Welcome to you all for our 11th year

It amazes me how fresh this year
feels, with so many creative,
innovative and informative events on

I would like to say a big thank you
to all of the event holders who keep
coming up with new ideas, great
titles and themes, and are prepared
to put in the effort to build on the
success year on year.
This week couldn’t take place
without that and a lot of hard work
has been going on behind the
scenes to make sure the programme
is filled with as many different
subjects and topics
as possible.
I am incredibly proud of this year’s
line-up and, I’m sure you’ll agree,
there is something for everyone.
For this fresh programme to happen
in the 11th year shows a massive
commitment from the business
community, as well as individuals,
and continued excitement for the
week.

The role of the North as a
driver for the nation’s economy
is acknowledged and, with
increasingly devolved budgets,
we are being empowered to make
more investment decisions locally.
Throughout our area, you can feel
the energy and positivity that the
Humber is the place to invest and
the firm belief that we are building
a stronger economy, which will be
sustainable for future generations.
It is the Humber LEP’s vision to
support businesses to succeed and
grow. Since last year’s Business
Week, the LEP has received a £113m

‘Growing the Humber’ programme
we have provided grants for capital

of inspirational events, speakers and
opportunities to showcase the very
best the region has to offer in terms
of business.
With more than 6,000 delegates
attending events on both banks of
the Humber last year, we want to
build on that this year, continuing to
inspire, educate and learn together.
There are thousands of pounds worth
of quality learning and development
opportunities for businesses and
individuals right on their doorstep,
across the Humber region, rather
than just show and tell events.
This week is key to expanding your
network and we look forward to
welcoming you.

Sitting around the table to firstly
discuss the huge success of the 10th
anniversary last June, thoughts very
quickly moved on to 2015 – and how
the brilliance of 2014 could not only
be matched, but topped.
It’s fair to say there was some
concern from members as to how
2014 could be bettered.
There had been more than 60
events across the region, attended
by more than 6,000 delegates, and
the buzz and impact of Business
Week could still be felt.

FOREWORD
The 2015 Humber Business Week
takes place at an unprecedented
time for the Humber economy, with
the North at the heart of the political
agenda.
COMMUNICATIONS PARTNER
Those concerns about living up
to 2014 were clearly unfounded,
however, as when you look through
the programme of events lined-up
for the first week of June this year,
it is clear the momentum is greater
than ever.
This year’s programme covers the
widest range of industries yet, on
both banks of the Humber – from the
increasingly important developing
renewables and digital sectors to
the long-standing heartbeat of the
region through our ports.
What has been clear as the
programme for this year has come
together has been the special feeling
around Humber Business Week, and
the huge passion for it.
Longstanding supporters and
dedicated partners are involved
again, whilst many are holding or
supporting events for the first time.
Humber Business Week is stronger
than ever.
Our work at Arrival is all about
putting businesses in the spotlight
and helping them communicate
what they do, and their successes - a
perfect fit with all that Business Week
is about.
We are delighted be to be playing
our part as Communications Partner.
We are sure it will be a week to
remember.

THE BUSINESS WEEK CHARITABLE FOUNDATION
with more than 2,000 businesses.
Our Enterprise Zone, already the
largest in the country, has been
expanded, and is now home to
multinational companies, including
Siemens and Able UK. Scunthorpe
has benefitted from inward
investment from Corrboard to
develop their first site in Europe,
whilst SGS has expanded its
European headquarters in Hull
and at the Humber Bridgehead
site. Collaboration between
businesses, training providers
and the LEP is resulting in skills
and employability being more
aligned to the opportunities offered
by the Humber’s new industries.
In December the Government
announced that the first National
College for Wind Energy would be
located on the Humber, recognition
indeed that the Humber is the UK’s
Energy Estuary.
Business Week is a firm fixture in
the region’s business calendar. It
makes a huge contribution to helping
businesses succeed and furthering
our regional economic prosperity.
It’s our opportunity to showcase
the Humber. It offers support for
local businesses to network, access
support and, of course, do business.
This year there are more businesses
participating than ever and there’s
a packed programme of events in
more locations on both banks of the
estuary.
Whether you are a regular Business
Week participant or a newcomer,
involved in business regardless of
size, represent a social enterprise or
third sector organisation, you’ll find
there is something for everyone. I
look forward to you helping us make
this year’s event a resounding success.

