Here at the end of week five, we are
reminded of the busyness of our lives on a
daily basis – our school is no exception…
immunizations, AFL footy, the Year Eleven
city camp, college production rehearsals,
basketball, soccer, bike rides, cooking, staff
meetings, SACs and work requirements, fete
preparations, cabaret set-up, Naplan testing
… and the cross country tomorrow to name
just a few!
The College closed for classes last Monday so
that the whole staff community could engage
in some professional development with
speaker Brendan Spillane in Wodonga for the
day.
Brendan Spillane is an acclaimed Australian
educator, speaker and coach. A former
teacher and Principal, he has also developed
and led substantial systemic change
initiatives focused on organisational renewal
and improvement in the Catholic education
system. These projects involved the design
and implementation of self-review, planning
and improvement frameworks for all. He led
us through a day designed to challenge, raise
questions, critique and analyse processes and
systems, practice crucial conversations and
more. He asked us to look carefully for the
‘joys’ in our lives and to build on these as the
foundations of happiness, satisfaction and
success. Staff professional development is an
important part of planning in a school –
feeding those who feed others, allowing time
for reflection on practice and work among
stimuli delivered by respected practitioners.
The staff enjoyed the day and will continue
to reap rewards from Brendan’s input as
they move to discuss further the College’s
vision for the future.
The Parents and Friends Association led by
Tiffany Iaria and Bec Wilson, did an
amazing job in coordinating an excellent
Fete for St. Mary’s and Marian last week.
Despite the rain or inclement weather,
many families came out to support the
food, bric-a-brac, book, plant, flower,
produce and gift stalls. They listened to
some great up and coming talent, had their
faces painted, rode ponies, lobbed a chock,
handballed a goal, had a henna tattoo and
more on the day. The Marian community
was out in force promoting the school,
participating in all arenas on the day and in
preparation before the event. I want to
publicly thank all staff and students for
their efforts. This event is a primary
fundraiser for our Parents and Friends –
thank you in advance for your efforts.
MARIAN COLLEGE
SCHOOL BLAZERS
UNIFORM UPDATE:
Ties have been ordered
and those who require
them will be contacted as
soon as they arrive.
We are all grateful for what
we have here at Marian.
Thank you for your continued
support of the whole College
Community.
Ms. Vicky McGowan
Last week we said thank you to all our
mothers – in quiet ways, in
demonstrative ways, with flowers, gifts,
hugs and laughs. We say a prayer for all
“mums” now in God’s care and take a
minute to think of and pray for those
who are missing their “mums”.
Blazers are due to be
delivered to Cartwright
Fashions
during
the
month of May. Parents
and students will be
notified
immediately
when they arrive; so that
they can be collected and
worn during these cold
autumn
days.
(Remember
that
an
appointment can be
made with Mr Kevin
Bourke or Ms Vicky
McGowan to talk about
finances if needed or
desired.)
We look forward to
seeing our students in
their new blazers!
I am flawed.
I am a good and gifted person.
I am called to offer my gifts.

WELCOME AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
OF COUNTRY
We acknowledge the Minjambuta people,
the very first custodians of this land. The
history of this area goes back thousands of
years when the Minjambuta people moved
along the valleys and mountains and rivers
from the areas around Mt. Hotham down
to near where the Hume Freeway now
stands. We thank them for the land they
now share with us. We pledge ourselves to
work with all Aboriginal people as they look
for reconciliation and justice in the years to
come.

Keynote speakers: Julian Burnside AO QC: "Unenlightened Self-Interest"- a passionate speaker whose speech addressed
three areas- global warming, asylum seekers and marginalised people. Filled with wonderful stories, it challenged all to
consider the principle of reciprocity. I have his discussion paper- it may be of interest to you. Brigid Arthur CSB - spoke
about people living on the 'outside'. Jesus embraced the outsiders. As Brigid said in summing up: "doing something no
matter how small, is better than doing nothing" and “love makes a wave”. Andrew Hamilton SJ - posed questions about our
ministry, about where our light will be and about hope. He presented a speech from the point of view of Pope Francis and
what he might want to say to us. Faith is curious, interested in people and is about noticing the world. This was a simple but
powerful statement. Dr. Mary Coloe pbvm Associate Professor – “Living a Temple Spirituality” –her analytical
interpretation of information conveyed a message to us: the World needs people who are Temples

