Congregational Goals Established for Upcoming 12 Months

“Sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ”
Congregational Goals Established for
Upcoming 12 Months
Our 5 Cornerstones
By Rob Buettner, Council President
Our Council has spent time the past few
meetings discussing goals for the congregation during the next 12 months or so.
Over the past few years, we have spent a
lot of time discussing and evaluating who
we are right now as a congregation and
where we want to go. We updated our
governing documents, and we restructured
our organization in a way that we hope
can better foster growth and fulfillment of
our mission. We believe that now is the
time for us to provide some specific
direction for Martin Luther Church.
A few years ago, we established our “Five
Cornerstones.” The Cornerstones provide us
with a foundation of what it means to be a
Christian at Martin Luther Church. It also is
a reminder for all of us of the “basics” that
we try to carry out in our day-to-day lives.
You will see below the goals we created
within the framework of the “Five Cornerstones.”
Why establish goals? There are many
reasons for establishing and communicating
goals. First, it provides all of us with a
vision and direction for the congregation
over the next 12 months. It also helps
provide some accountability to our leaders,
our staff, and the congregation as a whole.
Goals help prioritize focus and resources,
as well. But the best reason to have goals
is simply that you rarely hit something you
are not aiming at.
Please review the goals, reflect, and pray
about them. If you have any questions
about them, please contact a member of
Council or Pastor Ari. We believe that we
have the talent and teamwork within the
congregation to meet and exceed these
goals. We’ll keep you up-to-date throughout the next 12 months on our progress.

Daily Acts of Faith
Martin Luther Church, as a
congregation, welcomes and
celebrates the richness and
diversity of all God’s people,
regardless of where they’ve come
from or where they are in their
life’s journey. Therefore, we follow the teaching of 2 Corinthians
5:18: “All this is from God who
reconciled us through Jesus Christ
and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.” We believe that the
good news of Jesus Christ is to be
shared by all people without regard to age, race, gender identity, sexual orientation,
socioeconomic status, or physical or mental abilities. All are welcome as
members of the Body of Christ as
workers in the kingdom of God
and at the table of our Lord.
Pastor’s Page
In the weeks after Easter, we had
several Gospel lessons taken from
the chapters of John that are known
as Jesus’ “farewell discourse.” These
are Jesus’ words to his disciples
during the Last Supper before he is
arrested and crucified, and they
speak again and again about the
connections the disciples share. “I am
the vine and you are the branches,”
Jesus says. And “Love one another
as I have loved you.” Or “May they
be one as You and I are one.”
Jesus was speaking to his closest
disciples when he said these things,
but John recorded them, and the
Church continues to teach them,
because we believe they speak to
all disciples, that Jesus was laying
the groundwork for all believers.
In saving us from sin, Jesus joins us
together and calls us to be connected in love and service. (“Love the
Lord your God… and your neighbor
as yourself.”) As one of my mentors
was fond of saying, “Faith is personal, but it isn’t individualistic.”
Our connections to others in the
church are central to our identity as
Christians. It’s why we made “Build
Loving Relationships” one of our
5 Cornerstones at MLC (along with
Engage the Bible, Grow in Worship,
Give in Service, and Daily Acts of
Faith). It’s something we’ve all known
at some level (or heard repeated in
passages like those above) but now
experience, and science is bearing
out just how important our connections can be.
Active members of churches frequently cite the relationships at
church as key to them staying active.
We know that people who feel
welcomed within minutes of entering
a church are much more likely to
return. Similarly, the number of
caring relationships new members
create within six months of joining
has a direct correlation on whether
they remain active participants.
Multiple studies show that kids who
have at least five adults (other than
their parents) who interact with them
authentically and regularly are
significantly more likely to identify
as Christian and attend church in
their twenties. We know that churches are one of the last places in our
society where people from different
economic, political, and cultural
backgrounds come together on a
regular basis and that those interactions often lead to healthier societies.
Just as God wants to be in a loving
relationship with each of us, we have
an inner need to be in loving relationships with others. The Bible tells
us those two things are connected:
in knowing God, we are drawn to
love others, and in loving others, we
come to know God.
What are ways you can build connections this summer (in the church or
out of it)? Is there an old relationship
that could use some attention? Is
there someone you aren’t close to
that you still admire or appreciate?
Take the time to tell them. In conversations, try asking questions that go
beyond small talk to learn what
people are passionate about.
Swallow your pride and tell someone, “I know I should know your
name, but…” Take a chance and
share something personal about
yourself that not everyone knows.
