Third Sunday of Lent
Dear Parishioners:
For the next three weeks, we use the “A” readings because of the RCIA
rituals or scrutinies. As we approach Easter, we pray more intensely for
the elect and the candidates for full communion. These men and women are taking a
big step in their lives. The “A” readings from the gospel of John center around three
stories: the Samaritan woman at the well, the man blind from birth, and the raising of
Lazarus from the dead.
In orthodox Jewish society, men did not talk to women. Sad to say, women had an
inferior role; and Jews did not talk with Samaritans. Jesus treats the Samaritan woman
as an equal, and promises her eternal life, even though she has had five husbands, and
the current man she was with was not her husband. One of the reasons that I am drawn
to the gospel is the compassion and understanding of Jesus towards the Samaritan
woman, who has been divorced.
Throughout my priestly ministry, I have always been concerned about the plight of the
divorced. In my own family, my mother had been divorced before my sister and I
were born; and two of my brothers experienced divorce. Divorce is a painful process
because it marks the end of a relationship. Sometimes divorces can be very bitter and
the usual casualties are the children of the marriage because they are pulled between
the parents. In the past the Church was very condemning of divorced people and
refused them communion if they remarried. Divorced people were treated as second
class citizens.
When someone goes through divorce, we often times do not know what to say. Do
you side with one person or the other? Do you avoid them? Do you offer your condolences? Sometimes I compare a divorce to the death of a loved one. When someone
dies, you reach out to them and offer your condolences. You may take food to the
house; you have someone over for dinner. We take these actions out of compassion.
We need to do the same for the divorced. After you have invested years into a relationship, it is difficult to adjust your life and make other connections.
Over the years, I have spent a great deal of time with divorced people trying to help
them to understand their situation and go on to new relationships. Pope Francis
strongly encourages us to reach out to the divorced and help them in the transition.
Never condemn a divorced person; help them to go on to a new stage of their life.

STAFF RETIREMENTS
Eileen Niven, pastoral associate for outreach, will retire in June after 41 years working
on the staff; and Chris Stratton, my executive assistant, will also retire at the end of
June after 13 years on staff. Both have contributed a great deal to the life of the parish
and have worked very hard serving the people of this community. The parish will
begin a job search soon to replace both people.

This Week’s Stewardship Note—Today is the Third Sunday in Lent.
The woman said to him,
“I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the
Christ;
when he comes, he will tell us everything.”
Jesus said to her,

contemplative prayer on every-other Tuesday at 9AM and
6:30PM. Next session is March 17th. People new to the
experience are finding it overwhelmingly beautiful.
In the synoptic gospels, Jesus is constantly telling unclean
spirits or his own disciples to tell no one that he is the Christ.
In John, Jesus declares it to a sinful Samaritan woman whom
he approaches as she is drawing water from a well. His disciples are scandalized.
Many people whose social security numbers were stolen
in last year’s national tax fraud are finding that the IRS
has done nothing to try to identify fraudulent tax refund
claims. To simplify your life it is advisable to file your
taxes early before the bad guys do, whether you were victimized last year or not.
In the prior chapter, Nicodemus, a Pharisee and “leader of the
Jews”, a respectable man, steals in to see Jesus at night. Jesus
tells him that he must be born of water and the Spirit. Nicodemus does not understand to the point of exasperating Jesus.
In contrast, Jesus comes to the Samaritan woman in the middle of the day. He knows she is a sinner and details her sins
for her. She is overwhelmed by his forgiveness, and he ends
up staying in her village for two days because they are receptive to his teaching.
As Pope Francis is constantly reminding us, the Church
Fathers long ago agreed that the Church is a community of
sinners, not of saints. I doubt that many of us have sins to
match those of the Samaritan woman. Jesus forgives anyone
who comes to him with an open heart.
At the Easter Vigil, nine catechumens will be born of water
and the Spirit. Please come and rejoice with them.
Many activities are scheduled in Lent to deepen your experience of the season. Every Wednesday night at 6PM is Soup
Night. You are invited to donate the money you saved with
this simple meal to Rice Bowl. The first two Fish Fridays
were wonderful community meals. They resume on March
13th, 20th and 27th. Come out and support the Youth and
Young Adult Program and enjoy a wonderful Lenten dinner
as well! Finally, Deacon Ray has begun teaching
The St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon is coming up this

IP PIN to protect yourself, you can visit the IRS’s Get An
IP PIN on its website. The process may take time, and
because these IP PINs are in high demand, may not result
in your timely receipt of an IP PIN. If you file early, and
then subsequently receive an IP PIN, you may be required

ADULT FAITH FORMATION: I saw two studies that the average person checks their smart device 110 times a day in
one study and 150 times a day in the other study. No wonder people are distracted! Those in the Pray Always Group who
are learning to rest in God in contemplative prayer are finding it the greatest thing since sliced bread. It is, after all, a natural outgrowth of our baptism and what we’ll do forever in God’s city. Join us Tuesday, March 17th at 9AM or 6:30PM to
learn more.
The Bible study on Matthew’s Gospel concludes on March 19th, also at 9AM and 6:30PM with Session #23. Then we
break for Easter. We’ll begin a study of the Psalms, the school of prayer on April 9th. If you missed Matthew think about
getting into the Bible study groove with the Psalms. More information on the Psalms study will follow.
We still need couples to volunteer as marriage mentor couples. If you’re in a happy marriage and were to volunteer, your
help would be appreciated. The mentoring workbooks and video are excellent and easy to use. Plus, I’ll see that you have
a good orientation to the process so you can feel confident when you work with a couple. If you feel called in your heart

