Caris Dunn Bailadora Director JV Belles Assistant Director Dance I-IV Instructor Aerobic Dance Instructor 7 Organization Spotlight Please congratulate the members of the McKinney Boyd Color Guard JV Winter Guard on winning 2nd place and earning the silver medal at the 2015 NTCA State Regional A Championships this past Saturday at the Marcus High School in Flower Mound, TX. What is even more astonishing then winning a medal is how they did it. Winning a state color guard medal is very challenging and difficult for a young team but what is so remarkable is how these incredible students pulled off one of the most unbelievable performances I have ever seen in my 15 years of teaching color guard. The JV Winter Guard traveled to Marcus High School this past Saturday the same way they have done all year. They rehearsed at MBHS, put on their uniform, prepared their hair and make-up, loaded their equipment, and headed to Marcus HS for their very last performance of the year. As we pulled into Marcus HS and checked in, we could see in their eyes the nerves and fear start to kick in. For many of our JV members, this was their very first championship. Many of our JV members are brand new to the sport, so nervousness and fear was to be expected. When we arrived, the students went to their designated area where they prepared for the competition. There were hundreds of students and spectators all over the building. The atmosphere was incredibly electric and intense. The students spent the next 45 minutes soaking it in and preparing themselves mentally for the show. Then 10 minutes before the students were about to warm up disaster struck! As the JV students were getting their equipment they had realized they had forgotten a set of flags for one of their JV members. It was 10 minutes before we were supposed to warm up so there was no time to travel back to Boyd to retrieve the missing equipment. Panic started to set in and the guard staff frantically tried to think of ways we could do our show. We then calmed down and started to think. We then thought the only solution was to perform without a member of the JV. This is when our JV students stepped up. 8 Cont. next page Our students let us know that they did not want to perform without a member of their team. They explained they made the mistake and they were not going on without her. They told the staff that they were a family and they were going to do anything it took to make sure that the “entire” team performed. That is when another team stepped up. The Wakeland High School JV guard just finished their performance and were done for the day and our assistant guard instructor Casey Dunham had an idea. She found the Wakeland JV Guard staff and explained our situation. She asked if we could borrow their blue flags for our show. Knowing what was happening and seeing that we were in hurry to find a solution, they quickly gathered all of their blue flags and gave us their equipment to use for our show. Even though this guard was in the same class and was competing against us, they stepped up without any hesitation and immediately gave us their equipment to use. At first I was reluctant to use it. The flags were a completely different color, completely different weight, and our students had never used them before. They would only have a matter of minutes to use them and get used to tossing and spinning them. This was a HUGE risk, however I saw the faces of our students and they were not going perform without their teammate. I saw they were going to do whatever it took perform the show. Even if that meant spinning a piece of equipment that they had never spun before. The guard staff looked at our kids and realized that nervousness and fear quickly turned to determination and focus. We gathered the team and headed for warm up. The JV students were in complete concentration on what was about to happen. The situation did not phase them one bit. Each student put their heads against the wall, closed their eyes, and visualized their show as we went to each warm up room. In warm up the JV students were on fire. There was no fear or nervousness in their eyes. This 9 Cont. next page was a different team and we were watching the transformation take place as we went from room to room. When they started warming up on equipment, they began spinning their new flags. Within minutes they were focused on what they had to do in order to spin a completely different flag they had never spun before. After running through the show in warm up, I looked over to my assistant Casey Dunham and told her that I think we are about to see something special. The JV students headed to the gym where it was completely packed full of people. We were the very last guard of the day. 69 other guards had performed before us and we were the very last one. For a young group, performing in front of a large crowd would have been very scary but it did not phase them one bit. We stretched the floor, the kids moved into position, and they announced the group. The music started playing and the show began. The McKinney Boyd JV guard began their performance with more confidence and passion then I had ever seen before. As the music kept playing and as the students kept performing, the show kept getting better and better. I could see in their eyes and in their performance that they were not going to let this potential disaster ruin their show. The audience saw the heart and emotion they were conveying and quickly began cheering for them as they went through every phrase of their show. While spinning brand new equipment, the McKinney Boyd JV guard put on a spectacular performance with absolutely ZERO mistakes. They took a piece of equipment they had only spun for a few minutes and performed the show like they been using it all season long. It was one of the most beautiful and most memorable performances I have ever seen. The show was so beautiful and so emotional. As the students stepped off the court, they knew they had done something special. What was so amazing was the experience meant more to them then winning a medal. They did not care what the results were. They were proud of what they had just accomplished. Little did they know the judges saw what they did and were moved by their performance as well. The judges had no idea they were spinning new pieces of equipment. They 10 Cont. next page just saw a beautiful performance by a very talented bunch of students. Because of that, the judges rewarded them with the silver medal. Hearing each group be called one by one in the awards ceremony is something the MBHS Guard Staff will never forget. I have had the privilege to place many medals around the necks of many guards in my career, however this one was truly special. I have never seen a guard step up like this one and do something so remarkable. What was even better was the group that let us borrow their equipment placed 3rd and received the bronze medal. The students of the MBHS JV guard showed the true meaning of Bronco pride and spirit. During a potential disastrous situation, these students rose up and showed incredible class, character, courage, and perseverance. Seeing the faces of the students as I placed the silver medal around each of their necks is something I will carry with me the rest of my life. Please congratulate the students of the MBHS JV Winter Guard for an amazing end to a wonderful season! Sincerely, Jason J.
