Highlight Carrot Festival’s
Second Big Weekend!

The 6th Annual edition of the
Holtville Carrot Festival will
enter its biggest weekend with a
bang Saturday.
It will be the bang of the starters
gun for the Carrot Festival Mile
and 5K run/walk.
Runners will line up at 7 a.m.
for a series of races that follow
the 5k race. Each will be run over
a mile course, but there will be
shortened versions for youngsters
too.
It’s all in keeping with the
Holtville tradition of a healthy
lifestyle aided by carrots.
The theme of this year’s parade
is “Carrots - Know Your Roots”
and runners can share there roots
with the crowds that are sure to
follow the races from beginning
to end.
There is an entry and runners
should get there early if they
haven’t signed up yet. You can
sign up at the Chamber of
Commerce office too.
Following the Mile will come
the strutting, twirling, band blasting Carrot Festival Parade. One
of the largest in the area, the
parade attracts entries form all
over Southeast California.
About 80 entries are expected
for the big event that kicks off at
10 a.m. The parade route goes

set up in front of Holt Park and in
front of Del Sol Market. Some
folks stake out their seats the
night before, so once again get
there early to get a good seat.
While you’re waiting try some
of the food from the vendors in
Holt Park and look over some of
the wares that will be on display
from arts and crafts dealers, both
local and from afar.
If you still have room in your
stomach try some carrot cake and
fish tacos, as well as other delectable treats.
Sunday there will still be plenty
of booths set up in Holt Park and
you can look over some of the
unique items that will be available. It will also be the perfect
time to take in the carnival,
which will run through Sunday
evening. The bright lights will
keep you up and out having a
good time. But, hurry, it will end
Sunday evening for a whole year.
If you’re in town on Friday, you
can stop by the Civic Center and
find out who has won the
Sweepstakes Prize in the annual
Soroptimists’ Carrot Cooking
Contests.
Entries have been judged all
week and then the winners are
judged once more to determine
an overall winner.
Following the Big Parade you
can stick around Holt Park and
find out who won the awards for
best parade entries in a large variety of categories.
Send the kids off to the carnival
that has been setting up on Sixth
Street since Monday. Or join
them yourself and try out some of
the thrill rides or carnival games
that will be available there. Part
of the proceeds go to the
Holtville Chamber of Commerce
to keep it operating all year.
The Maggio Family will be
feted as the 2015 Parade Grand
Marshals. They were pioneers of
carrot planting and harvesting in
Imperial Valley. The chamber
was unclear as to how many family members were going to be
here, but they will lead the big
parade down Fifth street and also
be available afterward.
If will be fun in the sun for 2015
and the Chamber invites everyone to come and enjoy a day in
Holtville.

Calexico Approves Plan
For Adrian Cordova Park

Calexico residents will soon
enjoy a new recreation facility as
the City Council approved the
concept plan for the Adrian
Cordova Park.
In 2007, the City acquired the
Adrian Cordova Park property
located at the corner of Meadow
Drive and Clinton Drive, as a
condition for the approval of the
Bravo/Rodiles
Subdivision.
Approximately five acres of the
property have been developed
into a soccer field and parking
lot. The remaining 10 acres of
property is undeveloped.
With the help of interested
citizens and the Calexico Parks
and Recreation Commission, a
concept park plan was developed
for the Adrian Cordova Park in
2011, as part of a grant applica-
tion submitted to the California
Department of Parks and
Recreation.
The budget adopted by the
City Council on September 16,
2014, contained $1,680,724 in
Measure H bond funds for the
development of the Adrian
Cordova Park. On January 21,
2015, the Calexico Parks and
Recreation Commission met and
recommended that the City
Council approve the concept and
recommend that the City Council
approve the concept plan developed in 2011, and authorize the
hiring of consultants, architects
and engineers to begin designing
and developing park.
The concept design contemplates having three baseball
fields, basketball courts, and soccer fields.

