This year we commemorate the Anzac Centenary, marking 100 years since our
nation’s involvement in the First World War - a milestone of special significance to
all Australians as it helped define us as people and as a nation. Last weekend,
Myrtleford paid tribute to the year 1915 in the parade for the Festival. In history,
Australians landed at what became known as Anzac Cove on 25 April 1915 and
established a tenuous foothold on the steep slopes above the beach. Their sacrifice
is honoured each year.
With honour and pride I stood and watched the students from Marian, St. Mary’s,
MyrtlefordP-12, the Kindergarten and child-care centres pay tribute in a concrete
way to all the lives that had been lost and/or changed forever. Dressed as soldiers
and nurses, carrying banners and flags, speaking with pride of their families and
their schools, walking as fields of poppies … lest we forget. There is much written
and described for us in song, art and more –
Marching Men, by Marjorie Pickthall
Under the level winter sky
I saw a thousand Christs go by.
They sang an idle song and free
As they went up to calvary…
but none more fitting of our love and pride and applause this week than those who
walked and carried the banner for the youth in our world last week. We are in safe
hands when the young people of our town model being the voice for the voiceless
and the light in a sometimes dark world, just as Jesus modeled for them.
I congratulate Maria Fin, Liz Rouse, the cadets, students in the parade, our
princesses and their partners and the whole Marian team for making us so proud.
Ms. Vicky McGowan

Acknowledgement of Country
We acknowledge the Minjambuta
people, the very first custodians of this
land. The history of this area goes back
thousands of years when the Minjambuta
people moved along the valleys and
mountains and rivers from the areas
around Mt Hotham down to near where
the Hume Freeway now stands. We
thank them for the land they now share
with us. We pledge ourselves to work
with all Aboriginal people as they look for
reconciliation and justice in the years to
come.

MIDDLE SCHOOL PE - BOCCE
MIDDLE SCHOOL OUTDOOR EDUCATION – SURF CAMP
Last week a group of 20 middle school students participated in a three day surf
camp at Torquay. It was a fantastic opportunity for students from Myrtleford to
experience the amazing coastline and participate in an activity that is not available
to us being so far from the ocean. Everyone learnt very quickly how physically
demanding surfing is with a range of ailments from muscle soreness to wetsuit
chafing. There was some time spent on theory covering rips, parts of the board,
wind direction etc however most of the time was spent in the ocean catching
waves. Everyone progressed at different rates however by the end of the three
days everyone had managed to get to their feet. All students have now gained
their Level One Safe Surfing Certificates. A great time was had by all! Davina

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS - WONTHAGGI
On Thursday the 5th of March, Ebony King, Maddie Lennox, Allie Langdon and
Tahra Murtagh accompanied by Maria Fin and Rebecca McLauren travelled to
Wangaratta for the International Women's Day Breakfast. Key speaker, Karen
Howe, discussed the need to provide gender and disability awareness. Our
SRC members have learnt to challenge inequity and embrace diversity to
create a more inclusive school community.
An inspiring quote from the day: "You can't take a step forward with both feet
on the ground." By Ebony King

Inquiry Mindset Project 2015
INQUIRY MINDSET
PROJECT 2015
Effective teaching not only involves imparting information and understandings to students
(or providing constructive tasks, environments, and learning) but also involves assessing
and evaluating students’ understanding of this information, so that the next teaching act
can be matched to the present understanding of the students. This “second part” is the
feedback part, and it relates to the three major questions: Where am I going? How am I
going? and Where to next? These three questions address the dimensions of feed up, feed
back, and feed forward. An ideal learning environment or experience occurs when both
teachers and students seek answers to each of these questions. -- John Hattie and Helen
Timperley.
Our work this term has been focused and intense. We have formulated a task driven
response this week by gathering data from all subject areas and year levels and marking the
work against a common assessment rubric formulated by the team. Once this work has
been analysed we hope to find the gems we have been digging for – the common mistakes,
the gaps in process and learning. From here we can cement our strategies for literacy
improvement.
Our team will be traveling to Bendigo next week to work with other schools under the
tutelage of Helen Timperley, further enhancing our understanding, knowledge and
practice. We are very excited at the prospect of further engaging in professional
development to augment our work.

DINKUM ASSORTED
Probably the only play in the world written for a cast of fifteen women and a nanny goat,
Dinkum Assorted is a wild comedy with music and tap dancing, set alongside some thoughtprovoking stories about women striving for personal and professional freedom.
Set in an Australian country town biscuit factory during World War II the play shows how the
all-female cast factory workers fight to save the factory, run a ‘Mum’s Army’ Civil Defence
Unit, put on a show for the War Effort – and cope with the fact that two thousand US airmen
have just been stationed outside town.
Portraying the hilarious and poignant adventures of women working in a biscuit factory in
remote North Queensland during World War II. Dinkum Assorted offers fifteen female artists
the opportunity to laugh, cry, sing, tap dance and ride a motorbike around stage as they plot
to save Australia’s iconic biscuit, become air raid wardens, put on a show for two thousand
American airmen, and kidnap Rita the goat, the regimental mascot.
We have added an extra flair to our show here at Marian, with our crew dressed in US army
gear, stationed just outside Warabadanga, and not shy about adding their own musical talents
to the production. We also have a couple of extra young men working at the factory (knocked
back by the armed forces due to physical disabilities). All in all – our show will have all of the
best bits about the play PLUS MORE!

Are your Easter eggs ethical?
In West Africa it is estimated that there are 500,000-1,500,000 children working in the
cocoa sector who may have been trafficked and who are working in exploitative
conditions. Much of the chocolate we consume is made with cocoa beans picked by
these children.
ACTION: Download the Good Egg Guide from http://www.stopthetraffik.org/au and
start buying certified Easter eggs to share within your church, school community and
workplace!
Spread the word about slavery-free Easter chocolate and enjoy chocolate that is ethical!
