Dear Members,
Happy New Year to you all. I trust that you had an enjoyable time with family and friends over Christmas, and have been able to enjoy the outdoors
and fine weather, rather than sit indoors over a computer or laptop. I hope
that you are ready to face the challenges of a new year with gusto. As I reflect on the latter part of last year I would express thanks on your behalf to
Betty and Denise for their organisation of a very successful end of year
luncheon. Thanks to you all for your support.
As we look ahead, our greatest challenge will be keeping up with the constantly changing technology, and the various new things that it can do for
us. While we have a band of dedicated and competent tutors, another challenge is finding tutors who are competent and have the time to devote to
teaching new systems. I am sure that we will continue to rise to the challenge.
We are all grateful to Alan Armstrong and those assisting him in organising
and tutoring the “Summer Drop-In Sessions” which are being held as I
write. With attendance of 21 people at one of the sessions, it demonstrates
the success of this initiative. It is a very good example of “Sharing and Caring” as we all endeavour to help one another.
Our first Wednesday afternoon meeting is the Annual General meeting, on
Wednesday 11th February. Your committee have already given “Notice of
Motion” to deal with a couple of administrative matters concerning the timing of the AGM, and the need to have our accounts audited, now that they
are monitored by the Charities Commission. These issues will be expanded on at the AGM and discussed.
I am pleased to note that all but one of the Executive Committee have indicated a willingness to stand for re-election at the AGM. Pauleen Wilkinson
has asked to step back a step from the action, and will not be seeking reelection. Pauleen has been a tower of strength to the committee in her
Public Relations role and the organising of speakers for our Wednesday
meetings. Thank you Pauleen, we look forward to your continued involvement with us.
Nomination forms for membership of the Executive Committee can be
found elsewhere in this Newsletter. I would encourage you to consider this
rewarding role.
I look forward to your continued input and support of SeniorNet in 2015.

I've been re-reading a newsletter column I wrote five years ago on computer
security and not much has changed.
Commonsense precautions still come first. If strangers send you email it
won’t be for your benefit. Emails are always safe to inspect in the preview pane
and safe to delete but might not be safe to open. Don’t click links unless you
know they’re safe and don’t reply because that says your email address is valid.
What IS different five years later is that tablets, iPads and smartphones have full protection
built in that takes care of everything so your only concern is being prudent about what you share
on-line and with whom.
Windows computers still require you to set up extra protection. Three components - a
firewall, an anti-virus program and a spyware scanner. Those functions don't fit well together so
they're separate installations. A firewall filters inward and outward Internet traffic, but like a
wharf gatekeeper it doesn't look at content - just checks the sender of each packet of data.
Windows 7 or 8 have firewalls that are excellent when they're properly set up, but XP users need
to install software like Zone Alarm or Kerio. There's a full explanation on our website.
Viruses have become rarer as most computers are now fully protected (just like mass
vaccination eradicates infectious diseases) but you still need an anti-virus program. All are good
but AVG Free is the most popular and you don't need to update to its paid version.
Spyware is still common, often programs that sneak in when you install some freebie. They
hide in your computer, monitor everything and send information back to their owners. They
range from nuisances like programs that watch your internet browsing then target you with ads,
to the really nasty that capture every keystroke including your bank login so evil-doers can watch
your account for the best time to rob it. The symptoms aren't obvious (commonest: computer
doing things when it shouldn't, but legitimate updates also do that) so might not be noticed for
some time. Public computers are always risky because you don't know if their network is
protected or what the last user left behind to watch you.
Whatever protection you install, always download its latest updates before you do a scan.
The threat you most need to worry about is the brand new one because without protection it can
spread round the world in less than a day.
Hoax warnings of all kinds are still common and there's a website listing them at http://
www.hoax-slayer.com/
The threat that's still fairly new is DoS (Denial of Service) attacks. They're mostly aimed at
ISPs and websites, and they trigger millions of hacked computers to contact the same site at the
same time and cause it to crash. Because that requires considerable organizing individuals are
only targeted if they're on someone's hit list. There's a good Wikipedia article at http://

Watties dating system...
How old is this can of Peaches?
This is a question I have often asked myself when sorting tins out—in
the cupboard
A tin of fruit salad led me to phone Watties. Instead of firm pieces of
fruit—I thought that the pieces looked a bit mushy
I was asked to read out the numbers on the bottom of the tin; oh dear…
bit of a shock to hear the can was three years old!
It was explained… The first three numbers, tell what’s in the tin. Next
four numbers tell the day and month it was processed—with the fourth
number being the year
