YEAR 10 OUTDOOR EDUCATION

YEAR 10 OUTDOOR EDUCATION
Semester Overview
It was a jam packed semester for the Year 10 Outdoor
Education class. Team Building was a major focus during the
first few lessons with students working through a range of
school based initiative tasks, trust activities and group
challenges. Much of Term 1 was dedicated to improving
students understanding of water safety and surf awareness.
Students completed a series of theoretical components in
class and practical sessions at the pool before putting their
knowledge to the test in the surf. The progress made by the
entire group was remarkable with each student catching and
riding at least a few waves during both the surfing and surf
kayaking sessions.
All students were expected to keep a journal as a form of
documenting and reflecting on their participation in each of
the practical activities. Throughout the course, students also
completed a range of assessment tasks, including a water
safety brochure, surf awareness slide show / oral
presentation and overnight hike review.
Term 2 began with students analysing motivations for
participation in various outdoor adventure pursuits and
compared two contrasting activities in rock climbing and
recreational fishing. We then moved into preparations for
our overnight hike - a three day adventure from Cape Otway
through to Lavers Hill, camping overnight at Aire River and
Johanna Beach. Once again, all students participated
admirably, demonstrating improving skills in teamwork,
leadership and organisation as well gaining an insight into
trip planning, minimum impact, camp cooking, weather
considerations and risk management.
Here’s what a few students said throughout the Year 10
Outdoor Education course;
“Participating in the overnight hike has made me realise that
as long as I try my best and keep pushing myself I will be able
to accomplish anything.” Paris S
“My biggest challenge during the overnight hike was keeping
up with the fast walking pace set by the leaders. I learnt that
although I was walking a little slower at times than others,
the group was very supportive. I now know that when I find
something challenging, I can overcome it by staying positive.”
Tash H
“Considering I have a fear of heights, I was very proud of the
way I tackled the indoor rock climbing experience.”

“I participated in the
rock climbing session
to the best of my
ability and never
gave up on any of
the
challenges.”
Jesse H
“Although
the
weather was cold
and wet at times
during our fishing trip to Barwon Heads, I persisted for the entire session
and caught two fish and three crabs.” Steven M
“Jack and I worked effectively as a team whilst surf kayaking and
although the large swell made it difficult, we still managed to catch a
few waves.” Zane G
“I was really eager and determined to complete the overnight hike. I
tried my best and used my high energy levels to help everyone else as
much as I could.” Katelyn V
“I began the hike a little nervous about what was to come. The second
day especially pushed me physically and mentally, but we all finished the
final day with a sense of achievement and satisfaction.” Jake VDB

Parent discussion groups
We had a very positive response to the invitation to parents to
join our discussion group/s. The intention of the discussion was
to ensure that we have a clear understanding from the
perspective of parents, what is working well for your child, and
our students, and what difficulties or frustrations you may be
experiencing. Our first two focus groups were held this week
with very positive feedback regarding

represented the school in a professional and positive manner.
These staff are clearly highly respected and have the
challenging task of working with all staff, to drive further school
improvement based on our agreed “ideal school”. In the next
edition of the College Times the SIT team will report on their
work and outcomes – all focused on supporting student
learning and wellbeing for every individual student.
We do have a further parent discussion group meeting on

ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’ REPORT
Some areas for consideration for improvement
Exam Week

It has been fabulous to observe the preparation, nerves and
relief for our students in Years 9 – 11 who have been
participating in exam week this week. This is an important step
in the preparation of our students in readiness for undertaking
Year 12 subjects and the exams which accompany them.



