals like the unfolding saga
in Calexico and loss of interest by
the public in what goes on in their
own back yard by the voters.
Some people want it that way.
Then they can control whatever
they want in whatever manner
they want.
Have fun paying your taxes, but
remember it’s you, the voter, who
ultimately decides on which
direction we go as a country or as
a state or city.

Book Sale & Community Party Join Final Brawley Farmers Market

South Plaza Park in Brawley
was the place to be last Saturday,
April 12, as three events took
place simultaneously throughout
the day and afternoon.
Saturday’s trio of events
included a book sale from the
Public Library, the season’s final
Brawley Farmer’s Market and a
late afternoon Community
Celebration in honor of
The day of activities began
with the seasonal Brawley
Library Book Sale, a quarterly
activity that brings fans of books
with buyers interested in a dis-
count.
The Library’s book sale not
only helps the facility with much
needed funds for summer reading
and adult literacy programs, the
purchase of these books also
frees up space for new tomes in
the facility.
Shortly after the book sale
began, the final Brawley
Farmer’s Market of the season
began on South Plaza street, with
dozens of booths from local
groups providing a variety of
services.
Brawley’s Farmers Markets,
dubbed “Second Saturday” due
to their scheduled dates, brings
local organizations and hobby
craftsmen together to share information and sell small items.
Last year’s final Farmer’s
Market was in May, but hot
weather and a lack of attendance
encouraged the organizers to end
the current season early.
Finally, a multi-hour concert
celebrating the life of Farm
Worker activist Cesar Chavez.
The annual affair began
shortly after the Farmers market
ended and featured several
Mexican music acts in celebration of the activist who had familial and historical ties with the city
of Brawley.

The 6th Annual Car Show
took place in last Saturday
bringing a huge crowd to see a
variety of cars in downtown
Calexico.
The Calexico Business
Improvement District organized a successful event that
drew around 7,000 people
during the all-day event. Car
Clubs from all over the
Imperial
Valley,
Yuma,
Mexicali, and Coachella
Valley participated.
Also at this year's event
was music, dance and martial
arts performance, and finished
with the participation of the
Calexico
High
School
Marching Band and Drumline.
The winners of this year's
event were Mario Martinez
who showed a 1956 Mercury
Montclair
and
Manuel
Escobar from Holtville who
had a classic Chevrolet truck.

Improvement
District, the show's success
brings a tradition that allows
people of the Imperial Valley
to see what downtown
Calexico is all about.
"We do this with the purpose to let people know what
Downtown Calexico offers to
the people that cross the border from Mexicali as well as

parts of the Imperial Valley."
Jimenez said.

Moreno agreed that the
Calexico Car Show is a good
tradition that allows families
to enjoy a great event.
"I'm glad that a lot of people showed up to see the cars,
the motorcycles, and it was a
great event for the Calexico
community to come together."
Moreno said.
While “classic” cars are the norm for these shows, some more
modern vehicles get some time in the sun.
NEARLY 7,000 PEOPLE visited the car show over the weekend,
viewing entries such as this winning Chevrolet Truck.

Finding Hidden Beauty in Our Deserts at Tumco and Gold Rock Ranch

Just about 40 miles from
Holtville is the Tumco and Gold
Ranch historical area. Tumco is
an abandoned gold mining town
and is also one of the earliest gold
mining areas in California. It has
a history spanning some 300
years, with several periods of
boom and bust.
Gold was first discovered by
Spanish colonists as they moved
northward from Sonora, Mexico.
According to legend, two young
boys came into their camp one
evening with their shirts filled
with gold ore. These muchachos
cargados (loaded boys) were the
namesake for the Cargo
Muchacho Mountains, where the
Tumco
deposits
occur.
Following the first discovery of
gold, numerous small mines were
operated by Mexican settlers for
many years.
In 1877, the Southern Pacific
Railroad completed the Yuma to
Los Angeles line of its transcontinental route. With the presence
of the mountains, a gold rush into
the area began. This initial rush
to stake mining claims soon gave
way to mining companies that
moved into the area, purchased
claims and developed the mines
on a large scale. A 12 mile wood
pipeline pumped over 100,000
gallons of water from the
Colorado River per day, and the
railroad carried mine timbers
from northern Arizona for use in
the expansive underground workings.
Ultimately, over 200,000
ounces of gold was taken from
the mines in the area. Tumco was
a typical mining town of its day.
Historical accounts talk of rich
eastern investors, unscrupulous
charlatans and colorful characters
in the raucous townsite and the
mining boom ultimately leading
to financial ruin.
The Tumco townsite went
through several periods of boom
and bust and, although the town
site has long been abandoned,
gold mining was recently conducted near the western end of
this valley. This latest episode in
the history of Tumco began in
early 1995, when American Girl
Mining Joint Venture began operations near the site of some of the
early mines in the area.
Although little can be seen of
Tumco, during the boom time of
the 1890´s, it supported a population of at least 500 people and the
40 and 100 stamp mills of the
mine produced $1,000 per day in
gold.
Our explorers spent a day
wandering around the old town
and what is left of the mines and
the mining camp site at Tumco.
THE BUREAU OF Land Management has secured several of the
old mine shafts to protect people from some of the dangers that
could be inside these mines.
THE RUGGED TERRAIN gives you beautiful vistas that can be seen while hiking through the hundreds of trails that encompass the area.
THERE ARE GIANT holes that have been chipped away in the
rock in the mountains that surround the old mining camps.
There are several areas that you can see the left over searches for
the fine minirals that are hidden deep in the rocks.
THERE WERE SEVERAL areas where the rocks turned a turquoise color from the copper in the

stakeholders in their assessment.
"The progress report will be

take here will help other law
enforcement agencies in the