The Brawley City Council
spent a significant amount of
time discussing the issue of sidewalk sales at their meeting on
Tuesday, February 3, 2015.
However, a consensus could not
be reached, which mirrored similar discussions from previous
committees.
The matter has been a controversial one for Brawley as there
are as many businesses that want
sidewalk sales as those who do
not.
The recently formed
Brawley Business Advisory
Committee discussed the matter
and could not reach a consensus
after much debate, according to
City liaison Donald Wharton.
Brawley City Manager
Rosanna Moore also contacted a
number of Downtown Brawley
business owners for their direct
opinions on the subject of sidewalk sales. "The opinions were
as varied as can be," said Moore.
The
Brawley
Planning
Commission did approve a recommendation in August 2014
that included a modest fee for
year round sales and to encourage the Brawley Chamber of
Commerce
the
Downtown
Merchants organizations to
develop guidelines for displays
and sales.
A concern raised by a
Brawley resident about potential
takeovers of the sidewalk and
ensuring safe pedestrian traffic.
The resident also mentioned the
situation in Calexico, which has
seen businesses with displays
that entirely block the sidewalks,
forcing pedestrians to walk into
the street to avoid them.
In a letter to the City Council,
Brawley Chamber executive
director Jason Zara asked that
sidewalk sales be approved and
offered his organization's help,
but admitted that there wasn't be
a perfect solution to the issue.

member
Sam
Couchman said that while he was
an opponent of sidewalk sales, he
admitted that it was probably
time to have a trial period.
Allowing sidewalk sales
would require a change to the
city's Downtown Specific Plan.
The council eventually
agreed to have city staff create
provisions to the current
Downtown Specific Plan that
would allow for a trial period, an
application fee and process and
address other concerns the council and the public had.
In other Brawley news...
• The Brawley City Council
voted to change their firework
sales permitting process to allow
for additional tax-exempt groups
to apply for booths.
The matter was brought to the
council for consideration after
confusion last year nearly prevented two organizations from
consideration.
Both organizations, also tax
exempt groups affiliated with
Brawley Union High School and
the Brawley Elementary School
District, did not meet the fireworks ordinance requirements of
being a 501(c)3 organization.
Both groups were eventually
allowed to sell fireworks under
the Brawley Chamber of
Commerce banner, of which both
parent organizations are members.
Considerations for the second
reading of the ordinance would
include preventing one organization from having multiple booths
during the summer.
The city will still only allow a
maximum of five booths
throughout the city.
The matter needed to be
resolved as the deadline from the
fireworks company was drawing
near.
Resource Fair Offers Help To Calexico Homeless

Several agencies gathered
last week to organize a resource
fair
for
Imperial
Valley
Homeless.
The event was held this past
Wednesday, January 28, at the
Calexico Women's Improvement
Club where more than 60 homeless people from Calexico and
Imperial Valley arrived to get
information about health and
other services they qualify.
Among the agencies present
at the event were Imperial
County Social Services, Social
Security, Area Agency on Aging,
Calexico Neighborhood House,
Housing Authority, Imperial
County Health Department,
Mexican Consulate, Imperial
Valley Food Bank, and others.
This event is part of the
effort the City of Calexico began
this year to support the homeless
population in this winter season.
Recently, the city installed temporary shelters to be used for 45
days to house the homeless and
have their meals.
The shelters are scheduled to
be there until February 22nd
unless the Calexico City Council
gives direction to take them down
early if there are not enough volunteers.
Wednesday's event was part
of a plan to keep supporting the
homeless. Orlando Johnson,
Chairman of the Imperial County
Homeless Task Force, said that
the efforts made in Calexico are
becoming a role model for other
cities in the Imperial Valley.
"What Calexico is doing is
being analyzed through the valley and other cities are using
Calexico as a model on how to
take care of their homeless."
Johnson said. "These men and
women are taking advantage of
the information given to them
and some of them might qualify
for some of our HUD units we
have available."
The City of El Centro is also
looking at the program.
Johnson said that the city
managers and county officials
should meet in order to see how
they are going to develop programs.