Deeply contemplative

Sources of nourishment and healing

Living in the World as God’s House.
“As the temple and heart of God in the world we were called to take a long, loving look at reality.”
[email protected]
[email protected]
Mary Franzmann pbvm – linked the spirituality of Nano Nagle to Heart Spirituality. In her quiet and gentle delivery, Mary
clearly stated that spirituality is about life, about being attentive and is transformational. We are all called to nourish this
Heart Spirituality.
Katherine Burke and Claire Quin, Judges, County Court Melbourne- these two sisters in an entertaining and humorous
manner talked about the value of a Presentation Education. How they were encouraged and inspired to pursue their calling.
There were many opportunities for reflective conversations from Presentation perspectives including, what is the essence of
Presentation Ministry? There was discussion on what is happening in Presentation schools throughout Australia and on what
is happening in our school.
An inspirational conference with plenty of time for thought and personal reflection.

Who: students from Marian College, St Mary's and Myrtleford P12 have been invited to take on the roles of the chess pieces just like in
1454, where two rivals for the hand of the Lord of Marostica’s eldest daughter were dissuaded from fighting a duel by being invited to play
a game of chess. People were used as chess pieces, on a giant chess board in the town square to settle the conflict.
Rehearsals are well under way and we have had an overwhelming response from students.
Come, join in the fun and watch our students perform.
For our Middle School LOTE Italian students this is an integral part of the dimension: Intercultural knowledge and language
awareness, from the Languages Domain in AusVELS.
Students’ knowledge of the connections between language and culture, and how culture is embedded throughout the communication
system is developed. Progress through this dimension is demonstrated performance in the language being studied.
Notes for chess pieces
1. Costumes: The costume for pawns, knights & rooks consists of an open sleeved tunic and a headpiece in either white or black.
The costume for the kings, queens & bishops is a long open sleeved gown & collar plus a headpiece in either white or black.
Ideally, you should wear a long sleeve skivvy of the same colour as the tunic and dark trousers and black shoes.
2. Arrive at the church hall no later than 12
noon. Lunch will be served in the hall from
12.15pm. After lunch you can watch an
entertainer performing on the chess board
but be ready to change into your costume
from 1.30pm . DO NOT WANDER OFF
ELSEWHERE!!
3. You can expect to be called for your
entrance at around 2.20pm by the Marshal.
You need to line up as directed, march from
the hall in line, stand out of sight behind the
castle wall then proceed through the castle
archway onto the chess board when told to
by your flag bearer.

Learning Mentor and Subject Interviews
th
Thanks to all those parents who were able to make the interviews on the 29 of April. I also know that some teachers, mentors and parents who could not meet on this day have been able
to meet since that day to discuss their child’s learning.
We place a great value on these conversations as they play an important role in informing families of their children’s progress and areas in which they may improve. With our work in
Learning Mentor we are moving towards these conversations being more student lead and skilling our students to be able to better reflect on and talk about their learning.
I understand that some families have had difficulties in logging onto PAM. Please contact your Learning Mentor if this is the case and we will be able to assist. Some passwords have required
resetting and the Learning Mentor will be able to organize this for you.

YEAR 11 MELBOURNE CAMP

CAPTAIN’S CORNER
Hello from the Captains and Year 12s!
It’s been a rough couple of weeks for us; there have been SACs in most subjects, but the big one was the English SAC. We managed to make it through alive
and are waiting for the (hopefully good) results.
However, it hasn’t been all doom-and-gloom. There have been some celebrations with a few of us turning 18, and also the school fair provided us with the
opportunity to help the school out. The Captains all manned the inaugural Promotions Tent, offering information and even tours of the schools. The Fair raised
a fantastic amount of money for St Mary’s and Marian. Congrats and a big thank you to everyone who helped out to make it possible: you are the heart of our
two schools. In other news, the Year 11s went to Melbourne on their camp accompanied by many teachers, most of whom have offices near our little slice of
heaven, Café M. Sadly, the Year 12s were not allowed in Café M when the teachers were away, so we found other places to call our own, and filled them with
everything Café M was famous for. Well done to us! Thankfully, now we are back in our home. That’s all from the Year 12s and Captains,
Until next time!
VCE EXAMS GAT EXAM
All Year 11 and 12 students completing 3/4 units will be
required to sit the GAT and end of year exams unless prior
arrangements have been made to complete subjects under a
non-scored basis. It is important to note that VCAL students
are not automatically exempt from the end of year external
VCE exams. Please request a meeting should you wish to
discuss this matter further.
