It symbolises courage, determination and loyalty. It has become part of our Australian thought, language and life, and been that way since 1915. No time however has been more significant than this year 100 years since the birth of this legend. Our College privately commemorated this occasion in the first week of the term with a beautiful and moving assembly led by Maria Fin and the year twelve captains. This last week, Marian College was publicly represented at two important occasions here in Myrtleford. On Thursday last, we attended the significant celebration of the unveiling of the Alby Lowerson statue in the middle of town. Amie Antonella (11) read her winning piece of prose about the life, the journey of our Victoria Cross recipient. On Saturday morning, Marian was present at a moving commemoration staged at the Cenotaph to honour fallen men and women in all wars and conflicts since the First World War. On this occasion Michaela Bourke read her piece entitled "A Soldiers Story", our Scout representatives marched and placed a floral tribute, and our cadets stoically stood watch at the monument. On both occasions our College was represented proudly by our student leaders Captains and SRC Representatives. These last events coupled with the college's tribute float at the Myrtleford Festival, stand to remind all of us of the wonderful young men and women we have enrolled here at Marian. The respect shown, the dignity of stance and position, and the pride of representation have contributed to a great feeling of pride I have in our student body. Congratulations to all. please add a "lest we forget" pic and check my spelling and grammar Jen. Cartwright Fashions apologises for the delay in the supply of the College blazers. Ruth will phone each family as soon as they arrive. We are hoping to have the blazers within the month of May. WELCOME AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY We acknowledge the Minjambuta people, the very first custodians of this land. The history of this area goes back thousands of years when the Minjambuta people moved along the valleys and mountains and rivers from the areas around Mt. Hotham down to near where the Hume Freeway now stands. We thank them for the land they now share with us. We pledge ourselves to work with all Aboriginal people as they look for reconciliation and justice in the years to come. Kicked off the term with a hop-step & jump at the Athletics carnival & congratulations to Nagle on their victory. We represented the college at the A.D Lowerson memorial where the statue of Alby was unveiled and it looks fantastic! The ANZAC day service was inspiring, it was great to be with the community remembering those who have fought for our country. By Ryan & Maddy with help from the Year 12’s By Ryan & Maddy with help from the Year 12s Uniform & Anzac Day Uniform Changes - Policy Review 222222222222222222222222222222222222 ANZAC DAY 2015 & ALBERT LOWERSON BRONZE STATUE UNVEILING The Marian College Board fully supports the changes to the college uniform in particular the compulsory introduction of the College Blazer. As part of our role, we reviewed the Uniform Policy back in 2012 and it was decided to form a uniform sub-committee to review all parts of the uniform and our suppliers. It was also decided to include St Mary’s Primary School into the discussions, as any changes would affect their students, in particular Year 6’s. The sub-committee had representatives from both schools: Principals, Teachers, parents, students and local suppliers. The group looked at each item of clothing and discussed whether it needed to be changed, cost involved and availability. As part of this discussion it was decided to look at re-introducing a Blazer for Marian College students. Following a consultation process with both parents and students, the Board accepted all recommended changes and the inclusion of the College Blazer as a compulsory winter uniform item. The Board also approved a 2 year implementation plan (being 2015), therefore giving families plenty of time to have the correct uniform in place. We would appreciate families support of the uniform and in particular the teachers who are encouraging the students to wear the correct uniform. Thank you Oriana McCormick Marian College Board Chair. CROSTOLI MAKING WORKING BEE FOR CROSTOLI STALL FOR SCHOOL COUNTRY FAIR Helpers needed for working bee tomorrow Friday, May 1st from 3.30 to 6.30 p.m. Outdoor Education Camp & Sport UNIT 1/2 OUTDOOR EDUCATION EXCURSION It was quite an adventure for the VCE Unit 1/2 Outdoor Ed students as the embarked upon the Razorback walk last week. The wind as we stepped out onto the ridge was blowing so hard that it was difficult to walk in a straight line. What should have been a spectacular view was hindered by the low cloud and mist that surrounded us. The walk was challenging due to the 20kg packs that each student was carrying. The sight of Federation Hut brought a sigh of relief at the end of a long day. SENIOR GIRLS TENNIS HUME REGION Unfortunately the weather Gods were not kind and at about 1.30am the rain started to fall. The pack up on Friday morning could only be described as ‘soggy’. We trudged through the rain on Friday with our packs full of wet sleeping bags, tents and clothes. Some students remained in high spirits whilst others exclaimed they were having the worst day of their lives. Everyone survived though and I’m am sure when they tucked themselves into their warm beds on Friday night they would have all felt some sense of accomplishment. Winners are grinners! Congratulations to Kailtin Bonacci, Amie Antonello, Lauren Baldori and Kayla Garoni who won the Senior section of the Hume Region Tennis Competition held on Thursday, April 23rd in Wangaratta.