Brawley Chamber Seeking Ways To Improve Cattle Call Queen’s Contest

The Brawley Chamber of
Commerce hosted a special meeting on Monday, February 2, 2015
seeking input on the possible
future of the Cattle Call Queen’s
Contest.
The meeting, spearheaded by
Brawley Chamber Executive
Director Jason Zara and Events
Coordinator Jodi Rollins, sought
input
The meeting was attended by
past and current Cattle Call
Queens along with former Queen
mothers, chamber members and
other interested people.
Chamber board members
Darren Smith and Kay Day
Pricola joined the most recent
Cattle Call Queens Alexandra
Baran and Carli Rose, along with
former queens Kristie Kussman
and Liz Baran and some Cattle
Call Moms.
While the meeting had an
agenda consisting of several topics, the discussion instead consisted of ideas and thoughts
brought to the Chamber by the
interested personnel.
Of interest to all parties was
the creation of a “supply list” of
people able to help the committee
and interested queens with necessary items.
Also of interest to many at the
meeting was the status of funds
raised in previous years.
While many were under the
impression that money generated
by previous events would carry
over into the following year’s
contest. However, the contest
was always listed as a fundraiser
for the Chamber itself and money
raised funded chamber activities.
Zara said that he would not be
opposed to changing the designation for the future.
The 90-minute meeting also
included a plea for members to
join a steering committee as well
as other organizational groups.

College administrator and community leader Dean Leptich
passed away in El Centro on
December 16, 2014.
Dean was born in Redmond,
Washington, on October 26,
1933, to parents of Hungarian
and Swedish descent. When he
was 2 years old the family moved
to San Diego where he was raised

and educated. Dean's leadership
abilities became readily apparent
when he became president both
of his senior high school class
and of his senior class at San
Diego State University. After
graduating from SDSU, he began
his teaching career in San Diego
area high schools in 1955. Dean's
career as an educator was placed
on hold when he enlisted in the
Navy (1956-59). A graduate of
the Naval Intelligence Center,
Washington, D.C., he served as a
Naval Intelligence Officer on the
USS Hornet in the Western
Pacific. Dean was proud to serve
his country. Full military honors
will be held at Miramar Naval Air
Station at a future time to be
determined.
In June of 1957 Dean married
Sandra Triplett whom he met
while training in Washington,
D.C. After military discharge in
1959, the couple returned to San
Diego, where Dean continued his
teaching career. He served as
Dean of Students and faculty
member at Grossmont High
School (1960-63) and was
appointed Assistant Dean of
Students at San Diego State
University (1963-65).
In 1965 Dean was recruited
away from SDSU by Imperial
Valley College President Terrill
Spencer to become the Dean of
Students (later Vice-President)
for this new campus located in
the geographic center of Imperial
Valley. One of Dean's major
accomplishments was the development of the nation's first community college comprehensive
support program for disabled students (1972). He stayed in his
administrative position until
1981 at which time he returned to
the classroom as a Professor of
Speech Communication and
Debate.
The
Imperial
Community College Board of
Trustees acknowledged his outstanding teaching success with a
Master Teacher Recognition
award.
At the same time (1981) Dean
became the founder and president/general manager of the
KSIQ-FM (96.1) radio station in
Brawley. This 50,000- watt FM
station blanketed Imperial and
Mexicali Valley and received the
number one Arbitron FM rating
in a seven-station market. Dean
was an ardent advocate for the
Arts, not only in Imperial County,
but also in Mexicali, where he
promoted concerts, theater and
other cultural events. In recognition of his contributions, the
Instituto de Cultura de Baja
California awarded him an honorary doctorate. In a life devoted
to serving others, Dean was a
member of numerous Imperial
Valley organizations including
Brawley Chamber of Commerce
(two-term president, 1973-74),
Brawley Boys Club (founding
member, 1968, and president,
1972), Big Brothers/Big Sisters
of Imperial Valley (founding
president, 1990), Imperial Valley
College Museum Board of
Advisors member, State of
California
Developmental
Disabilities Board for ImperialSan Diego Counties (chairman,
1977-79), plus Jaycees, Rotary,
and Optimist Clubs. Upon his
retirement Dean and wife Sandy
returned to San Diego where he
continued his volunteer activities: San Diego Epilepsy Society,
Lake Murray Kiwanis Club,
Retired NFL Football Players
Association, the San Diego
County Grand Jury, and the
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
at University of CA San Diego,
where he was President (200506) and Council member. Dean
will be remembered for his skills
as a teacher, mentor and selfless
community leader.
He is predeceased by his wife
Sandra (43 years), father Martin
and mother Ethel.
He is survived by his sons
Andrew
(Anastasia),
Kurt
(Sheila) of Brawley and Chad of
Julian, plus granddaughters Sara
and Katie Leptich of La Mesa.
He is also survived by longtime
friend and companion Marilou
Kratzenstein of San Diego. Dean
was a wonderful, husband, father
and grandfather. "G-PA Dean"
will be remembered by his granddaughters as the caring man that
would make room in his recliner
and bring any Dr. Seuss book to
life at a moment's notice. In the
Willard Ave. neighborhood of
Brawley he is remembered as the
instigator of pool parties, ping
pong tournaments and barbeques.
An Imperial Valley memorial
service will be held on Friday,
February 6, 2015 in the Science
Auditorium room number 2734
of Imperial Valley College.
Visitors are requested to use the
north parking lot. The remembrance will begin at 10 a.m.