If you’re worried about someone,
call or visit them.
Jesus tells his disciples again and
again to be connected to God and
to each other. In building loving relationships, we are doing the work of
God and we reflect the image of
heaven on Earth from Revelation,
where all the people are drawn
together by Jesus, united in loving
God.
In God’s Amazing Grace,
Pastor Ari

Cross+Generational Faith Adventure 2015: Everyday Superheroes!
Tuesday-Thursday, July 7-9, 5:30-8pm
Families of all kinds - couples with kids or grandkids, couples (young or old) without kids, singles (young or old), cousins,
godparents, friends - are invited to Cross+Generational Faith Adventure (formerly VBS) on Tuesday, July 7, through Thursday,
July 9, from 5:30-8pm.
Ordinary people do extraordinary things every day, and YOU are one of them! Join us as we learn about the superpowers
Jesus Christ gives all of us. Each evening begins with dinner! Then, have fun learning about Jesus, making capes, posing in the
photo booth, climbing through Spiderman's webs, and more!
Register online at http://tinyurl.com/everydayheros or at the CGFA table in the narthex. The registration fee is $10/individual
or $20/family. Please mail checks to Martin Luther Lutheran Church, 9235 W Bluemound Rd, Milwaukee WI 53226. Please put
"CGFA" in the memo line. We never want a fee to keep anyone from participating. Scholarships are available! Please contact
Pastor Ari at [email protected] regarding scholarships.
Even if you can't attend, you can still be involved; CGFA needs your help! We are collecting new or clean, gently used L and XL
T-shirts. We are also collecting nonperishable food items. We are making something special with the T-shirts, and the food will
go to one of Martin Luther Church's outreach ministries. Please place your donations in the bin at the CGFA table in the narthex.
Thank you!
If you have questions about Everyday Superheroes or registration, please contact Kate Mattson at [email protected].
"We want YOU!" by Lani Knutson
"The closest our research has come to that definitive silver bullet is this sticky finding: high school and college students who
experience more intergenerational worship tend to have high faith maturity." (Powell, et al, Sticky Faith, 2011).
"When adults in the congregation show an interest in young people and build relationships with them, young people feel
welcomed and valued . . . and this influence continues into the college years." (Powell, et al, Sticky Faith, 2011).
Recently, Pastor Ari and I attended a conference called "Do What Matters," sponsored by Vibrant Faith (vibrantfaith.org). At this
conference, we had the opportunity to learn about and explore ideas on how to build faith in people of all ages in our church.
Being the leader of Christian Formation at MLC, the two quotes above jumped out at me immediately.
Many churches are plagued with the issue of teenagers disappearing after they are confirmed, never to be seen again at
church. It was an issue when I was a kid, and with all the activities pulling students in multiple directions today, we haven't seen
the last of it. Certainly MLC is not exempted from this occurrence. So how does a small church like Martin Luther, which will never
have the draw of a 100-member youth group, prevent this from happening? The answer: relationships. Kids need concerned
people of all ages (including people who aren't related to them by blood) interacting with them, asking them about their life,
encouraging them in their struggles, and surrounding them with love.
Isn't this really what we all need? In my experience, my faith is much stronger now as an adult when I am an active part of a
faith community in which people truly care about me and who I am. These truths are why we choose to be a Cross+Generational
congregation and why we want you to be involved in Cross+Generational activities. Your faith will grow and the faith of people
around you will grow. Please join us in building faith in our children and in each other!
Kudos to Erik Solie, Jacob Burks, and Sawyer Fox, who were confirmed on Sunday, May 10, during the 10:30am worship
service!
Our 65th Anniversary – A Day to Remember!
Reflections of Our 65th Anniversary
April 19th ... What a glorious day! That Sunday, we celebrated our 65th anniversary of being the Martin Luther Church congregation. We had one worship service filled with members, past members, and visitors. The anniversary choir sang 45 voices strong
and the sound filled the sanctuary. The potluck luncheon was filled with delicious dishes to choose from, of course. Our program
was hosted by Tim Knutson, and we heard from Jerry Smeiska, our church historian extraordinaire! Samantha Hoppe serenaded
us with her original song for the occasion, and several letters were read from our previous pastors with words of congratulations
and well wishes for the future. Our "Pass It On" fundraiser for Reformation Lutheran Church's Safe Sleep Program surpassed our
$2,500 goal by reaching $3,500, thanks to our generous givers.
Thanks to everyone who made this day a glorious day of celebration! Now, on to the next many years of ministry...
