Pendleton’s life was cut short, January 29, 2013, when shots were fired into a group of King College Preparatory students taking cover from the rain in Kenwood’s Harsh Park on Oakenwald Avenue. The bullet that struck Pendleton came from the gun of Micheail Ward, who claimed to have mistaken the group of teenagers for rival gang members. Everytown for Gun Safety, an organization that advocates for stricter gun policies, hosted the event at the park, which sits on the northeast corner of the intersection of Hyde Park Boulevard and 53rd Street, alongside Project Orange Tree, a student-run organization that aims to raise awareness on issues of structural violence. The program, which spanned the afternoon, included poems and songs from current King College Preparatory students and speeches from Pendleton’s friends and family, as well as Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “Hadiya was one of the most amazing ladies I’ve ever met in my whole life,” said classmate NzaAri Khepra to a crowd of orangeclad onlookers. Khepra, a founding member of Project Orange Tree and close friend of Pendleton, wasted no time in reminding those in attendance that gun violence in America takes 88 lives per day. Pendleton’s commemoration follows a month in which Chicago saw the deaths of 36 people due to gun violence. More than 300 people sustained gun shot wounds during the month of May. Fighting through tears, Pendleton’s mother, Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton, wondered aloud what the day might have held had her daughter still been alive. “[Hadiya] would have been excited about going to college and all the drama that comes with that,” Cowley-Pendleton said, eliciting both tears and laughter from the audience. At approximately 5 p.m. on June 3, students and South Side activists staged a sit-in at the University of Chicago’s main administration building, 5801 S. Ellis Ave. Representatives from Students for Health Equity and Fearless Leading by the Youth (FLY) led a rally outside of the administration building while a group of nine activists, composed in part of University of Chicago alumni, barricaded themselves in the building’s main lobby, using bicycle locks to secure the doors. The sit-in, which received robust media attention, is part of an ongoing effort by South Side activists to bring an adult trauma center to the University of Chicago. Turner was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he later died. It was a full house, as people mingled and passed out business cards at Citibank University of Chicago Campus branch, 5820 S. Ellis Ave. Wallace Goode Jr., the executive director of the Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce, said Third Thursday is a great opportunity for residents and local business owners to learn more about the resources in their neighborhood. Kiela Smith-Upton, a Legal Shield associate, shared information to the attendees on how to apply for Request for Proposals (RFPs) and how to secure business contracts. Legal Shield connects small businesses and consumers with law firms for legal protection and legal advice. Smith-Upton addressed securing contracts in the Special Service Area, which uses targeted taxes for business improvements. Targeted taxes are funds set by the local municipality and managed by local businesses for funding services. Service contracts can include hiring local businesses to clean windows, sidewalks, marketing and other upkeep that helps improve the quality of the corridor. An example of one of these projects was the dog park built in Nichols Park on East 53rd Street. The Citibank Branch-University of Chicago announced at Third Thursday that it will be having mortgage lending workshops for real estate professionals over the summer. These workshops are geared to better equip real estate professionals with lending practices and provide resources for broker-client interaction during real property sales transactions. The Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce will be having a Third Wednesday Business Briefing at A-10 restaurant on June 17, which will be another opportunity for local professionals and business owners to network and learn about enterprise resources. The sit-in coincided with Alumni Weekend, a time in which the University of Chicago looks to increase its endowment through alumni donations. “We don’t think the usual channels that the University of Chicago makes its profit from should continue to function as usual,” said Helena Bassett, a representative of Students for Health Equity. The Chicago Fire Department and the Chicago Police Department were called in by University of Chicago officials and arrived at the scene of the sit-in at approximately 6:30 p.m. “[T]he protesters’ actions endangered people who work in the building,” said University of Chicago