with baby farm animals.
Additionally, the “Red Neck
Rodeo” -- which tests the skills of
local truck drivers and farm
equipment operators -- will again
highlight the closing day of the
fair. Additionally, for a second
consecutive year, racing will
return on March 7.
These attractions are in addition to the numerous local acts
and displays that are a fair tradition as well as one of the most
successful Junior Livestock programs in the country. Last year,
the 717 animals sold at the Junior

is finally moving forward with
this project that will help recreation in Calexico." Councilman
Mandy Real said. "We need this
lot."
The Cordova Park has been a
subject of discussion for many
years since part of the park was
not finished due to the bankrupt-
cy of the developer company that
constructed housing units but the
housing project was left abandoned. The park, named after
fallen police officer Adrian
Cordova, was not finished and
half is undeveloped.
In other news, the Calexico
City Council approved extending
the Homeless Shelter in Calexico
until February 22nd. The council
decided that the shelter will be at
Rockwood Park at the end of
their 45 day run as originally
approved by the council in
January. The Council voted 3-2
with council members Castro and
Kim voting against the shelters.
Ricochet Mixer Celebrates New
Silver Star Banquet Room

The Ricochet Recreation
Center hosted the January
Networking Mixer for the
Imperial Chamber of Commerce
on the evening of Thursday,
January 29, 2015 to celebrate the
opening of their Silver Star
Banquet Room.
The mixer, which included
tours of the Ricochet Center
itself, featured music from local
jazz band “Standing Room Only”
along with hors d’oeurves, drinks
and other amenities.
The Silver Star Banquet
Room features room for two hundred people to host special events
and large meetings in a comfortable atmosphere.
Ricochet, which opened last
summer, features over 25,000
square feet of play area, consisting of large, heavy duty trampolines, basketball courts and other
activities.
Other features include a children’s foam pit and a trick trampoline practice area.
The facility also includes
space for small meetings, free wifi in the center’s Parents lounge
and a healthy snack store located
near the building’s entrance.
Upcoming plans for the
Ricochet center include new
Hacienda Grill restaurant and an
18-hole indoor golf course.
Members of the Hacienda
Catering business in Brawley are
also invested in the Ricochet center.
“It’s a great place to work,”
said Betsy Enders, a former
BUHS Physical Education
teacher who now helps at
Ricochet.

GET DOWN:
A few subjects are parked out in
their drive way listening to rap
music which is very loud, the
music was keeping the caller up.
The caller did bear the music up
until two in the morning, the subjects were contacted and advised
to turn their music down
CEMENT SLAB:
An unknown subject threw a
piece of cement slab at the
caller’s vehicle. The vehicle’s
roof was dented, the caller was
unable to get a good look at the
subject. The caller was advised of
his options.
NOT REFUSING TO PARTY:
A white male subject who is
under the influence is loitering in
the locale, the caller had asked
him to leave but he refused, The
subject then began to make a lot
of ruckus until an officer arrived,
he then left the area and complied
to not return.
URBAN ART:
The caller has discovered fresh
graffiti in the area, the caller also
saw a group of men leaving, the
graffiti was photographed by the
caller. The caller was advised and
counseled of his options, he was
advised to call back should they
return to tag more of the caller’s
building.
KEEP IT DOWN:
A caller can hear a few males
talking loudly while the neighborhood dogs bark, the caller
found it suspicious. Though they
were not there when they arrived,
the caller was advised to call
back should they return.
JUST GOING HOME:
A subject was walking down the
alley in the middle of the night,
the caller stated that the subject is
making the dogs in the area bark
along with one of the neighbors
yelling out for silence. The subject was found, he was just going
home through the alley
SEE YOU LATER:
Two male subjects were found in
the area, they were loitering and
harassing people as they passed
by. The caller stated that they’d
be asked but they refused, they
were gone upon arrival, the caller
was advised.
CAME AND LEFT:
The caller was in the locale visiting a friend when suddenly, an
unknown subject was throwing
objects at the caller’s truck. The
caller stated that the subject was
gone as quickly as he arrived, the
caller was advised of his options,
minor damages were left.
A PIECE OF MY MIND:
A male subject is loitering in
front of the store, refusing to
leave and bothering customers.
The subject was pan-handling for
loose change and when he was
ignored or passed over, he would
get irate and yell at the customers. The subject was asked to
leave the business, he complied,
but not without yelling at the officer.
FIGHT CLUB:
Two subjects are making a lot of
noise in the alley, when the caller
went down to take a look he
found that they were having a
large fight. An officer did arrive
at the scene, the group took off
running. The caller was advised
to call back should the group start
their fight club again.
TURN IT DOWN:
A group in the neighborhood are
having loud music playing while
they relax. The caller had asked
the group to keep the music down
but they refused to. An officer
finally made contact with the
group, they complied to keep the
music down. The caller was
advised to call back should the
group decide to turn it back up.
DIVING:
A homeless male subject was in
the area, the caller stated that he
was looking thru various dumpsters in the alley, possibly looking for scraps. The homeless
male subject was not found in the

