WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/HOLYNAMECHICAGO WWW.TWITTER.COM/HOLYNAMECHICAGO November 16, 2014 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Archbishop th Blase J. Cupich 9 Archbishop of Chicago At the name of Jesus, every knee should bend of those in Heaven and on earth and under the earth. Philippians 2:10 AN HISTORIC WEEK Since it was announced that Blase Cupich would be the next Archbishop of Chicago, an often-posed question has been, “When will he become a Cardinal?” No one knows when or if such an announcement will be made. The answer leads us to try to understand what those titles mean. A Cardinal is a member of the Roman clergy. As Cardinal George often has explained, he is a Cardinal not because he is the Archbishop of Chicago; he is a Cardinal because he is the pastor of San Bartolomeo all’Isola in Rome. There is another priest who actually leads that parish; yet the true pastor is Cardinal George. Six of Chicago’s Archbishops have been given the title Cardinal in our history. Because of the schedule of installation ceremonies this week, the 12:10pm Mass on Tuesday, November 18, has been canceled. The Mass intention was moved to another date. The 5:15pm Masses on both Monday and Tuesday this week will be celebrated in the Chapel with access only through the chapel door at mid-block on Superior between Wabash and State. For security reasons, you will not be able to get to the chapel by cutting through the Cathedral. Finally, for security purposes, the Cathedral will be locked after 12:10pm Mass Before we go into history any further, understand the terms diocese and Monday and after 8:00am Mass Tuesday. archdiocese. A diocese is a geographic area governed by a bishop, a ____________________________ successor of the apostles. There are 194 dioceses in the United States. Of those, 32 are termed an archdiocese. An archdiocese is a diocese I apologize for not letting you know earlier that we cannot use the under the care of an archbishop and is named because of its size or courtyard/north door to the Cathedral this Sunday, November 16. historic importance. When the diocese of Chicago was founded in Crews will be constructing a tent over the courtyard which will serve as a reception area following the ceremonies on Monday, Tuesday, and 1844, it consisted of the whole State of Illinois. Since then, five other Wednesday. Next weekend, we get our courtyard and courtyard door dioceses have been shaved off – Rockford, Joliet, Peoria, Springfield, and Belleville. Chicago was elevated to the status of an archdiocese in back. 1880. Today the Archdiocese of Chicago geographically consists of __________________________ just Cook and Lake Counties. The installation Mass will be broadcast live on all the local Chicago TV stations plus EWTN. __________________________ Returning to Chicago’s Archbishops, the first two, Patrick Feehan (1880-1902) and James Quigley (1903-1915), never were Cardinals. “You mean you can be an archbishop and never be named a Cardinal?” Not only is the answer “yes”; but also true is that, as of this Tuesday, As in the past, there will be an inter-faith pre-Thanksgiving Prayer Service, this year on Tuesday, November 25, at 7:30pm at the Chicago just 4 of the 32 American archbishops not yet retired and still running Sinai Temple, 11 W. The Fourth Church’s new pastor, Shannon Kerschner is scheduled to preach; I am looking forward to hearing her during the Philadelphia, Cardinal Mahoney of Los Angeles, Cardinal Maida of Detroit, Cardinal Egan of New York?” All of them and more are 40 minutes of thankful prayer uniting the faiths of our Gold Coast neighborhood. The Cathedral’s music ministry will handle the music. retired. The largest archdiocese in the United States, Los Angeles, is governed by Archbishop Jose Gomez, not a Cardinal (yet). Please join us at Sinai on Tuesday of Thanksgiving week. ___________________________ This weekend we pass a second basket for donations to the “Parish Assistance Fund.” That fund allows Holy Name to help registered parishioners, regular Cathedral worshippers who find themselves caught short. A committee of the Finance Council directed by me decides each appeal to the fund on a case by case basis. We have provided a temporary supply of food for a family, a turkey or two at Thanksgiving, money for an emergency medical prescription, payment on overdue rent, bed clothes, and even a bed for a parishioner without one. The fund is not meant to solve all problems. We do not pay tuition; we do not buy textbooks; we do not pay for fraternity memberships. Never do we give cash directly to the one who requests. The standards insist that the fund is for a genuine parishioner in need of