spokesperson Jeremy Manier. Manier said that protesters blocked access to the only two elevators in the sixstory building, the fire panel and one of two emergency fire exits. He also explained that protestors’ locked the only door leading to a first floor suite of offices, forcing workers inside to exit through a back emergency exit. In a written statement, Manier stated, “As a result of these safety concerns, the University called the Chicago Police Department and the Chicago Fire Department, which sent a fire ladder truck and firefighters to restore access to the building and the fire alarm panel. Nine protesters who had blocked the entrance were then arrested by the University of Chicago Police Department and charged with criminal trespass, mob action, and resisting or obstructing a peace officer.” All nine protesters arrested were kept in custody through the night. They were released the next day and given a court date of June 18. The DuSable Museum of African American History is pleased to present the 2015 edition of the Chicago Park District’s “Movies In The Parks” beginning Saturday, June 20, and ending on Saturday, August 15. When asked about the blocking of one of the building’s emergency fire exits, Garcia- Duarte responded that she was “completely unaware of fire exits that were blocked.” As a member of the crowd outside, GarciaDuarte acknowledged that she could not speak for any of the protestors inside of the administration building, but claimed, “It was not communicated to the outside crowd that the protesters were a fire hazard.” In addition, she stated that there were multiple exits for staff still working and that a wheelchair ramp existed at the emergency fire exit at the back of the building. Ellis Ave. Sara Ray Stoelinga, the Sara Liston Spurlark Director of the Urban Education Institute, has won the University of Chicago’s Quantrell Award. The award is given annually to faculty members for outstanding teaching at the college and is considered the school’s most prestigious undergraduate teaching award. As the Sara Liston Spurlark Director of UEI—an institute with nearly 500 employees and a $50 million operating budget—Stoelinga oversees the development of teachers, rigorous applied research, the operation of school campuses and the distribution of models and systems to improve schools nationally. This spring Stoelinga, who is an alumna of the College and a PhD graduate of the university’s sociology department, also taught one of the university’s first massive open online courses, a free MOOC focused on the history of American education reform and policy for participants from around the globe. Grants awarded to arts and science collaborative projects at University of Chicago, 5801 S. Ellis Ave. The Arts, Science and Culture Initiative awarded grants to five teams comprised of nine University of Chicago graduate students and three School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) graduate students. The two schools formed a partnership earlier this year. Julie Marie Lemon, the program’s director and curator, said the goal of providing these collaborative grants is “to test the idea that different domains of knowing and knowledge — arts, science and culture — can enrich and influence each discipline’s particular questions, tools, methodologies and specific curiosities.” One of the projects was “The Fabric of the Universe” created by Isaac Facio, a master of fine arts candidate in fiber and material studies at SIAC, and Benedikt Diemer, a U. of C. Ph.D. candidate in astrophysics. This project used computer simulations of dark matter and translated them into a more tangible form using threedimensional textiles, resulting in a new way of visualizing the structure of the universe. “The Fabric of the Universe” was awarded a grant from TextielLab, part of the TextielMuseum, in Tilburg, The Netherlands, to produce the fabric. Another project, “Syntax & Songbirds” was created by Geoff Brookshire, a Ph.D. candidate in psychology; Kyler Brown, a Ph.D. candidate in computational neuroscience, and Marcelle Pierson, a Ph.D. candidate in music history and theory. This grouping of student expertise led to a musical creation with classical instruments constrained by the biological and cognitive systems associated with birdsong. “It’s not classical instruments playing birdsong, it’s synthetic birds playing classical music,” Brown said. “We use the ‘sounds’ of the bird, not the ‘song.’” Their efforts resulted in a full-length musical composition, which was played and recorded in its entirety in May during a free, public event from at the Logan Center. Spencer Bibbs 3 4 Hyde Park Herald, June 10, 2015 Thanks to all who helped out Bret Harte To the Editor: We would like to publicly thank all of the community members who supported the Bret Harte 8th graders as we