Book Club orders - Kirkwood Intermediate School

School Newsletter
Term 2 Week 5 2015
Dear Parents/Caregivers
Welcome to this edition of the school
newsletter. As we work our way through the
second term we feel lucky that the autumn
weather has continued, allowing our sports
teams to participate in the Hagley Sports
competition. Our teams play with pride and
are known for their sportsmanship. Our
Rugby team is leading the way this year,
having won the challenge shield and are
managing to hold off strong opposition.
Good luck to them, and to all of our teams for
the remainder of the season.
Thank you to those parents who have
responded to our request for home stay
families for visiting short term students who
are coming to Kirkwood early next term. The
students coming are really looking forward to
being a part of our school, and really
appreciate the opportunity to live in a New
Zealand home. Could I ask that you consider
adding your name to our list of hosts please.
Not only do you get a financial reward, but the
school also benefits which allows us to
provide good resources and smaller class
sizes for all. Thank you in anticipation.
One of the best parts of my job is walking
around the school talking with children and
their teachers, visiting classrooms and
observing the teaching and learning
happening in our school. I am impressed with
both our children and our teachers. Classes
are very well managed and are very
productive learning environments. Children
are focused on their tasks and it is obvious
that learning is happening. I know when
prospective parents visit our school, they are
frequently impressed by the calm and
respectful relationships they see between our
children and our staff. To me, this is a critical
part of our school, and enhances the
progress our children make. It is obvious that
what you do as parents contributes greatly to
this tone around our school. Our children
come to school well fed, well dressed, well
prepared and ready to learn and this makes
our job so much better – thank you for your
obvious support of our school.
As you may know the school counsellor,
Chrystal Witte, resigned from her position at
the end of last term to pursue a different
lifestyle as a farmer. Chrystal added so much
to our school, and has been missed. The
Board has advertised for a new counsellor
and I hope that we will soon have her
replacement in place. Please know that all of
our staff will do whatever they can to support
your child during this transition process.
Thank you for being such a positive and
supportive school community. Working
together we can achieve so much more for
your children.
Best wishes
Phil Tappenden

Rugby Report Tuesday 12 May
41-7 win over Cobham A. Player of the Day: Cormac
Coming after an excellent win against Chisnallwood last week our Rugby team were ready to fire,
coming up against Cobham for the Inter Intermediate School Rugby Shield.
It has been a long while since Kirkwood has held this shield. Naia and the boys slogged it out for
a comprehensive win.
All were very happy with their performance. A stand out player was Nathan with his tackling
which was textbook. Kaleb resembled a young John Kirwan smashing out into open space and
Carter proved that size does not matter taking down the biggest of the Cobham crew and turning
the tables on attack, making huge meters and offloading like Manu Vatuvei the beast!
We are very pleased to have the Shield back in its rightful place!
Here’s hoping we can hold onto it for the season, things are looking bright so far!
Thanks for reading,
Cormac