To Smuggle Heroin Inside Body Cavity
U.S. Customs and Border
Protection officers at the
Calexico downtown port of entry
Thursday arrested a female
pedestrian after discovering she
was concealing more than a halfpound of heroin inside her body
cavity.
The incident occurred shortly
after 2 p.m. on January 22, when
a CBP officer encountered a 28year-old U.S. citizen after she
arrived at the downtown port on
foot. The officer noticed the
woman appeared nervous and
escorted her to a secure area for
additional inspection.
During the inspection and
following an alert from a narcotics detector dog, officers suspected that the woman was possibly concealing narcotics internally, and transported her to a local
hospital for a medical evaluation.
More than a half-pound of
heroin was discovered inside her
body cavity, with an estimated
street value of almost $6,000.
The woman, a U.S. citizen a
resident of Thermal, California,
was arrested and turned over to
the custody of Homeland
Security Investigations agents for
further processing. She was later
transported to the Imperial
County Jail to await arraignment.

home. The subject was not spotted in the area, the caller was
counseled and advised of his
options.
BEING KIDS:
Two young male subjects around
the age of 12 years old were having a physical fight, the kids were
separated and brought to their
parents where both parties were
counseled and advised to stop
horse playing. The two kids complied to stop horsing around.
THEY CAN FIGHT:
Two sisters are having an argument which seems to have lasted
for more than an hour. The two
young women were brought
together with their mother. All
were counseled; they complied to
work out their problems in a civil
manner.

should they return.
WRONG HOUSE:
It was reported that there is a
heavy tall man on the caller’s
door knocking and asking to be
let in, the subject is under the
influence of alcohol, the subject
was gone on arrival, the caller
was advised to call back should
she return.
FORCED CHANCE:
It was reported that an unknown
subject has just broken the
caller’s bedroom window, it is
unknown if it was attempt for a
burglary or just plain vandalism,
a report was taken, no subjects
were found in the area, the caller
was advised of his options.
INTENSE:
A male and female couple are
having an intense argument, the
caller then stated that the female
half is caring an infant which is