traveled to Washington, D.C., this spring. This is the first year that Bret Harte has had an 8th grade due to the school actions in the last few years and the administration and staff wanted to be sure that they had every opportunity to experience the 8th grade activities that many students do at this time in their lives. Our trip to Washington, D.C., was a huge success. We were able to take 27 students on the trip and five adults. We flew out of Midway Airport and spent three days there, touring all day long, taking in all of the memorials and museums. It was a packed trip and the students all gave it favorable reviews. For many, it was their first time flying. We did a lot of fundraising to make this trip happen. We appreciate all of the community members who had their cars washed, bought raffle tickets, came to our Silent Auction/Raffle Event at Woodlawn Tap, bought chocolate bars and taffy apples, or donated through our Donorschoose Project site online. Without the generosity of those who helped through these efforts, and the parents who volunteered their time for each of these, we would not have been successful. This trip was such a formative moment in these students’ lives. The students talk about the impact the Vietnam Memorial had on them or how they didn’t realize so many soldiers had lost their lives while we were touring Arlington National Cemetery. Our tour guide was great and one student came back reciting the one thing he wanted them to take away from his time with them - that freedom is not free. We expected them to take in the sites, learn to be respectful (they were so, so reverent at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier), have fun walking around together, but we didn’t realize the way they would internalize the trip as a whole and what all those memorials together represent. Many of them said they want to return to D.C. at some point and revisit places that we just didn’t have enough time to take in fully. We are already laying the ground work for next year’s trip. We are tired, but all who participated (students and educators) have been changed by this experience. We look forward to making these events, specifically the Silent Auction/Raffle Event, an annual opportunity to bring the outside community together with the Bret Harte school community. We thank you with warm hearts for your support for our students and neighborhood school. A car driving at high speed veered off the inner drive, jumped the curb, narrowly missed a light pole and then crashed directly into a large tree. Part of the front of the car wrapped itself around the tree during the impact, the hood was doubled over and smashed into the windshield, the front wheels were knocked out of position and parts of the battery were thrown some 50 feet. Both occupants of the vehicle died in the accident. As I looked at the awful wreckage in which the bodies still remained, I couldn’t help thinking about what might have happened if they had hit the street light instead, and it had given way. Might they have survived? Probably not, because there is still no trauma center at the nearby University of Chicago Medical Center, and ambulances would likely have had to take them to Northwestern Memorial Hospital on the near North Side, which would have taken much longer at a very critical Friendly faces at the fair Above: Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle (center) strolls through the 57th Street Art Fair Sunday. Right: Briana Harris shows off her face paint and her lunch during the art fair. Owen M. Lawson III Why we put brakes on police info law To the Editor: We heard from the community at town hall meetings. We heard from people who phoned and visited our offices. We were button-holed by friends and neighbors as we walked down the street. The concern? The breadth and extent of University of Chicago Police Department authority: how big is the UCPD area? And what are its powers? The university has police powers well beyond the campus boundaries, from 37th to 64th streets. Their police powers are identical to those available to municipal and public university police departments. Most in the community are happy to have the UCPD presence — extra pairs of eyes, extra hands on deck help to keep us safe and secure. But many want to know more about the operations and practices of Department personnel. Do they make many arrests? What triggers the decision to stop a motorist or pedestrian? The answer to the first question — the arrest question — is that, generally, they don’t make many. Most arrests are handled by the Chicago Police Department, often alerted to a problem by members of the UCPD. But private campus police operations and practices? No clear answers. When private university police agencies have police powers identical to those of their public counterparts, we