INTERN /VOLUNTEER Job Descriptions for KRM Lexington
Spring, 2015
It is expected that interns/volunteers will have at least 35 hours available to the agency for the following:
Cultural Orientation Intern
Days/Times: Friday mornings and a few hours on one other week day
Description:
 Assist with logistics of Friday morning classes
 Administer CO assessments on an as-needed basis (~ 15 min/client, can be scheduled during the week)
 Assist with editing existing PowerPoint presentations and developing new topic presentations
 Assist with contacting speakers to schedule upcoming classes.
Communications Intern
Days/Times: Flexible…not necessarily during work day or in-office
Description:
 Generate content for media and social media
 Assist with developing local media contacts
 Assist with managing and growing KRM’s mailing list
 Attend special events and assist with coverage (write-ups, photography)
 Preferred but not required: experience with WordPress, prior knowledge of the refugee resettlement process/populations
Family & Youth Services Intern
Days/Times: Friday-8:30-12:30 and other times during the week. Need 4-hr blocks of time.
Description:
 Assist in tracking school enrollments
 Preparing paperwork for enrollments
 Communicating with families and FCPS
 Other duties as assigned
 Intern needs to be organized, communicative, proactive and experienced with children. Knowledge of Arabic, French,
Swahili extremely helpful.
 Any knowledge of foreign cultures or other languages a bonus!
Case Manager Intern
Days/Times: Flexible during the work week, M-F, 8-4
Description:
 Assist with case notes
 Learn the Wilson Fish materials and case notes
 Assist with Client Track enrollments and case notes
 Maintaining the appointment board
 Rescheduling/scheduling appointments
 Making case files and folders
 Preferred background: business major who desires management experience
Arts Administration Intern
Days/Times: Wednesdays are preferred
Description:
 Assist in finding best way to raise funds to make clients’ handmade creations sustainable.
 Need marketing and selling of their wares.
 Desired: experience in fund raising, micro business and sales.
Caseworker Intern
Days/Times: Flexible during work week, M-F, 8-4
Description:
 Assist with pre-arrival, including apartment setup and shopping for groceries
 Assist with core services, scheduling appointments, including going with clients to apply for social services (social security
cards, food assistance, Medicaid), signing up clients for ESL
 In-office assistance with filing, form completion and organizing case files

Interns will have opportunities to meet clients at the airport, observe general orientation, and learn about core services
provided in the first 90 days of resettlement.
Caseworker/TAG Intern
 Work both in the office and with clients.
 Assist with enrolling TAG clients in client track (software program)
 Help clients with issues related to social services, scheduling appointments
 Help the caseworker with additional issues that arise related to client services.
Grant Writing Intern
Days/Times: Flexible during work week or outside of work day
Description: Search the literature and websites for grant opportunities for funding a variety of projects with KRM. Ex: independent
artisans, discussion groups for specific demographics within the refugee populations represented in Lexington.
Medical/Public Health Intern
Days/Times: Monday, Tuesday – 9-2 or Wednesday, Thursday – 8-3.
Description:
 Call about medical bills / reporting medical insurance to medical offices
 Driving clients to/from appointments
 Calling and making follow-up medical appointments
 Organizing educational classes for clients…diabetes, exercise, nutrition, etc.
 Organizing ‘Mammogram Days’ for clients over 40.
 Attending meetings with BCH and Health Department
Employment Intern
Days/Times: Flexible during the work week, M-F, 8-4
Description:
 Enter case notes in online systems: IRIS, Pegasus, Client Track
 Make case files, filing
 Web search for online job applications
 Answer phones / take messages
 Assist with employment paperwork
 Assist during job interviews
 Make calls to employers and potential employers
ESL Tutor/Mentor Volunteer (age 20+)
Days/ Times: Flexible, depending on volunteer’s and client’s schedule. Three-month commitment is desirable.
Description:
 Visit with client at least an hour/week. Communicate with KRM if there are concerns.
Mentoring
 Make sure family has enough food and it is stored properly.
 Check the family’s mail. Tell them to bring mail to the caseworker (official information, bills, etc)
 Ensure that all notices from the landlord are understood.
 Check on the children. Make sure they have adequate clothing, check for school notices. Are they properly supervised in
the common areas around their home?
 Re-enforce basic hygiene habits, calling 911 for emergencies, keeping door locked.
ESL Tutoring
 ESL training provided every 6 weeks or so.
 Plan to work with client at their home, for an hour/week.
 Tutoring can become like a mentoring situation, as you become a regular presence in their homes.
Transportation Volunteer (age 20+)
Days/Times: Flexible in the work week for at least a ½ day at a time – morning (8-12) or afternoon (12-4)
Description:
 Take clients to a variety of appointments. Sometimes you will be asked to sit with them through the appointment, other
times it may be a drop off / pickup situation.
 Staff will prepare you for the trip – destination, purpose, any forms that are needed.

You may be asked to bring the client back to the office, or take them home, as well as report any follow-up information to
the staff person.
Match Grant Coordinator Assistant
Days/Times: Flexible during the work week, M-F, 8-4, ideal for Social Work Practicum Students
Description:
 Assist the Match Grant Coordinator with in-office documentation and monthly grant reporting.
 Organize and meet regularly with Family Outreach Interns to establish workshops and meetings for families related to
health and wellness, financial literacy, English Language Training, housing and transportation.
 Interns will have opportunities to meet clients at the airport, observe general orientation, Match Grant Orientation and
learn about core services provided in the first 90 days of resettlement and services during the 6 month Match Grant
program.
Match Grant Family Outreach Intern (2 interns needed)
Days/Times: Flexible in the work week for at least 4-5hours (1 hour in office, 1 hour planning, and 2 hours of direct client
assistance)
Description:
 Create and implement problem solving lessons plans for health and wellness, financial literacy, English Language Training,
housing and transportation
 Report regularly to the Match Grant Coordinator and the Match Grant Coordinator Assistant.