Provide parents with critical information at parent
teacher interviews to ensure that all parents receive this
information if they do not have access to the internet
Ensure that students who do not have access to the
internet are not disadvantaged in any way particularly in
the Senior Years
Further clarity on the means by which parents,
particularly at Year 10, can support their child to make
an informed decision regarding their pathway/s for the
future
Consider a “homework / study centre” after school for
middle years as well as the current provision for senior
years students
I look forward to working with our staff regarding the
clarification or actions on parent concerns and will provide
updates where relevant via the College Times.
School Improvement Team Professional Learning Day
Next Tuesday June 16th is a student free day to enable all staff
to be involved in a Professional Learning Day which will be led
by our School Improvement Team (SIT).
The SIT team
members include members of our staff elected by their peers as
Alkara Ave, Lara, Victoria 3212
Next week is the start of Semester 2 subjects across the school,
which may result in some timetable changes particularly for
Middle Years students. Please check with your child, especially
for subjects such as science, foods, ELO and HAPE which require
more specialised uniform items, so that they can be organised
and ready for their classes.
Uniform
It seems that as our weather is getting colder, and the girls are
more frequently wearing their kilts and that some kilts are
shrinking in the wash. Please ensure the length of the kilts
remains knee length OR LONGER. Students are encouraged to
wear layers eg thermals, long sleeves UNDER their school shirts
and jumpers. Hoodies are not school uniform and students will
be asked to remove them if they are identified wearing
incorrect clothing.

Public Transport
st
Effective from the 21 June are changes to public transport
which appear to affect students travelling from Werribee.
Students travelling from Werribee or using the Werribee train
line will have to catch bus #190 in order to get to the new
Wyndham station as the Werribee train is no longer stopping in
Lara. Once at Wyndham they will be able to catch the
appropriate train to Lara. We are also receiving reports that
there will be changes to the transport arrangements for
students using public transport from Corio. As this is a public
transport issue we would encourage affected families to access
the PTV website: ptv.vic.gov.au and then to the Journey Planner
which should provide you with time and information required.
Cultural Diversity Day
On Thursday 18th June the SRC have organised a Cultural
Diversity Day to celebrate Cultural Diversity. There will be
special activities for Year 7 and 8 students, as well as a very
special whole school assembly. The SRC and some helpers
outside the team (thanks Harrison!) have worked hard to make
this a special and memorable day. We will be sure to include
some photos in the next College Times.
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students
with Disability
All schools in Australia, including Independent and Catholic
schools, are currently participating in the Nationally Consistent
Collection of Data on School Students with Disability. The Data
Collection is an annual count of the number of students with
disability receiving educational adjustments to support their
participation in education on the same basis as students
without disability.

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)
Acknowledgement of Positive Behaviours
Why acknowledge positive student behaviour?
As part of our School Wide Positive Behaviours Framework we acknowledge students who display positive behaviour to re-enforce the
teaching of new behaviours and to encourage this positive behaviour to be displayed in the future.
These positive interactions aim to build relationships between staff and students in order to maximize academic engagement in the
classroom.
Parent Invovlment:
Parents are an integral part of School Wide Positive Behaviours. As teachers we only interact with students for approximately 30 hours
per week, which limits our ability to have an ongoing positive impact on student behaviour. Parent involvement in encouraging positive
behavior is critical to support the work we do at school in teaching students expected behaviours.
Success Pass:

Success Passes are a recognition or acknowledgment of positive behaviour that has been
displayed by a student; this program aims to build positive relationships between
teachers and students

Students who receive a success pass go in to the draw to receive a small prize at school
assemblies
Postcards:



Postcards are a new initiative which aims to further build positive relationships between
staff & students, and staff & families
Postcards are distributed for similar reasons to a success pass, however they are mailed home to share the students’ positive
behaviour with parents
If you wish to learn more, or discuss SWPB further, please feel free to contact our Leading Teacher in charge of Developing
Positive Behaviours, Mr. Ben Johnson, at [email protected] OR call Lara Secondary College on 5282 8988