believe those private forces should meet the same standards of accountability and transparency that apply to their public counterparts. We introduced House Bill 3932 in order to shed public light on private university police practices. We worked closely with our own university, with the Illinois Attorney General’s office and with open information advocates across the state. We made great progress. But some disagreements surfaced in the final hours of our spring legislative session. We didn’t call the measure for a final vote. In the meantime, we are grateful that the university itself, having met with community advocates, recently decided to make available to the public more information about its activities. But a decision by one administration can be undone by the next; as well, the information the university has voluntarily offered to disseminate is not as extensive as is today required of municipal police forces. We will continue to work over the summer to find common ground on the legislation. In our effort, it will be important to balance the public’s right to know against the privacy interests of those who interact with a private higher education institution. Our goal is to provide greater transparency for the public on private university police activities in the state of Illinois. State Rep. Barbara Flynn Currie (D-25) State Rep. We need jobs, mental institutions, facilities.” “Police abuse and street violence are not separate issues,” said Jamie Kalven, founder of The Invisible Institute, a Hyde Park organization working to facilitate conversations around police misconduct. Kalven said the conversation about street violence is often incomplete. “The piece they don’t address is the interaction between street violence and police violence,” said Kalven. “These are neighborhoods that suffer abandonment by public and private institutions.” This abandonment, claimed Kalven, is imperative in understanding the gang violence that led to Pendleton’s death. Ellis Ave. When: through June 21 Tickets: $45-$65 Phone: 773-753-4472 By ANNE SPISELMAN Theater Critic T he Secret Garden” has never been one of my favorite shows. Marsha Norman (book and lyrics) and Lucy Simon’s (music) 1991 musical based on Frances Hodgson Burnett’s 1911 children’s novel has always struck me as a little formulaic, with characters who aren’t all that engaging. While a few of the songs are haunting or inspiring — “I Heard Someone Crying,” “Hold On” — Congratulations to the 2015 Graduates of Hyde Park! State Representative Barbara Flynn-Currie they only work in context, and others are rather pedestrian. But Court Theatre’s production is an eyeopener. Scaled down beautifully for the intimate space by director Charles Newell and music director Doug Peck, whose new orchestrations for the six-musician ensemble are outstanding, it highlights the emotional complexity and darker shadings of a story that essentially is about death and rebirth, or how to find a reason for living after a terrible loss. At its center is Mary Lennox (Tori Whaples), a 10 year old raised in colonial India who is shipped off to the North Yorkshire manor of her only living relative, her uncle Archibald Craven (Rob Lindley), when her parents and beloved nanny die of cholera. Basically ignored by her uncle and terribly lonely, she takes comfort in the discovery of the titular garden, which belonged to her Aunt Lily (Jennie Sophia) but has been closed off and become overgrown with weeds since her death in childbirth a decade earlier. Archibald, still grieving the loss of his wife, travels often and can barely stand to be around his son, Colin (Trent Noor), an apparent invalid he fears will die soon. Instead, he’s left the boy in the care of Dr. Neville Craven (Jeff Parker), who envies his brother and wants to inherit the estate himself. With some help from the manor staff — the maid Martha (Elizabeth Ledo), her natureloving brother Dickon (Aubrey McGrath), the gardner Ben (James Earl Jones II) - and a talkative robin (flautist Suzanne Gillen) Mary finds the key and door to the garden and, though despairing at first of its moribund condition, sets about reviving it. May you have continued success in your future endeavors! Friends of Kwame Raoul ayso She also finds Colin, who has been kept hidden away, and coaxes him back to health, despite the machinations of Dr. Craven, who’s determined to send her to boarding school over her strenuous objections. Newell’s way of bringing the garden to life at the end is apt to raise some eyebrows. Instead of festooning the stage with greenery and spring flowers, he has a whole load of blush-colored petals (they’re supposed to be rose petals, I think) dumped from above. The first impression is breath-taking; the second, a realization that petals are dead or dying. But I suspect that’s the point: Everything