THE NORTHERN POWERHOUSE GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES FOR
THE HUMBER REGION
8am-10am
Andrew Jackson Solicitors, Marina Court, Castle
Street, Hull, HU1 1TJ
Free. But places are limited so book your place early
The Business Week Breakfast is delighted to welcome someone who has
experienced a rise, fall and rise again in one of the most spectacular fashions
of recent times…Gerald Ratner.
A lot has been written about the role of the major cities like Manchester,
Liverpool, Leeds and Sheffield in the Northern Powerhouse. But how will
Hull and the wider Humber region benefit?
His story of Riches-to-Rags disaster at his very own hands fascinates and
intrigues. It will be an inspiration to many who have experienced rejection,
loss and humiliation. Gerald has come full-circle and is enjoying success
second time around.
Andrew Jackson will put together a panel, drawn from leading local
businesses and organisations, that can offer expert opinions and up
to date views on the wide range of business growth opportunities that
should develop in the next few years.
His story will provide a glimpse into the utmost highs and lows, building
a successful business only to have it collapse around you, and the
determination needed to pull yourself back up by your boot straps.
The panel will focus on those sectors likely to experience significant
growth, partly as a result of the proposed changes and improvements
to local infrastructure, and partly because of the existing concentration
of certain business clusters that should be able to grow rapidly with the
appropriate stimulus and encouragement.
Gerald will be joined by Claire Harper, a leading business figure who has
unparalleled experience in marketing, branding and enterprise, with the
success of some of the UK’s leading brands to her name, including Argos,
Sainsbury’s, Mamas & Papas and Ocado.
Paul Green, a local entrepreneur, completes the line-up to tell us
The panel will also consider the various barriers to growth and how these
can be overcome going forward.
There will be ample opportunities for Q&As.

Join For Entrepreneurs Only (FEO) as we bring the F-word to Humber
Business Week!
This is the biggest annual business event in the Humber region and a
focus for businesses of all types.
Do you have a great Business idea that needs investment?
Let’s face it - the best people and businesses in the world fail at times, which
is what spurs them on to become great at what they do. Failing is the first
step to succeeding because without failure we will never progress, learn and
develop our skills.
Organised by the Hull & Humber Chamber, the event represents huge
networking opportunities.
Are you prepared to swap some equity for investment?
So join us for this very special event where successful local entrepreneurs
will share real life stories of failures, flops and fiascos - but more importantly,
how they used these experiences to positively move forward.
The Airco Arena is adjacent to the KC Stadium, where the facilities are
excellent with ample free parking.
If the answer to these questions is yes, then you may be a high calibre
competitor to participate in The Investment Games to be run during
Humber Business Week 2015.
There are 100 stands, which are staffed by more than 500 business
people over the two days and, in total, in excess of 1,000 high-ranking
business people attend.
All application forms and business plans must be sent by e-mail to
[email protected] and received by 29 May 2015, after
which time no entries will be accepted.
All types and sizes of business will be in attendance.
No responsibility is accepted for entries which are lost, corrupted or
incomplete.
Don’t miss out on this rare opportunity to really learn from the failures of
those that have been there and are still doing it....only bigger and better!
The Expo is all about building up your contacts and gaining business,
plus raising your company’s profile.
3m x 2m and 4m x 2m exhibition stands are available for hire for the two-day
Expo. They are fully-working, ready-to-use stands, with free Wi-Fi access.
Sponsorship opportunities are also available, offering considerable
positive PR and numerous marketing benefits.
Do you have the drive and enthusiasm to make it work?
Could you use between £1,000 and £50,000, plus support packages, to
kick-start your business?
There will be a pre-selection process to shortlist applicants. The
shortlisted entrepreneurs will present their ideas directly to the panel of
investors on June 3, 2015, in a closed session.

Port of Immingham, DN40 2LZ (Pick-ups at The
Arena (Hull) and Forest Pines (Scunthorpe)

If you have never enjoyed a tour of the Port of Immingham, don’t miss this
opportunity to view first-hand the wonderful workings of the UK’s busiest
port as Associated British Ports invite you to join them on a tour of the
facility, with commentary from ABP experts.
The Port of Immingham is the UK’s largest by tonnage, handling over 55
million tonnes of cargo each year. It currently oversees the transit of almost
20 million tonnes of coal each year, which accounts for one third of the
nation’s requirement, while 30% of the UK’s fuel is supplied by refineries
situated adjacent to the port.
It is also the site of the world’s largest dedicated biomass terminal, built at a
cost of £130 million, which alongside its sister facility at the Port of Hull, will
supply six million tonnes of wood pellets to Drax Power Ltd to support their
conversion to low-carbon power generation.
Pickups will be 10.30am at The Airco Arena (Hull) and Forest Pines Hotel
(Scunthorpe). The coaches will then drop off at around 12.45pm at Forest
Pines and 1.30 at the Arena.