Centre Stage Pantomime Performance
Review
Written by Kaitlyn D and Jorja D, Year 10.
On the 26th of May, the Year 10 Centre Stage group with the
help of Miss Pearson, our new teacher here at Lara Secondary
College, created a wonderful pantomime performance about
‘The Ugly Duckling’, which we performed to the Grade 1
students from Lara Primary School. The Year 10’s spent
numerous weeks putting together and rehearsing the play. The
show was a complete success. The children loved it so much
they asked the Year 10’s to perform again in the Drama Room
at LSC, for a number of other Primary School classes.
From Miss Pearson:
Congratulations to the Year 10 Centre Stage students for
pursuing their Pantomime Project and bringing it to final
fruition for the joy of our young audiences. Grade 1 students
from Mrs. Bennett’s class at Lara Primary School forwarded
their appreciation to the Year 10 students saying “Thank you for
your fabulous, excellent, awesome, wonderful, amazing and
fantastic show! We loved it!...We loved the props, the setting,
the acting, the costumes, the lights, the bow at the end, the
curtains and the story. We loved everything about it!” I look
forward to the encore production before the end of the school
term. Well done to all.

VCAL PDS Art – Community Art Project
The Applied Learning Art students have been working together
on two different projects with the aim to benefit or contribute
to our local community. The ‘Café Project Team’ have been
busy liaising with local café owner of Espresso Café to design
and create a series of Italian themed artworks for the café’s
courtyard area. Students collaborated to paint colourful Tuscan
style window shutters and flower boxes in 2D form. These were
installed last week and now beautify the outdoor area for the
public’s viewing pleasure. The ‘Alice Set & Costume Production
Team’ have been designing and making multiple costumes, set
and prop pieces for the LSC Drama Production of ‘Alice & Peter
in Wonderland’ which played last week in the Performing Arts
Complex. Woodwork, painting, sewing and sculpture are some
methods for making the exciting collection of materials that has
been well used by our local actors and enjoyed by over 200
audience members.

Year 8 Drama Performance ‘Alice &
Peter in Wonderland’
Written by Pryde S and Dion C, Year 8E.
Year 8E had the privilege of performing to the Grade 3 & 4
students of Lara Primary School, parents of the cast and some
Year 8, 9 and 10 classes of LSC. ‘Alice and Peter in Wonderland’
is a story about a brother and sister who follow a white rabbit
to the magical world ‘Wonderland’. “The play was a blast and
was fun to do. We all had a great time”, said Pryde who played
the role of Peter. “I think everyone had a good time and did a
really good job and put a lot of effort into it”, expressed Dion
who played the memorable role of the March Hare from the
Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Thank you for Miss Pearson our drama
teacher for putting this play on!

Year 9 Connections Program: Together We
Do Better for the Community and
Environment
Focus Group Overview
The theme for Connections in Term 2 and 3 is ‘Together We Do
Better for the Community and Environment’. Working in small
focus groups, students aim to meet the needs of the local
community and environment, while developing partnerships or
‘Connections’ with organisations and individuals. Please be
aware, students will be assessed via a Round Table
Presentation, which will be held on the first Tuesday (July 14 th)
back after the mid-year holidays. As part of this process,
students are expected to provide a description of the aims of
the program, employability skill development and learning
outcomes achieved. They will also present their visual diary,
work portfolio / creative response and employability skills
workbook. Students will not be required to attend school for
the entire day, but should plan to arrive fifteen minutes prior to
their appointment and allow at least an hour to complete their
presentation and receive feedback. It is essential all students
are dressed neatly in full school uniform. Please note, Round
Table Presentations are a compulsory component of the
Connections Program and all students are expected to attend
their appointment. Students will be advised of their
appointment time within the next week.
Animal Welfare
Students involved in this focus group learn about a range of
significant natural environments with a view to identifying the
impacts on native wildlife and the management strategies put
in place to ensure their survival. Students work closely with
Park Rangers, Conservation Victoria and various volunteer
groups on jobs such as tree planting and track maintenance to
help protect our local environments and the native animals that
inhabit these areas.
From Miss Pearson:
Congratulations to the Year 8 C & E Drama students for their
successful drama productions last week in the new LSC
Performing Arts Complex. You all looked fantastic in costume
and your group energy was really buzzing. What a great way to
finish off our Semester of Drama! Many thanks to Rob Irvin for
his wonderful support in the construction of the stage and
lighting and sound for the show. I look forward to seeing many
more exciting performances from our budding drama students
in the future.