My Money Flies Away With
‘The Pass’; Carrot Fest Time!
ANYBODY OUT THERE
WHO DIDN’T WATCH
the Super Bowl on Sunday?
All 350 million Americans
tuned in to watch the
Seahawks do the impossible - snatch defeat from the
jaws of victory.
Along with that little pass
into the teeth of the
Patriots’ defense went my
Super Bowl bet. It just
sprouted wings and fluttered off into the upper confines of AT&T Stadium.
I think I could see it amidst
all the confetti just fluttering around.
Anyway, it was a pretty
good game and the halftime
show was great. The fireworks and a floating Katy
Perry were worth the price
of admission.
It sure was a long way
from the marching band
halftime show that used to
be the staple of football.
The game brought to an
end the season where
cyberbullies used football
players to call attention to
their causes without any
form of due process.
It also brought an end to
nonsensical
scandals
involving deflated footballs.
Perhaps that was a deflated football thrown by
Rusell Wilson at the end of
the game. But I wouldn’t
want to start any rumors...
Now its on to the winter
sports scene and the start of
the pro golf tour.
We can all start saying
“wait til next year” when it
comes to football once
again, which has truly
become our national sport.
Get out and do something
fun now that the nice winter
weather is here. You know,
the stuff that brings the
snowbirds south every
year? It won’t last long
enough so enjoy it while
you can. And support your
local community.
IT’S CARROT FESTIVAL
WEEK
IN
HOLTVILLE if you
haven’t noticed. You can
tell by the carnival which
has set up on Sixth Street
behind city hall.
You can’t tell due to the
lack of carrots, which we
find unusual. In fact, there
gets to be less and less carrots around town each year.
We think there should be
some nice carrot displays in
the park and some carrot
decorations around the
main streets. At least people
would know something is
happening.
But, in case you missed it,
you can mosey over to the
civic center in the park and
take in one of the nightly
cooking contests sponsored
by
the
Holtville
Soroptimists Club.
There will be some mighty
good eating and probably
some carrot cake too. These
contests have been a tradition in Holtville as long as
there has been a Carrot
Festival. If you get there on
the last night, which is
Friday, You can find out
who the big winners are.
And if you want to follow
up on the recipes just pick
up a copy of the Holtville
Tribune Carrot Festival
Edition slated for Feb. 12th.
It will have recipes, results
and features from this
year’s pageant brought to
you by the folks who bring
you your weekly newspaper.
In addition to the cooking
contests you can come over
for the Big Parade, which
starts at 10 a.m. along Fifth
Street. There should be
about 80 entries marching
in step and otherwise. We
hope there will also be
some carrots on display.
Before the parade there is
the Carrot Festival Mile run
and 5K race.
Stick around and join the
throngs in Holt Park for the
annual Arts & Crafts Show
that will provide you with
plenty of interesting and
unusual things to buy.
There will be plenty of
entertainment and food to
eat as well. And plenty of
interesting people to talk to.
The Carrot Festival draws
people from all over the
continent.
Don’t forget to come out
and look around once more
on Sunday, where booths
will be set up in Holt Park
and the carnival will be
going full tilt.

SUPERVISOR’S CORNER Calexico Port Of Entry To Begin In Late
2015, Update On Public Benefits Commitee
with John Renison
I wanted to brief you this
week on the upcoming appointments to the County Public
Benefits Committee. The solar
industry committed to providing
the county monies that can be
used to support various projects
in Imperial County that can be
deemed beneficial for our residents. The committee that recommends to the Board will be
appointed on February 10th by
the Board of Supervisors. One
appointee
from
each
Supervisorial District will be
appointed on that day,.
Recommendations from the
committee will be considered by
the Board of Supervisors for final
action. I ask that citizens that
have worthwhile projects in mind
forward them for consideration.
Projects should benefit the overall community. Some ideas
include Senior Citizen and youth
programs. I will be asking for the
committee to be very diligent in
their recommendations to the
Board of Supervisors.
On another note, ther downtown Port of Entry project will
get underway during the fourth
quarter of 2015. Groundbreaking
should take place around that
time. I will be meeting with GSA
in the next few weeks with an
update. We are hopeful, the new
POE will be completed late in
2017 or early 2018.
County and City staff will be
scheduling a joint meeting soon
along with Supervisors Ray
Castillo and myself. Topics of
discussion include the future of
west Second St. as it crosses the
bridge into the County just west
of the airport. The City and county will be working closely on this
project. This project will enable
phase 2 of the Gran Plaza as it
becomes a reality.
It appears that the Iris solar
project that was acted on by the
Board this week will be one of
the last for 2015. The board
appears to be favoring a type of
moratorium to further study these
projects. You might recall less
that 2% of farmland has been
converted to solar projects
although you might think it
exceeds that. It was the original
intention of the Board that
acreage would not exceed that
figure. I have been in contact
with many farming interests and
listening to their concerns. If I
can be of any assistance with any
county concerns, contact me anytime.