Daily Prayer This Week
This is a pivotal week of Lent. We can solidify the
patterns we have begun or we can make a new start,
if we haven't been able to get started yet. If we have
begun to recognize what needs realigning in our lives
and have begun to fast and abstain from some things
that get in the way of our relationship with the Lord,
then we are engaging in a struggle. We are likely uncovering resistance and experiencing our personal
sinfulness face-to-face.
This is all preparing us for a deeper conversion, a
readiness for reconciliation with God and the graces
that will allow us to be a source of reconciliation with
others. This is the time when we begin to see and
experience how much God loves us at a new and
more personal level. These graces prepare us to keep
our eyes focused on Jesus in the weeks ahead - to
learn from him, to fall in love with him more deeply
and to be drawn to imitate him more completely. If
we are just getting started with our Lenten journey,
renewing our desires for these graces will be all we
need to begin with a renewed openness. God does not
need a lot of time to convince us of his love for us.
This is a week about God's love for us and our call to
love others the same way. It is a week to keep our
daily focus on naming a desire each morning. The
day ahead will shape what we ask for as our feet hit
the floor in the morning. Pausing to thank the Lord
for this day and to ask for the grace to let our mind
and heart be renewed in the concrete circumstances,
relationships and obligations of our day. Throughout
the day, we can then return to those desires in background of our awareness. Our request for the Lord's
help is always there and our consciousness of it will
help us make the choice we desire to make, to let go
of what we need to let go of, to add what we need to
add. This will take us deeper and deeper into selfawareness and a sense of our need for a Savior, who
is right there to embrace us and give us the graces we
ask for.

Youth and Young Adult Ministry
Dear Parishioners,
Our Youth and Young Adult Website is updated! Please refer to it for information regarding many ministry opportunities for 7th and 8th graders, high school students (including Confirmation preparation) and young adults.
Life Nights for High School Teens...Sundays 7-8:30PM.
This is our flagship (but not our only) program for high school teens. These “Life Nights” include
time for getting to know Catholic teens in the area, prayer, great catechesis, fun, snacks, a social
and service component. We meet each Sunday night except for certain holiday weekends. A full
calendar is published online on our parish website.
Open Gym time has changed to 8:30-9:30PM to make time for our Life Nights (7-8:30PM). This time will continue
each Sunday through May 2015 (with exceptions as noted on the website).
High school teens are also encouraged to be members of our “Peer Team” a peer leader for our high school group
or a “Core Team” member for our 7th and 8th grade group. This is a great way to do active youth oriented service for our
parish! And, as I am sure you are aware, this kind of leadership involvement is a real plus for college and job applications.
World Youth Day is on!!! We’re going to Krakow, Poland in July 2016 for an amazing experience!!! We will travel with the Archdiocese of Seattle! A link to their website including itinerary and cost is on our website. Contact me

WOMEN’S GROUP—MANY THANKS! The Women’s Group recently purchased new furniture for the nursery
in the church. The nursery is a multi-purpose room. On Sundays, the room is used as a nursery. Sometimes people
wait there until a funeral begins, or for a wedding ceremony, people can wait there until the celebration begins.

St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank: This
week the SVDP food bank needs the following items: macaroni and cheese, jam,
pancake syrup, canned pineapple, microwave popcorn, and paper towels. Thank

A Psychologist is available to treat concerns such as
depression, anxiety, grief and loss, and family problems.
This service is offered for adults and children of the

LENTEN SOUP NIGHTS are on
Wednesday evenings during Lent, this

Calling All Bunnies!!!
It is time for one of Holy Rosary’s favorite giving traditions – the
Easter Basket Project. Every year, with the support of our parish, we assemble about 800 baskets for
children in need. These are children who would likely go without if it weren’t for Holy Rosary.
The organizations that receive baskets are those that service the poor, homeless and low income families.
We make very efficient use of your donations of goods and cash. The goods we are in need of this year
are individually wrapped, nut free candies and small chocolate bunnies. There is a donation box in the
church vestibule. Please bring in your donations by Sunday, March 15th.
The cash donations are used in a way which gives us buying power to purchase the items in bulk directly from the manufacturers, for a substantial cost-savings. If you wish to donate cash please send it to the office or drop it in the collection basket. Be sure to mark it clearly for: EASTER BASKET PROJECT. This project couldn’t exist without you!

SACRAMENTAL INFORMATION
INFANT BAPTISM - Parents attend two sessions to prepare to celebrate this sacrament. We encourage parents to
attend before the birth or adoption of their child. Baptisms are normally celebrated at a weekend liturgy on the
first weekend of the month. Next preparation sessions are on Monday evenings, April 20th and 27th, 2015,
7-8:30PM in the Parish Office. The next baptisms are on April 5th (Easter) at 11AM (no baptisms during Lent),
May 3rd at 11AM, and June 6th at 5PM. Please call the Parish Office to register.
MARRIAGE - Couples wishing to celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage should contact the parish at least 6
months prior to the desired date. Preparation for celebrating and living the sacrament is required.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK - is celebrated any time there is a serious illness or health crisis. Contact the parish
office to make arrangements. The sacrament is also celebrated periodically at a Sunday liturgy and on weekdays.
FUNERALS - Please contact the parish after a death, and before making arrangements with a funeral home.
CONFIRMATION - The Sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated yearly for those who are high school juniors or
seniors. Attendance at preparation sessions is required.
Adults who have not been confirmed may also celebrate the sacrament. Contact the Parish Office for
information about preparation.
FIRST RECONCILIATION/FIRST EUCHARIST - Children are prepared for these sacraments after completing a
year of remote preparation in either the school or religious education program. Parents attend preparation
sessions for each sacrament.
ADULT INITIATION - Adults who wish to join the Catholic Faith participate in sessions of the Rite of Christian
Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) Contact the parish for further information.