is ephemeral, and we should appreciate it while it lasts and not try to hang on too long to what’s lost. In Court’s “The Secret Garden,” the ghosts don’t hang around to watch over the living once they’ve learned to love each other. To The Graduates of Bret Harte School, William Ray School, Kozminski Community Academy, Canter Leadership Academy, Murray Language Academy and Kenwood Academy High School, Congratulations on your Graduation! You should be so proud of your accomplishments. It is now time to embark on a new chapter in your life. I have full confidence that you will succeed in all your future endeavors! Alderman Leslie A. Hyde Park Blvd., Chicago, IL 60615 [email protected] June 10, 2015, Hyde Park Herald Two successful seasons brought to a close in Hyde Park By M.L. RANTALA Classical Music Critic W hen you can see summer coming without resort to squinting, you also know that the music season is coming to a close. Two performing groups with strong Hyde Park support, Baroque Band and the Chicago Ensemble, have both given their final performances of the 201415 season and both were wonderfully done. Baroque Band closed out their musical year at Augustana Luthern Church on the last Saturday of May with two great works: Handel’s “Water Music” and a piece by Telemann with a similar title: “Wassermusik: Hamburger Ebb und Fluth.” The band sported the largest array of instrumentalists in their young history for this concert, with their ever-glowing strings and harpsichord augmented by flute, oboes, bassoon, horns, trumpet and theorbo. The results were smashing. Conductor and artistic director Garry Clarke drew rousing sound from his ensemble, led with gorgeous playing from concertmaster Joan Plana. The Telemann featured particularly wonderful sound from Leighann Daihl (flute) and spectacular work from Nate Helgeson (bassoon). The great energy of Overture set the stage for the following nine short movements with classical themes and dance settings. The Bourée was Farewell, Andrew frisky, the Gavotte playful, and the Harlequinade furiously fast and engaging. The closing Canarie had Clarke stomping his feet at times for charming percussive effect. Handel’s “Water Music” was similarly effective. It began with Justin Bland and David Kjar offering gleaming trumpet work, pleasingly bright and brassy. The round tone from the flute made the Sarabande particularly lovely. David Walker’s Theorbo added delicate moments. The only blemish on the evening was that while the horns succeeded more often than they failed, they nonetheless struggled noticeably. Clarke effectively drew out the contrasting dark and sunny elements of the music and knew when to make it bounce. There were moments as light as a soufflé. When they reached the most famous music from the suite, it was zing and zest of the best kind. On Sunday, the Chicago Ensemble ended their season at International House with the kind of concert which has made them a success for nearly 40 years: an eclectic selection of music cleverly chosen and well-knitted together, including many rarely-performed works. The ensemble featured soprano Michelle Areyzaga, violinist Olga Dubossarskaya Kaler, flutist Susan Levitin, and — as always — pianist and artistic director, Gerald Rizzer. Areyzaga had many opportunities to shine and she took them firmly in hand. In a 2001 work by American composer Mark Zuckerman — “Ménagerie” — she was an apt story-teller, bringing to life poetry by Robert Desnos which Rizzer noted was beloved by French children. “Le Léopard” was enhanced by Levitin’s flute, which at first merely purred but then offered a dangerous growling sound evoking danger. Areyzaga had the wide-eyed awe of both the detached reciter as well as innocent listening child. There was a sense of quiet night with soft cat feet in the dark forest, hiding and waiting. Similarly, “Le Ver luisant” (The Glow Worm) had nocturnal effectiveness with the instrumentalists creating the twinkle of the stars while the soprano had the fragile quality of the uncertain light of the firefly. Debussy’s Sonata for violin and piano put Kaler’s skill on display. She knew when to create soaring expressiveness and when to rely on sparing sound. She and Rizzer performed with an excellent unity of purpose. Martinu’s Madrigal Sonata was fresh and playful. Areyzaga was sweet and gentle in some selected songs by Poulenc, and committed in the 1923 Suite for soprano and violin by Villa-Lobos, although these songs did not ultimately come off as all that interesting. The closing Deux Interlues by Ibert was notable for its quiet intensity. The program opened with J.S. Bach’s aria, “Herr, deine Güte reich, so weit der Himmel ist,” which found violin and flute not entirely in sync. Are You Hungry? June 10, 2015, Hyde Park Herald 13 14 Hyde Park Herald, June 10, 2015 Vegan cooking