Mary Meyer
An Anniversary Choir Reflection
A Sampling of Phone Calls & Messages I Received Prior to the Worship Service:
Delighted to receive the invitation to sing *** Wouldn't miss it *** So sorry to miss ... give those
wonderful choir folks my best *** I'm in ... so excited *** Would love to participate *** Thank you
for reaching out *** Sorry I can't join you all *** Thanks for the invitation *** Can't be there on
Sunday, but can I come to the Thursday rehearsal? *** So excited to get your letter *** Greetings to
everyone there, sorry I can't be a part *** Of course we would love to join in the fun
Often think about our choir anthems we learned so well and then those shivers when sung from the heart
Delighted to be a part of the singing *** Sure do appreciate being included ***
Count me in *** You know I'll be there
A Sampling of Notes and Messages I Received Following the Worship Service:
Choir was awesome *** So enjoyed raising our voices with gladness and rejoicing *** Spirit-inspired
My cup is overflowing *** Music choices were wonderful *** Amazing and overwhelming all in one
So grateful to have been a part of it *** Uplifting *** Holy Spirit bound us together in song
Such a good thing *** Wonderful reunion sing *** Inspirational *** The Holy Spirit was present
I am so glad I agreed to be a part *** Can't get "Fairest Lord Jesus" out of my head
Thanks for the stroll down memory lane *** Thank You *** We need to do something like this again
*** Reconnected my heart and soul to heaven *** WOW
My own personal reflection?! I can only add that it was an extreme honor and unbelievable joy to
serve as director of our 65th" Anniversary Choir! Those participants know how much admiration,
respect, thankfulness, and love I hold in my heart for each one of them!
Continue to Always Sing for Joy!

Ministries at MLC
Ever Wanted to Preach?
Because Martin Luther is a congregation that values the participation
of many people in worship, Pastor
Ari and council have set a goal of
creating a lay preaching team by
this fall. The team would enrich the
congregation by adding voices to
share the Gospel and give those
who are interested the chance to
deepen their faith by digging into
the Word of God and sharing it with
others. Those who are interested will
receive training on how to read the
texts and prepare a sermon, and
would get to preach one to three
times per year, depending on the
size of the group. Please contact
Pastor Ari if you are interested.
Our Offerings at Work
In April, our synod set aside Sunday,
the 26th, as Campus Ministry Day to
raise awareness of Lutheran Campus
Ministries at Marquette & UW Milwaukee (lcm.milwaukeesynod.org).
We were lucky to have Pastor
Rachel Young Binter from UWM
come share a temple talk with us
about her experiences working with
students in a transitional time of life.
Around the same time, a devastating
earthquake hit Nepal, killing hundreds and leaving thousands injured
or homeless. Within days, Lutheran
Disaster Response was delivering
half a million dollars in aid to those
in need.
You may not have known these
ministries were happening, but if you
give to Martin Luther Church, you
were already a part of them.
Because we are a part of a national
church that we support, some of your
dollars are mentoring students in
Milwaukee and feeding people in
Nepal. The money that goes in our
offering plates doesn’t just “pay the
bills;” it changes lives. Thank you.
What’s Council Been Up To?
Council has been working for over a
year to revamp our leadership structure in order to increase the number
of people involved in doing ministry
at Martin Luther Church and to
streamline decision-making that
might otherwise bottleneck in council
or the pastor’s desk. To that end,
we’ve created a team of ministry
leaders that oversee and coordinate
the ministries of the church.
If you want to know more about a
ministry area, get involved in a particular ministry, or work on building
something new, these ministry leaders are the point people whom you
should contact. Some ministries (such
as Christian Formation or Communication) work with a team of people
on a regular basis, while others (like
Church Home or Christian Care)
work more as a hub of information
for activities in their area. With all
of the ministries, the goal remains
what it has always been: to connect
people’s interests and skills with the
ministries of the church as efficiently
as possible for the sake of the
Gospel. We know that more and
more people find it hard to make an
open-ended commitment to a
committee, and many prefer to jump
into doing a specific ministry as
quickly as possible. This update to
our structure is an attempt to
acknowledge those realities.

New Bible Study Opportunity on
Wednesdays
Martin Luther is hosting a new Bible
study during the day, starting June
3. Pastor Steve Kuhl from St. Mark’s
Episcopal in South Milwaukee has
offered to teach a weekly study of
the scriptures using the Crossings
method that seeks to “cross” our
daily lives with the Law and Gospel
of God’s Word, connecting readings
to our living. This study is open to the
whole community, so invite friends,
and pass along the information.