in
the
Community Sport Leadership
focus group, learn about coaching
and leadership and what impact
positions of responsibility can
have on local sporting teams.
Students
examine
different
coaching styles and how to plan lessons/sessions to train a
team. This culminates in a series of peer coaching sessions and
finally a sports day for students of Lara Primary School.
Students involved in this focus group work closely with elderly
residents of St Laurence Aged Care facility. Each week, a group
of 12 students visit Costa House to run morning activities, whilst
smaller groups of students plan and organise an afternoon
excursion and support the residents to attend. Students also
examine a range of issues that affect the elderly, from
community perceptions, alzheimers, dementia and other
related matters.

Some new books (Traditional Format)
Students involved in the Fish for
the Future focus group research
and visit a variety of aquatic
environments within the local
region. The program aims to
provide students with the
opportunity to develop their
angling skills, and also gain an
insight into local fish stocking
initiatives, recreational fishing
guidelines,
the
effects
of
introduced species, and various
other environmental and fishing
related issues.
Heron Yacht
The aim of the Heron Yacht focus group is to introduce students
to the skills required to work in a manufacturing type industry
where attention to detail, the ability to follow direct and written
plans, as well as problem solve on the job is critical. Students
work closely with skilled volunteers to build and refurbish race
spec Heron Yachts. This is very much a hands-on learning style
project with a major focus on the development of carpentry
skills.
Peer Mentoring
Students involved in the Peer Mentoring focus group have the
opportunity to work in classrooms at Lara Primary School on a
weekly basis and help them with reading, writing, spelling,
maths and games. Students also work with Lara Primary School
students at LSC in a variety of areas around the school including
Cooking, Art and Sport.

OBTAINING AN APPRENTICESHIP – Well and truly gone
are the days when a 15 year
old could easily obtain an
apprenticeship. The employer
would assist with transport to
the work site, would teach the
apprentice from scratch, and
the apprentice would often
leave school with little idea of
what the trade involved.
Nowadays,
employers
generally prefer the new
apprentice to have completed
Year 12 (either VCE or VCAL),
be at least 18 years old, with a driver’s licence and a
vehicle, and to have completed a pre-apprenticeship in the
trade involved. Sometimes the apprentice will have
completed the pre-apprenticeship while at school in a VET
program (eg VET Building and Construction), or
alternatively they will have completed it at a VET provider
after completing Year 12 (taking about four months).
Pre-apprenticeship courses are available in many trades
such as automotive, carpentry, electrotechnology,
furniture making and plumbing. Once these requirements
Alkara Ave, Lara, Victoria 3212
Page 12
Issue 10 - 2015
have been met, the would-be apprentice must find an
employer willing to take them on to complete the
apprenticeship. These can sometimes be found among
friends, relatives, sports associates and so on. Alternatively,
Group Training Companies employ many apprentices. See:
www.grouptraining.com.au.
Why are so few apprenticeships advertised nowadays?
Many employers recruit their apprentices straight from
school or use their social and personal networks. Often the
apprentice will have been selected after a work experience
trial. It is also interesting to note that an increasing
number of apprentices are quite commonly well into their
20’s, after leaving another career.

changes in their schools and communities through
volunteering, and La Trobe wants to recognise these
efforts. La Trobe has announced a working partnership
with the Country Fire Authority and the Duke of Edinburgh
program. These partnerships reflect the desire of La Trobe
to collaborate with people and organisations that share the
vision of making a positive difference, and will help
recognise the impact students are making in their
communities. More information about the Aspire program
can be found on the La Trobe website. Online applications
opened on Monday 1 June. See: www.latrobe.edu.au,
