AFFIRMATION OF GOD
Fourteen men will be ordained deacons Sunday
afternoon at Holy Name Cathedral during a Mass
offered by Chicago auxiliary Bishop Francis Kane.
Several of the other Chicago bishops will
concelebrate as will Bishop Michael Olson of Fort
Worth, Texas, who has a relative getting ordained
for Chicago. The deacons will work in Chicago’s
parishes visiting the sick, tending to the poor,
preaching and proclaiming the gospel, baptizing,
officiating at marriage ceremonies, praying for the dead at wakes and
cemeteries and fulfilling what deacons have done since the days of the
original deacons; that Class included the martyr St. Stephen. Most of
them keep their careers, their “day jobs”: many are happily married
and continue raising their children. We pray for and are proud of
Chicago’s new deacons.

“Can you spare some change
so I can get something to eat?”
We want to help but we are:
 Uneasy when approached by someone in need,
 Worried about pulling out a wallet or opening a purse
 Concerned that our money might be used for drugs or
alcohol
Those who ask for money on the street have many needs: a
job, a place to live, counseling, - and a way out of a bad
situation. Professionals are the best people to help with all
these needs.
What we can do is help make sure no one goes hungry. We
can at least buy this person a cup of coffee or a sandwich.
Chicago Shares vouchers are a convenient, safe and
constructive means to provide meals and other necessities
for hungry people. Here’s how they work:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Purchase $5 books of $1 Chicago Shares vouchers,
Give vouchers to needy people who ask for money on
the street,
Recipients redeem vouchers for food and other basic
necessities at participating merchants, and
Chicago Shares reimburses merchants for all vouchers
redeemed.
Chicago Shares vouchers will be on sale at Holy Name
Cathedral this Sunday, May 17, 2015 in the Cathedral
Vestibule, inside the State Street entrance from 9AM until
12:15PM.
Chicago Shares is not an answer to poverty or homelessness
- but it is a start.
Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass
The Archdiocesan Golden Wedding Anniversary

celebration should contact Dawn Swanson at

Easter Liturgical Music The Easter Season is a joyous part of the church
year that is reflected in the seasonal liturgical music.
With the Easter Season, the church rejoices in the Paschal mystery of
Christ’s victory over death. It is fitting that in this Easter, the Chicago
church also rejoices in the victory over death of its Shepherd emeritus,
Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I.

H. Ricardo Ramirez
Time is running out. Let those having wives act as not having them, Those
weeping act as not weeping, those rejoicing act as not rejoicing, those
buying act as not buying, those using the world act as not using it fully.
For the world in its present form is passing away. Go into the whole
world! Proclaim the gospel to every creature! Whoever believes and is
baptized will be saved. Know that these signs will accompany those who
believe: In my name they will drive demons. They will pick up serpents
with their hands, and if they drink deadly things it will not harm them.
They will lay hands on the sick and they will recover. Go out to the whole
world: tell the good news! Mark 16:15-20

May’s book is The Lamb’s Supper: The Mass as
Heaven on Earth by Sco Hahn. Of all things
Catholic, there is nothing that is so familiar as the
Mass. With its unchanging prayers, the Mass fits
Catholics like their favorite clothes. Yet most
Catholics si ng in the pews on Sundays fail to see
the powerful supernatural drama that enfolds
them. Pope John Paul II described the Mass as
"Heaven on Earth," explaining that what "we
celebrate on Earth is a mysterious par cipa on in
the heavenly liturgy."
The Lamb’s Supper reveals a long-lost secret of the Church: The early
Chris ans' key to understanding the mysteries of the Mass was the
New Testament Book of Revela on. With its bizarre imagery, its
mys c visions of heaven, and its end-of- me prophecies, Revela on
mirrors the sacrifice and celebra on of the Eucharist. Beau fully
wri en, in clear direct language, bestselling Catholic author Sco
Hahn's new book will help readers see the Mass with new eyes, pray
the liturgy with a renewed heart, and enter into the Mass more fully,
enthusias cally, intelligently, and powerfully than ever before.
About the Club:

May 17, 2015: The Ascension of the Lord
We are called.
“But they went forth and
preached everywhere, while the
Lord worked with them and
confirmed the Word with
accompanying signs.” With those
words St. Mark closes his Gospel
— our Gospel reading on this day,
the Solemnity of the Ascension of
the Lord. This has not changed as
we continue to preach everywhere with the support
and presence of the Lord.
We are all called to discipleship, and practicing
good stewardship is a way to be the disciples Jesus
expects us to be. Part of our discipleship involves
evangelization — that is, living out the Good News
in all we do. No matter where we are or what we are
doing we represent Jesus and we represent the
Church. The Ascension was the close of Jesus’
physical ministry on Earth, but it was not the end of
His ministry.
That is where His followers and Apostles continued,
and where we need to continue today. In his
exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis
reminds us of this call to evangelization: “Anyone
who has experienced God’s saving love does not
need much time or lengthy training to go out and
proclaim that love.” Stewardship-discipleshipevangelization are calls to action, to continue
Christ’s presence on Earth.