We will meet on Wednesdays at
9am in the Conference Room.
Contact Pastor Ari for more info.
MLC's Christian Care Ministry
MLC has a rich (almost 65-year)
history among its membership. Many
of our members are now homebound
and elderly and cannot be a part of
our active church life, even though
they wish they could be. We cannot
and should not forget these pillars of
MLC and what they did for our
church. This is why we are organizing
the Christian Care Ministry team.
We need YOU to serve on this team,
even if it's just in a small way.
If you would like to be a part of
MLC's Christian Care Ministry team
in any way, BIG or small, we welcome you and thank you for caring!
Please call Darlene Freels at 262628-2627 or contact Pastor Ari to
volunteer.

Pastor Weeden's Study Groups
A couple months of meaningful dialogue with the men’s and women’s study groups began over the issue of the traditional summer
break and a questioning of that ridiculous idea of "because this is the way we've always done it!" We ended-up looking at the
"bigger picture," including the "holiday madness" period, Wisconsin winter weather and darkness, and an idea that came from
both groups: a combined session!
The Women's Group will continue to meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm; however, there will be no meetings in
July, November, or December.
The Men's Group will now meet at 6:30pm on the fourth Tuesday of every month except July, November, and December.
In February, there will be a meeting with both groups coming together on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon to discuss a special
topic, such as prayer, Holy Communion, etc.
From Pastor Richard Weeden: "Thank you, everyone, for your input and creative thinking. I'm blessed to be a part of this and
among you wonderful people!"
2015 Tri-Fecta Church Picnic
On Sunday, June 7, at 11:30am, our fellowship hall tables will be set for the 2015 Tri-Fecta Church Picnic for Martin Luther,
Milwaukee Mennonite, and St. Therese members and guests. Cannon Park was already booked with another group for this date,
so we will be donating the $250 Cannon Park rental fee to Tosa Cares, which collects nonperishable food items, personal care
items, clothing and school supplies for families in need, in the amounts of $125 from MLC, $75 from St. Therese, and $50 from
MMC. Picnic attendees are encouraged to bring donations for Tosa Cares to the picnic, along with a potluck picnic-type food
item to complement our cookout, and a donation for a freewill offering to help underwrite meat and beverage costs.
MLC will provide grilling meats (burgers, hot dogs, brats), all the fixings, paper plates, forks, spoons, knives, napkins, cups and
beverages. St. Therese will provide buns and children's gift bags, and MMC will coordinate children's games. Please see the
picnic display in the narthex, and sign up on the Tri-Fecta Church Picnic sign-up sheet with a count of adults and children.
(St. Therese will also have a sign-up sheet to help us plan accordingly.)
Landscaping Help and Ideas Wanted!
Interested in planning and implementing landscaping ideas around the church? We can use your help! We're looking for people
interested in being on a Landscaping Task Force. This is a short-term project to formulate landscaping ideas and put them into
place. If interested, please call Mary Felkner at 262.814.1940 or email her at [email protected].
The MLC Book Group may be meeting in August. For details, please email Katy Almond at [email protected].
Sing, Sing, Sing!
Have you ever wanted to sing in the choir but you don’t read music? Or have you ever wondered why a hymn has a title, hymn
tune, and a metrical meter? If so, please join us in the Green Room on Wednesday, July 22, at 7pm for an evening of learning
basic music theory and a bit of hymn-reading!
Worship Planning Workshop
Join us as we map out worship plans for fall & winter, review spring, and discuss other worship-related topics. We will gather
for about two hours after worship on June 28 (at about 11:00). Everyone interested in worship is welcome to join us! Lunch will
be provided, so please RSVP to Deanna Ingrelli at [email protected]/262-695-0483 so we have enough.
NEWS FROM TOSA CARES
Thank you to all for your continued support of Tosa Cares and your contributions to the Tosa Cares Food Pantry. In addition to
food, Tosa Cares is able to offer clothing, school supplies, personal care supplies, chiropractic care, eye exams and glasses,
blood pressure checks, and other additional support to families in need. You can find out more about Tosa Cares on their web
site: www.tosacares.org.
The next distribution will be Saturday, June 20, at Mt. Zion Church, 12012 W North Ave, Wauwatosa. If you can help pack and
distribute food for a couple of hours that morning starting at 8:30, your help would be greatly appreciated. There’s also a Tosa
Cares barrel set up in the narthex at Martin Luther for food contributions.
Future food distributions in 2015 are scheduled for August 8, October 3, and November 21.