Brawley Takes Title at Holtville’s Rotary Club Wrestling Tournament

There were 30 teams that
competed at Holtville High
School this past weekend for the
52nd annual Holtville Rotary
Club Wrestling Tournament. The
Holtville tournament has become
one of the favorites among the
wrestling teams and this year was
no different. By Friday morning,
you could see the wrestlers as
they arrived for the tournament.
The tourney started with six
different wrestling mats spread
out to cover the entire gymnasium floor. The sound was deafening as the matches began, with
coaches yelling and teammates
cheering on, along with family
and friends in the stands.
The competition started on
Friday afternoon and continued
until the finals Saturday that
began around 5:45 p.m. With all
of the fanfare, one by one the
wrestlers were announced by
their weight class, and then it was
the teams by total points going
into the finals.
Before the final matches
began, there was the singing of
the National Anthem. The young
girl's voice faded a bit, and one
by one, the crowd joined in to
sing along until the entire crowd
was singing at the top of their
voices, which brought goose
bumps to everyone in attendance.
The matches then began, and
one by one arms were raised in
championship.
At the final match was the
heavyweight match. Drew Garcia
from Sweetwater and Ricky
Belmontez from Mira Mesa grappled on the mat. The first round
saw Belmontez break away from
Garcia and as he did, he ran
around the mat to the crowds
delight. The match went back and
forth, coming up to a tie at the
end of 3 rounds 4 - 4, which led
to a tie-breaking 4th round.
Garcia went down and he broke
away for 1 point, then it was
Belmontez's turn. He went down
in the 5th round, and again he
broke free and ran around the mat
again, igniting the crowd. The
score now tied again at 5 - 5.
Belmontez got to choose, and
again he went down, and again he
broke free, and again he ran
around the mat to a roaring crowd
and a wonderful finish to this
year's competition.
30 TEAMS CAME to compete and when it was all over one team stood on top of the podium,
Brawley with 297 points took this year's title for the Holtville Rotary Club Wrestling Tournament.
Most local teams did well at with 294 total team points and
Holtville finished in 6th place
this year's tournament including with over 80 points ahead of sec- with 104 points. Imperial roundthis year's first-place team points ond place finisher’s,-last year's ed out the top 10 with a 10th

The big news in Calexico
starting 2015 was the issue of the
homeless population being
helped in this winter time. Kudos
to the members of Calexico High
School Class of 1982 and the volunteers who have come forward
to help in this very good deed for
the less fortunate. They gave up
their New Year's celebration and
decided to spend it helping them
escape freezing temperatures. It
was great to see that "Only in
Calexico" had a positive spin
after a lot of negative stuff that
came out of the city in previous
years. The homeless support network has become a highlight, not
only in Calexico, but in the
Imperial Valley as well. It was
great to see the community from
business people, families, youth,
and several others donate food,
clothing, toiletries, or simply by
volunteering their time to help at
the shelter give their part to this
effort.
As reported here on the
Calexico Chronicle for the last
couple of weeks, it was on New
Year's Eve when a group of residents decided to offer a shelter to
the homeless during the freezing
temperatures during the holiday
season. It started out at the De
Anza Gym, later went to the
Methodist Church, and now at
Rockwood Park. The Calexico
City Council decided to step in
and shelters were purchased to
have it as a temporary location
for 45 days.
The original direction of the
council was to have the shelter at
the old courthouse, but it was
decided to have it at the park.

Festival has begun and Holtville
is getting ready for the big weekend to come. Workers from
Butler Amusements have been
busy checking every nut and bolt
and cleaning every ride for
today's start of the carnival.
Chefs from all around the Valley
have been busy preparing their
special dishes for the Carrot
Festival Carrot Cooking Contest
that has been running every
evening this week at 6:00 pm. at
the Holtville Civic Center. This is
put on by the Holtville
Soroptimist Club and sponsored
by the Holtville Tribune - I.V.
Weekly and Calexico Chronicle.
The Big Day will be
Saturday, starting with a 5k race,
then the ever popular Carrot
Festival Parade that will start at
10:00 am.
Eat a lite breakfast so that you
will be able to enjoy all of those
special dishes that will be prepared by the various vendors that
will be preparing their specialties.
Holt Park will also be filled with
vendors offering their goods from
art to yoyos.
Something different this year
is the food vendors and special
item vendors have been invited
back for Sunday giving another
day for all of the festivities.
Holtville will be ready, the
weather will be awesome so start
planning your week and weekend
activities by including Holtville
in those plans. See you there.

