MARIST COLLEGE Catholic School for Girls Term 1 - Number 7 Friday 20th March, 2015 YEARS 7 TO 13 KEY DATES FROM THE PRINCIPAL WEEK 8 (B) Dear Parents and Guardians, Resilience is the Key ‘We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future’ Franklin Roosevelt (1940) As many of you are aware the Pastoral Goal for 2015 is to provide opportunities and experiences that build resilience in all students. So far we are seeing a very positive response to this initiative throughout the school. Tutor Groups are using inspiring video clips and relevant messages to promote and raise awareness of the importance of being resilient. Senior leaders are incorporating the essential messages of bouncing back after challenges into their Assemblies and each week staff Professional Learning Development includes updates on innovative strategies which give students the necessary skills to deal with challenging situations appropriately in the classroom, developing feelings of competence, belonging, usefulness, empowerment and optimism. Everyone can learn through experience to be resilient. Parents and families are vital to the success of this initiative and to help students keep life in perspective. We have organised for parents, an informative and entertaining presentation by John Cowan who comes highly recommended. The girls took to the stage with their cultural dances and performed to a packed audience, they really were fantastic! Fortunately despite threatening to rain, the weather behaved and we had a lovely evening. This festival is organised by the PTFA in conjunction with the College and this year we are fundraising for more shade and seating for the school. The success of the Festival has enabled us to bank in excess of $13,000! All this would not be possible without the help and hard work of our dedicated parents who donated, cooked and helped on the stalls and the teaching and administrative staff and Year 13 students. The PTFA are also very grateful to Alberton 4 Square who gave so much support to make this event possible. We are also grateful to Cocacola and the ASB bank and the many volunteers who made the day a success. Thank you from the Marist College PTFA Caritas Mufti Day - Wednesday 25 March. Striving for Accuracy: Check for errors; Measure at least twice; Nurture a desire for This week’s Gospel is about God’s unconditional love for us as His exactness, fidelity and craftsmanship. children. As Christ meets with Nicodemus, he talks of God’s plan for us and He reminds us that God sent Jesus into the world, not to condemn, but to set us free from sin. As the pressures of earthly life get in the way, it is easy to forget God, but, as we make this journey over the 40 days of Lent, we are to remember that all that we do is for God. “Everybody who does wrong hates the light and avoids it, for fear his actions should be exposed; but the man who lives by the truth comes out into the light, so that it may be plainly seen that what he does is done in God.” At Marist, as we journey towards Easter, let us try to remember God in all that we do, striving to put our faith into action, as we become people of aroha, humility and compassion.
