SK Michael Campos, Faithful Navigator, 2014-2015 San Diego Diocese Installs New Bishop The Most Reverend Robert McElroy Bishop of the San Diego Diocese When he was informed that Pope Francis had appointed him to be the sixth bishop of San Diego, Bishop McElroy said: “When I was growing up, my family would come to San Diego for our summer vacation, and I was captivated by the beauty and vitality of this graced region. During my years as a priest and bishop, I have continually been struck by this same beauty and vitality in the life of the local church -- proclaiming the Gospel, embracing the poor and the marginalized, strengthening family life, forging unity in faith and solidarity amidst great cultural diversity. Now I have the privilege of becoming a member and a leader in this magnificent Catholic community and the society which surrounds it. There are not words to describe the tremendous joy and gratitude to God which I feel at this moment.” The presence of the San Diego Knights of Columbus-District Wide and Knights from other California Districts, showing support for our New Bishop Robert McElroy at his Installation Mass at St. Therese of Carmel on April 15, 2015. (Reprinted from San Diego Diocese Website) Page 1 From the Desk of the Faithful Friar Fr. James J. Burson, CJM Balboa Assembly No. 0040 San Diego, California An Exceptional Missionary The upcoming canonization of Blessed Junípero Serra is a significant event for the Church in America by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson CATHOLICS COMMITTED to St. John Paul II’s vision of the common spiritual heritage of the Western Hemisphere, outlined in the apostolic exhortation Ecclesia in America, joyfully welcomed the announcement that Pope Francis will soon canonize Blessed Junipero Serra. The founder of the first nine of 21 missions along the California coast during the 18th century, Father Serra was described by a contemporary as “zealous, chaste, humble, poor and obedient, having all these virtues equally in the highest degree… [At his death] no words could express the grief of the Indians of The colonization of California was inevitable; the contribution to that process by Father Serra was providential. that mission who called our venerable father a holy man, an angel sent by God for their relief.” Only recently has Blessed Junipero Serra become controversial, because some allege that his treatment of the native people was oppressive. However, several facts remain incontrovertible. There is much at stake in the upcom- ing canonization of Blessed Junipero Serra that will affect the future of Catholicism not only in the United States, but also throughout the Western Hemisphere. Perhaps this is why Pope Francis, the first pope from our hemisphere, has taken this courageous initiative. Vivat Jesus! ‘Bringing Christ to the People’ An interview with Archbishop José Gomez about the life and legacy of Blessed Junípero Serra Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles Archbishop Gomez: Most of all, we need to understand that Blessed Junípero Serra’s only desire was to bring Christ to the people. Obviously, there are negative consequences of colonization, with the encounter of different cultures, including results that no one expects. But these effects were not Blessed Junípero’s intention. I think he respected the traditions and the customs of the Native Americans. He was just bringing Christ to the people. During the time of Junípero Serra’s beatification, and also during the Jubilee Year 2000, St. John Paul II acknowledged and apologized for the occasions when the Church was responsible for violating the rights of Native Americans. So, too, even while acknowledging the “mistakes and wrongs” of the past, we also recognize and celebrate the heroic sanctity and good works of this holy friar, who was so instrumental in bringing the Gospel to the New World. U canonization Descriptions for Offices of the 4th Degree 4th Degree Officer Duties Navigator: The Navigator is responsible for the welfare of the Assembly. He presides over Assembly meetings, acts as an ex-officio member of all committees, appoints a membership and programming director, convenes officers for a monthly meeting, and ensures all necessary reports are submitted to the State and Supreme Council. He should also be aware of the Assembly’s financial status and ensure that his signature appears on all checks drawn. The Navigator is a member of the Advisory Board. Friar: The Friar (chaplain) is the spiritual advisor of the Assembly. He is expected to make a report at Assembly meetings on religious matters. The lady at the DMV desk at the Automobile Club suggested that I should choose my own license plate to replace it. Without hesitation, I chose “We (heart symbol) WXYZ”. Since then many people have asked us its meaning, and we decided that we owe you an explanation. While I was teaching at Oregon State University, a Catholic Industrial Psychologist, Donald G. Murray, Ph.D. and I collaborated on WXYZ Theory. Originally based on management theory, McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y, Ouchi’s Theory, to which we added Frederic W. Taylor’s Scientific Management as Theory W, we meant to indicate that every person has four leadership styles, wxyz, but we needed all four to be a full human being. But, God had another plan for us and He showed us through His Scriptures and through our work experiences, that WXYZ contained all the essence of His teachings and the way for us to live, as Christ said after his resurrection, “I give you a new commandment, Love one another as I have loved you!” He indeed loved us with all his human mind (W), human soul (X), human heart (Y) and human strength (Z). This license plate is a tribute to God’s Love for us. Page 4 Vivat Jesus! SK Michael Inoue, Editor Minutes of Meeting • April 9, 2015 Balboa Assembly 0040 1.