Homeless Need More Help!

have good points; the issue of
homelessness needs to be
addressed by every single level of
government in Imperial County
in order to try to eradicate it.
According to the National
Coalition for the Homeless, the
two biggest factors driving
homelessness are poverty and the
lack of affordable housing. In
2014, 37 million people, or 12.7
percent of the American population was living in poverty. The
U.S. Department of Housing and
Urban Development (HUD) estimates that 49,933 veterans are
homeless on any given night.
Unfortunate circumstances such
as the loss of job, income, foreclosure, or bad decisions in life
led them to the situation they are
in right now.
So with all this happening in
Calexico its makes it a great
opportunity for government and
private agencies in the Imperial
Valley to seize the moment and
develop housing programs,
health benefit orientation and
plans to fight homelessness in the
valley. The winter season is tough
for many who have to live in 39
degree temperatures. Now think
about what is going to happen in

the summer months when we hit
120 degrees. The elevated heat
temperatures are the main cause
of death among homeless and
that is what the Homeless Task
Force should focus on before the
summer arrives. Obviously, there
are different needs for the homeless population in each city and
they should be addressed accordingly.
The focus is on Calexico at
this moment but the movement
has been gaining momentum all
over the Valley. I would like to
recognize the efforts of Daniel
Ochoa Jr. who has been an advocate for homeless people everywhere.
Two weeks ago, Ochoa went
before the El Centro City Council
and asked them for their support.
Ochoa, who also faced homelessness for a period of time, is working towards using the model from
Calexico and trying to apply it in
El Centro. The momentum is
here and should be taken advantage to its fullest. Neighborhood
House of Calexico has worked
for many years by providing
meals and other services, but this
year is when the awareness and
participation from the community became stronger.
All this positive awareness
about homelessness in Imperial
Valley should be a call to action
and to start developing serious
plans to support the veteran
fought for the United States and
no longer has a home. It should
be a call to action to support the
men and women that lost their
homes and jobs because of the
bad economy to find them shelter
and get them back to work. It
should be a call to action to help
the children that don't have a
home and give them the proper
place to live in order for them to
have a great childhood and grow
healthy. Homelessness is something that needs to be looked after
and provide help for those that
have trappped themselves in a
hole and are looking to get out
and restart their lives.
If homelessness is reduced,
we all win.

noted artist Lee Romero at their
February 14, 2015 luncheon. Mr.
Romero is a graduate of Calexico
High School and was a recipient
of a scholarship from the club .
He will be showing his art and
photographs at the Carmen
Durazo Cultural Arts Center from
March 7th to the 27th.
We are asking members to

“Worst Street In Brawley” To Be Repaired Thanks To Federal Funds

Brawley’s South Palm
Avenue, regarded by residents
as one of the worst streets in the
city to travel on, will be receiving a long needed repair in
October thanks to federal funding.
The street, specifically
between Brawley’s Main Street
and K Street, has been a source
of complaints from residents
due to the condition of the
street. Deep cracks, loose
asphalt and large potholes make
the street rough to ride for many
drivers.
Additionally, a nearby
CalTrans large vehicle depot,
along with daily travel of large
buses from Imperial Transit,
make repair schedules difficult
to form.
“It feels like I have to
change my shocks every time I
drive down the street” said one
resident.
The street was originally
scheduled for repair in 2016,
but money allocated through
the
Regional
Surface
Transportation Program sped
that process up a few months.
According to Brawley City
Manager Rosanna Moore,
South Palm Avenue is classified
as a “major traffic collector”
and therefore qualifies for the
federal program.
The news first broke on
Facebook last Friday from
council member Helen Noriega.
Noriega’s post also incldued
the message “I know to some of
you it seems a long way off but
it will be here sooner than we
think.”
The other half of the road,
from Main Street north to River
Drive, will be repaired sometime in Spring 2016.
Details have not been
released about possible detours
for Imperial Transit bus routes
and CalTrans vehicles in the
nearby vehicle yard.
The window for finished
repairs will be from October 1,
2015 and September 31, 2016.

A. Annual registration fees for a business that uses a commercial weighing or measuring device
or devices shall consist of a business location fee; a Department of Food and Agriculture administrative fee, as specified in Section 12241 of the Business and Professions Code; and a device
fee, as specified in subdivision C of this section. The business location fee and the device fee
for any business registered by a new owner after July 1 shall only be charged half of the