fundamental necessities. To those who built up that fund in this weekend’s second collection, thank you for a basic work of charity. _____________________________ Next weekend we will pass a second basket for a national cause, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). This effort organized by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops works to defend human dignity and take poverty off the map. Local programs supported by CCHD have changed neighborhoods across America. The goal is to assist already existing, local social service programs that train the poor to help themselves. CCHD aims to give a helping hand to 46-million Americans. Whatever Chicago Catholics contribute next weekend (all Chicago parishes participate annually), the bishops promise that 25% will remain in Chicago, assisting local programs already operating. For more information, go to www.povertyusa.org . ___________________________ It is interesting to study each of the six Cardinals of Chicago and how long after taking possession of the cathedra it was before each was called to the college of Cardinals. George Mundelein was installed in February, 1916; he became the first Cardinal west of the Allegheny Mountains 8 years later. His successor, Samuel Stritch, was Archbishop 6 years before becoming a Cardinal in 1946. Albert Meyer was archbishop just over a year before joining the ranks of Cardinals in 1959. John Cody was installed in August, 1965; he received his red hat in May, 1967. The quickest naming of a Chicago archbishop to the rank of Cardinal was Joseph Bernardin who was appointed on February 2, 1983, just 161 days after his installation. Cardinal George also became a Cardinal in less than a year after becoming archbishop of Chicago. We should pray for those who led Chicago’s Catholics in the past. Above all, we should pray for Archbishop Cupich. ______________________________ Beware of Mickey Mouse! Next Saturday, November 22, the annual pre-Christmas Michigan Avenue parade culminating in the lighting of the Magnificent Mile’s trees with a wave of Mickey’s wand will take place from 5:30-7:00pm. An attempt to get to or from Holy Name from Streeterville (east of Michigan Avenue) will be impossible except for the pedestrian underpasses at Oak Street Beach and at Grand Avenue. My advice? Ch. Walker The Cathedral Filipino Network invites you to our annual Simbang Gabi celebration on Monday, December 15 at 7pm in the Cathedral. Simbang Gabi literally means “Mass in the Dark”, traditionally taking place at dawn before the cock crows. There are two symbols associated with Simbang Gabi. The Belen is the nativity set introduced by St. Francis Assisi in 1223. The Belen is found in churches and affluent homes; however the Parol is everywhere. The Parol is a lantern, representing the Star of Bethlehem. It is set in the windows to serve as a guiding light, and a sign for Mary, Joseph and Jesus that they are welcome in this home. Our pastor will be our presider and homilist. Our Cathedral Filipino Singers will lead us in song. Also, a reception will follow in the cafeteria. O God, you search me and you know me. All my thoughts lie open to your gaze. When I walk or lie down you are before me: Ever the maker and keeper of my days. You know my resting and my rising. You discern my purpose from afar, and with love everlasting you besiege me: In every moment of life or death, you are. Before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you have known its meaning through and through. You are with me beyond my understanding: God of my present, my past and future, too. Although your spirit is upon me, still I search for shelter from your light. There is nowhere on earth I can escape you: even the darkness is radiant in your sight. For you created me and shaped me, gave me life within my mother’s womb. For the wonder of who I am, I praise you: safe in your hands all creation is made new. Choral Anthem – Sunday 9:30 & 11:00 a.m. Masses – 11/16/14 Strengthen for Service Richard Proulx Strengthen for service, O Lord, hands that holy things have taken; and let ears that heard your most holy word to lesser things never awaken. Lord, may tongues which “Holy “ sang be free from all deceiving, may eyes which saw your love be bright, heav’nly hope perceiving; and may feet that walked along hallowed courts from your true light never be banished. May bodies by your Body fed be with your new life replenished. Amen. As one parishioner said, “I have never had a matching set of four for 4 people in my entire life!” So if you have any extra not-to-be-used green stamps throughout these next few months, please consider dropping them off in the collection or at the rectory to the attention of Fr.