We aim to show how marketing can inspire people to want to improve

negative attitudes, and empower a community to solve its problems.

people and specialises in co-design. The Young People’s Partnership (YPP)
is the main driving force behind the project. The YPP work with its peers to
identify specific barriers to employment and work to reach solutions.
Talent Match and the YPP have identified employers are often unaware of the
barriers young people face when looking for employment and are therefore
unable to see the potential of some young people, resulting in employers
missing out on locally skilled, enthusiastic and motivated young people. The
YPP is here to help you change that.

Outstanding leaders understand how to bring out the best in the people
they manage.
The General Election of 2015 is likely to be one of the most closely fought
elections of modern times with the outcome being very uncertain.
They know their behaviour creates the behaviour in others and they
commit to becoming a better leader. Passionate about making a
difference to the people they manage, they want to see others succeed
both personally and professionally.
Different businesses will be impacted by the outcome of the election in
different ways, which may hinge on which party or combination of parties
forms the next government and the individual policies they bring forward.
In this practical and informative session Rachael Alexander, a Behavioural
Change Psychologist will demonstrate how and why outstanding leaders
need to have heightened levels of self- awareness and more importantly
how to nurture these qualities in their team. A culture of self- awareness
creates an environment of positivity, trust and intimacy resulting in targets
being achieved and high energy workplace.
Being able to performance manage ‘attitudes and temperament’’ is also
key to the process. Donna Ingleby, Head of Employment law from Rollits
will show how this can be done minimising risk to the business.
An informal question and answer session will be held at the end.

You’ve heard it before, ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know that counts’.
Whilst that isn’t entirely true, having a great contacts list can be a vital part of
growing your business.
Well, actually having a great contact list and managing it properly is vital to
any business.
We all work hard to win new customers, but once we have them secured,
how do we look after them?
In this fast-moving world, having somebody remember your name when
you call, or the fact that it is your birthday is a real bonus and increases the
chances of you staying with that business massively.
Storing your customer information and using it to make sure your customers
get the best possible service from you every time they make contact is what
this workshop is all about.
If you are currently relying on a box of business cards, there is so much more
you could do. Come and find out what.

10.30am-12 noon
Hull History Centre, Worship Street, Hull, HU2 8BG
Free. A pay and display car-park is available adjacent
to the History Centre.
This seminar, lunchtime concert and exhibition opening will show
how arts and culture can be creatively used by business leaders as a
marketing tool, as well as a means of creating an organisational culture
which drives innovation.
Heritage is an increasingly important component in terms of tourism,
business opportunities and growth. Businesses and organisations in many
regions of the country and coast around the British Isles make much of
their distinctive local heritage and cultural dimensions in business terms.
Our guest speaker Kate Sweeting - BBC Look North Business
Correspondent - will be joined by Rob Coates from Willerby Hill, a
seasoned micro business owner, for some light hearted anecdotes and
‘tricks-of the trade’, when juggling family, business and customer demands.
It will also explain how audience members can get involved.
You’ll be able to join in the discussion and share your best solutions to
keeping the work-life balance...and learn how to develop your ‘Super Powers’.
John Holtby: The prime mover behind East Yorkshire’s Cornucopia
Festival and its extension into Cornucopia Arts & Culture Ltd. He has
many years’ experience in arts & culture as a festival director and event
promoter.
In the Yorkshire and Humberside region, more attention has been paid to
capitalising on the maritime heritage of North Yorkshire and the Humber
in recent times, but perhaps the rich maritime history of East Yorkshire
coastal region remains comparatively unknown to both individuals and
organisations.
Come along, grab a bite to eat and meet other business owners who
know exactly what it’s like to overcome the challenges of running a small
business, looking after the family and keeping your customers happy.
Oh…and if you can’t get a babysitter, then just bring the family along! We
know what it’s like so everyone’s welcome.
They are also delighted to be embarking on the Hull City-Wide project
which will see the delivery of around 4,000 new homes, alongside
hundreds of jobs and apprenticeships for local people.
Too often, the relationship between arts, culture and business is one of
begging for support. We want to reverse this!
Speakers are:
Steve Shelley: A former PWC director with more than 20 years’
experience as a company director and international management
consultant. He will present the results of a research project exploring the
relationship between arts and culture and engagement, and innovation in
the workplace.
Keepmoat specialise in creating great places to live, work and play –
delivering sustainable communities and successful neighbourhoods.
This presentation, the outcome of historical research for the Seawards
Heritage project supported by the Holderness Fisheries Local Action
Group, the East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the MMO, will outline
some of the rich maritime and fisheries history and somewhat unknown
heritage of the Holderness coastline and Bridlington Bay area.
It will update on some recent heritage developments and suggest ways in
which these might be used to enhance the area’s economic development.
Dr Robb Robinson, Maritime Historical Studies Centre, The University of Hull.
Alan Raw: Radio presenter, world music promoter, POP Gallery proprietor.
