Easter Liturgical Music The Easter Season is a joyous part of the church
year that is reflected in the seasonal liturgical music.
With the Easter Season, the church rejoices in the Paschal mystery of
Christ’s victory over death. It is fi ng that in this Easter, the Chicago
church also rejoices in the victory over death of its Shepherd emeritus,
Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I.
Cardinal George appreciated Holy Name Cathedral parish and the
liturgies that he presided over. He was a strong supporter of the sacred
music that was an integral part of these liturgies as well as the
Archdiocesan liturgies celebrated at Holy Name Cathedral such as the
Chrism Mass, Confirma ons and Ordina ons.
Cardinal George had many favorite sacred music works such as Ecce
Sacerdos Magnum by Johann Bap ste Singenberger and Ave Verum
Corpus by W. A. Mozart.
For Easter Sunday in 2014, a new work was created and dedicated to his
eminence wri en for chorus, organ and brass quintet: Terra tremuit. He
had related his apprecia on of new music created in his honor and
valued the crea vity and dedica on of the music ministers of Holy Name
Cathedral.
Other works were composed in his honor such as Christo Gloria in
Ecclesia by Rev. Edward McKenna, Priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago.
The tle was the mo o taken by Cardinal George.
A chorister during his youth, Cardinal George was fond of choral music. It
is fi ng that the music related to this Sunday’s readings and theme
include Christ as our Shepherd.

April 26, 2015: 4th Sunday of Easter
I Know You.
Traditionally, the Fourth Sunday
of Easter is also called Good
Shepherd Sunday. Christ tells us
in today’s Gospel from John, “I am
the good shepherd, and I know
mine and mine know me.” The
image of Christ as the shepherd is
one of the oldest in the Church.
Even in the Catacombs there is
an ancient drawing of Christ
carrying a sheep on his shoulders.
Sometimes it is difficult for us to view ourselves as
sheep. There is something passive and reliant in
that image which may bother our sense of
independence. However, if we are honest with
ourselves, we know that we need the Lord’s help
and guidance. An essential part of living a
stewardship way of life is placing our lives in the
hands of our Good Shepherd nonetheless.
Throughout this Easter Season we celebrate that
one mystery — that Christ gave His life for us on
the Cross. If we accept the fact that He is our
Savior and that He is our Shepherd, we are better
able to serve as shepherds to one another.
Stewardship is a life of giving self, a life of selfgiving. We must constantly work to live up to the
Lord’s expectations of us, but we also must always
know that He is our shepherd, our Good Shepherd,
and
He
is
always
there
for
us.
