Seven Steps to Staying Young
Staying young and healthy is a conscious choice that involves caring for the
body, mind and spirit.
What might it be like if you truly felt ‘vibrant’ and ‘alive’ not just occasionally,
but throughout your life – decade after decade!
The catalyst that propels most of us towards healthy living could be a major
one like the diagnosis of a life-threatening illness, or as minor as the passing
remark of a stranger. Nevertheless, when the right conditions prevail, seeds of
change germinate in all of us sooner or later, and we prepare ourselves for the
road to health.
1.Change your diet - To begin with stop eating white flour. That includes rumali
roti, naan, white bread and all other foods made from maida. It is a depleted
food. It borrows more nutrients from your body in order to get metabolised.
Switch to wholewheat bread instead of white bread, brown rice instead of
white rice, soya milk instead of whole milk. Snack on sprouts, or roasted
whole channa instead of farsan and fried snacks. Eat whole fruits instead of
juice concentrates. Eat whole grains like jowar, bajri, naachini and whole
pulses.
2. Detoxify regularly - inner cleansing or detoxification is a process of clearing
toxins from the body thereby cleansing it of mucus and congestion. It makes
you feel energised, light and revitalized. It is as important as an overall
lifestyle change and needs specific dietary changes.
3. Get in shape - Eat food with a new approach. Look at its nutrient density
rather than its caloric value.
4. Control stress - It begins with the mind. A youthful state has more to do with
what’s going on in your mind than with what’s going on in your body. Each
one of us participates consciously or unconsciously in creating our own
illnesses. Your attitude towards life shapes your health and looks.
5. Nourish your relationships to stay healthy - Try to develop loving
relationships with your family, friends, spouse, pets – everyone! Love is
rejuvenating. It makes life meaningful. It has healing energy. It is a powerful
stimulant to the immune system.
6. Stop negative thinking - Negative thoughts make you take negative action,
which brings about negative reactions from others. This increases stress in
your life. Negative thinking can make you depressed and look old.
7. Stop smoking - Stub out that cigarette! This is probably the single best thing
you can do to stay young and healthy.

Evolved Eating
Your evolution in the new world will also depend on your willingness to eat
right. As adults with our own homes and choices before us, especially with the
introduction of a plethora of western style foods, life has become complicated,
as we are exposed to innumerable temptations. However, each bite of these
delectable morsels takes away some of your health. We do not seem to understand that what we put into our mouth truly does become us.
To sort out the complicated issue of what is good for us and what is not, along
came the dieticians and nutritionists, creating more confusion. No longer was
food just an apple, carrot, or rice. It was now calories, proteins, carbs, fats, vitamins, minerals, trace elements, fibre, enzymes, antioxidants, etc. The result:
we have stopped using our instinct.
Food hysteria is at its peak. Every corner we turn has a pack of biscuits staring at us. Every nook has chips begging to be eaten. From a country that ate
red rice, whole wheat rotis, lentils, jaggery sweets, sea salt (Gandhiji walked
the Dandi march for it), rock salt, ghani oil, we have become the land of white
bread, white rice, refined sugar, refined oil, refined salt and biscuits. The poor
sadly emulate us. No one is telling them the truth.
Consciousness is requiring us to be attentive, alert, aware, and open to the
needs and challenges of the hour. Not possible, if one does not have the energy or one’s mind is not clear or one is plagued with any number of ailments.
It is not about what system one follows. No ‘ism’ is in question here. It is not
about vegetarianism, veganism, or fruitarianism. It matters only if we eat to
sustain the life within us. If not, we stuff ourselves, become foodies, or make
such an issue of the dos and don’ts of the various ‘isms’ that it overtakes our
life.
Let your appetite/hunger guide you. It is a body signal for nutrients. Cells want
food they will recognise. Not anything in the name of food. Make your choices

Oh Omega!
The elusive Omega-3 is abundantly available in walnuts and flax seeds, so
vegetarians need not despair. Small things added daily in our food improves
our health tremendously. A recent study from the American College of Cardiology has suggested that among Indian heart patients, almost every second
has high blood pressure, every fourth has diabetes, and every fifth has plaque
deposits in his/her arteries. Omega-3 plays a vital role in improving these
health issues. Good sources of Omega-3 are walnuts, and oily fish. Cheaper
sources are flax seeds (called alsi in local stores) and chia. But their consumption should be moderate since they add calories.
