2011 REGISTRY REPORT
The Cancer Registry at Danny Bell Cancer
Treatment Center is responsible for the accurate
and timely collection, management, and analysis of data on patients diagnosed with malignant
diseases or other specified benign tumors. Our
data is submitted to the Missouri Central Cancer
Registry and to the National Cancer Data Base,
allowing comparative analysis with other hospitals
of similar size. This information aids in research
and in development of cancer treatment modalities.
The Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center
Cancer Committee meets a minimum of four times
a year as required by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. These meetings are
held at 12:00 noon in the Administrative Boardroom at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.
Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center Cancer Committee chose to review colon cancer and
breast cancer for the 2011 patient care evaluation
studies. The Cancer Committee also reviewed
12% of the analytic cases for quality control in
2011 to met compliance for Standard 2.10 as
required by the American College of Surgeons
Commission on Cancer.
Tumor Board met 24 times in 2011 with two
hundred nine cases being presented. One hundred
eighty seven of those cases were prospective cases. Fifty one percent of cases presented were assigned
a stage with 49% needing further staging workup. Tumor Board meets every two week at noon
on Tuesday in the Administrative Boardroom at
Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. Physicians
receive one hour of continuing medical education
(CME) for each case review/tumor board they attend. Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center diagnosed and/or treated 331 patients in 2011. Of
those 310 were analytic cases. A total of none
thousand seventy seven primaries have been accessioned into the registry since January 1985.
American College of Surgeons Commission on
Cancer requires an 80 percent follow-up rate for
all analytical patients from the cancer registry reference date (January 1985). Our rate is 96%. A 90
percent follow-up rate is required for all analytic
patients diagnosed within the last five years. Our
rate is 96%. This ensures medical surveillance,
survival rates and treatment effectiveness over a
continuum of care and time.
National Cancer Data Base (NCDB) call for
data was completed on time and sent without error,
meeting Standard 3.7 from the American College
of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
Education in cancer care and data management
is essential for today’s registrar. In October 2011
I attended the Missouri State Tumor Registrar’s
(MoSTRA) annual meeting in Overland Park,
Kansas and was inducted as President I am also a
member of the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA).

BREAST CANCER
Dr. Subhash Gujarati
Breast cancer is one of the leading
causes of death in women, second only to
lung cancer. In 2012, 229,060 new cases
of breast cancer diagnosis are estimated,
by American Cancer Society. While majority of new breast cancer diagnosis were
in women, small numbers of breast cancer are also diagnosed in men. In 2012,
estimated new breast cancer diagnosed in
men are 2,190, that is less than 1% of the
total number of new cancers diagnosed in
men. On the other hand breast cancer accounts for 29% of the total number of new
cancer cases in women.
Although most breast cancers are
diagnosed at an early stage, about 20% of
breast cancers are diagnosed at Stage III
and IV.
Progress is being made in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer with
digital mammography and MRI Scan;
some breast cancers which have been
missed before have been able to be diagnosed. Sentinel lymph node biopsies,
introduced in the mid 1990’s, have shown
to determine axillary lymph node status
accurately. Newer techniques are being
implemented in radiation therapy. Multiple newer chemotherapy agents are being
introduced, with improvement of survival
of advanced breast cancer.

COLON CANCER
Dr. Ray Peters
Medical Oncology
The incidence, treatment patterns, and
survival of colon cancer patients treated
at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center
in 2011 were reviewed. This is a report of
those results.
An estimated 101,340 cases of colon
cancer are expected to occur in 2011. Colon cancer is the third most commonly
diagnosed cancer and the third leading cause of cancer death in both men
and women, an estimated 49,380 deaths
from colon cancer are expected to occur
in 2011. Overall colon cancer incidence
and mortality rates are about 35% to
40% higher in men than in women. The
reasons for this are not completely understood, but likely reflect complex interactions between gender-related differences
in exposure to hormones and risk factors.
The majority of colon cancers are
treated initially with surgery. However,
adjuvant therapy may also be used. Adjuvant chemotherapy or radiation therapy
for colon cancer is as effective in patients
aged 70 and older who are otherwise
healthy as in younger patients; toxicity
in older patients can be limited if certain
drugs are avoided.
In 2011 there were 18 new cases of colon cancer seen at Poplar Bluff Regional
Medical Center. There was a prevalence
of female patients (67%) for Poplar Bluff
Regional Medical Center. 34% of cases
were diagnosed in the age group 50-59. The tumors were distributed fairly evenly
throughout the colon except for the ascending colon at 40%. Surgery was the
main modality of initial treatment at 72%.
Our survival results compare favorably to the state and nation overall as well
as the most recent data from the National
Cancer Data Base of the Commission on
Cancer.

Survivor’s Picnic
The Danny Bell Cancer Treatment Center along with Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center
sponsored the 23rd Annual Cancer Survivors Picnic in September of 2011. Survivors are
asked to bring a covered dish to enhance the barbecue and music.
Free Screenings
In May 2011 a skin cancer screening was provided with the help of Dr. Subhash Gujarati and
Dr. Emily Militzer. In October 2011 a prostate cancer screening was provided with the help of
Dr. Subhash Gujarati and Dr. S. D. Madduri.
Relay for Life
Danny Bell Cancer Treatment Center and Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center are proud to
be Corporate Sponsor for the American Cancer Society’s Annual Butler County Relay for Life
since it began in Butler County in 1995
Relay for Life was founded in 1985 by Gordan Klatt of Tacoma, WA, a surgeon and local
American Cancer Society volunteer, ran and walked solo around a track for 24 hours, traveling
81 miles. He raised $27,000 to fight cancer. Now the American Cancer Society’s signature
event, Relay for Life annually raises more than $200 million in 2,800 communities nationwide.

Look Good….Feel Better
The Danny Bell Cancer Treatment Center provided three Look Good…Feel Better programs in
2011.
Look Good…Feel Better is an American Cancer Society program that is community-based,
free, national service that teaches female cancer patients beauty techniques to help restore
their appearance and self-image during treatment.
An instructor and her students from a local cosmetology program help the patients with practical, hands-on experience. Women learn about makeup techniques, skincare, nail care and
options related to hair loss such as wigs, turbans and scarves. Each participant receives a free
kit of cosmetics for use during and after the workshop.
Health Fair
The Danny Bell Cancer Treatment Center provided a Health Fair at Home Depot in October
2011.

• Clinical breast exam (CBE) about every 3 years for women in their 20s and 30s and every year for women 40

• Breast self-exam (BSE) monthly for women starting in their 20s.
Colorectal Cancer and Polyps
Beginning at age 50, both men and women should follow one of these testing schedules:
• Double-contrast barium enema every 5 years*
• Or CT colonography (virtual colonoscopy) every 5 years*
• Or Flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years*
• Or Colonoscopy every 10 years
* If this test is positive, a colonoscopy should also be done.
Cervical Cancer
• Yearly Pap test beginning 3 years after first vaginal intercourse, but no later than 21 years old.
• Beginning at age 30, women who have had 3 normal Pap test results in a row may get screened every 2 to 3
years.
• Women 70 years of age or older who have had 3 or more normal Pap tests in a row and no abnormal Pap test
results in the last 10 years may choose to stop having Pap tests.
Prostate Cancer
Starting at age 50, PSA blood test with or without a rectal exam. How often you are tested will depend on your