entering your home here in Hyde Park By ALEXIS MILLER Staff Writer Paulette Marshall is one of Hyde Park’s small business owners who, with the help of Bonne Sante Health Food Store, 1512 E. 53rd St., has been able to make her dream of selling her vegan product line a reality. Marshall, a native Chicagoan who was raised overseas in Jerusalem, infuses her unique heritage and culinary upbringing into her cooking. Marshall, when she was 8 years old, moved to Jerusalem with her five siblings and mother. Marshall’s mother was suffering from breast cancer and wanted to provide a better life for her children, so she decided to join a small spiritual group of African Americans from Chicago that migrated to Israel in the late 1960’s called the African Hebrew Israelite (A.H.I.) community. Unfortunately, two years after their move to Jerusalem, her mother died from cancer and left Marshall and her siblings orphaned. Before passing away, Marshall’s mother passed along her passion for cooking vegetarian and vegan cuisine. Her mother would often cook savory vegan dishes for the families that would help take care of Marshall and her siblings. Marshall learned many of her most popular vegan recipes, while observing her mother in the kitchen preparing big pots of stew for the A.H.I. community. Since Marshall and her siblings weren’t recognized as legal residents of Jerusalem, they were not allowed to receive a formal education and had to be self-taught growing up. “My struggles growing up as an orphan in Jerusalem made me stronger and able to approach my life in a fearless manner,” said Marshall. As an adult living in Arad, Israel, Marshall joined a women’s outreach program called “All as One” or “Ka-lah-nu Ah-Kaht” in Hebrew. Here is where Marshall was able to explore her culinary talents and flourish among other women from diverse backgrounds. The organization allowed her to meet women from all walks of life and from all over the globe, including Ethiopia, Russia, Ghana, India and Morocco. They shared cultural recipes and sold their cooked goods to the local community. “We bonded over food and shared life experiences. It was a great time for me to learn more about my passion for food,” said Marshall. Three years ago, Marshall moved back to Hyde Park because her children wanted to attend college in the United States. Returning back to the neighborhood where she was born, after many years abroad, felt like coming home for Marshall. After working in a number of vegan dining establishments and catering on the side, Paulette said she finally gained the confidence to start her own vegan food business. She named her company “Hoshes Way,” after her traditional Hebrew name. Hoshes Way has a number of products, including vegan collard greens, a vegan “chicken” pot pie and a variety of sweet pies. You may spot Paulette delivering her cooked, prepared meals throughout the community during the week and selling at barbershops and salons in Hyde Park. Getting her products on the shelves of Bonne Sante’ Health Foods Juice was a big step in the right direction for Hoshes Way. Now Paulette seeks to continue to grow her business. She plans on eventually getting her products in the new Hyde Park Whole Foods, Treasure Island and Hyde Park Produce. “Hyde Park is a great place for a small business owner to explore her passion and I truly appreciate the community’s support in this process,” said Marshall. [email protected] End of an era at Dyett High By DASCHELL M. PHILLIPS Staff Writer As of Herald press time, the last graduating class of the phased-out Dyett High School was slated to graduate Tuesday morning at the DuSable Museum of African American History, 740 E. 56th Pl. All 13 seniors were accepted into college and three of the students received full or partial scholarships, according to Charles Campbell, principal at Dyett, 555 E. 51st St. “Despite small enrollment numbers, we tried to give them a great senior experience,” Campbell said. “We want to send them off to college on a good note.” During college decision week, Dyett faculty and administrators hosted a barbecue trunk party for the students. Trunk party items included pens, paper and dorm room supplies such as sheets and shower caddies. Campbell said the students attended senior prom on the Mystic Blue Boat at Navy Pier, senior luncheon at Sullivan Steak House and had breakfast and lunch catered by their favorite restaurants during senior week. Top performing students will be surprised with chrome books at the end of the school year. Chicago Public Schools recently overturned its decision to close the school building completely and issued a request for proposal (RFP) for a new school in the location. The first public hearing for the Dyett High School RFP will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 17 at King College Prep, 4445 S.
