Meals on Wheels Tasmania have been providing meals to Tasmanians for more
than 60 years. With winter upon us it’s a timely reminder that many members of
our community cannot easily access a nutritional daily meal. That’s where Meals
on Wheels gives thousands of Tasmanian family’s peace of mind in knowing that
their loved ones are being visited regularly by one of the organisations friendly
volunteers. The service provided by Meals on Wheels also assists in helping the
aged and those with disabilities stay in their homes longer.
This week, Meals on Wheels Tasmania, delivered their millionth meal from the
Uniting Aged Well facility at Strathaven to recent convert Pauline Buckby of New
Town. The 92 year old well known author was a reluctant recipient at first, having
also enjoyed a time in the hospitality industry, owning and operating some of
Hobart’s prominent pubs.
‘I have always loved to cook and it took a lot of convincing for me throw in the
apron, but I’m so pleased I did. I enjoy the meals very much and the visit from
Meals on Wheels volunteers is always a highlight in my day’ Mrs Buckby said.

Farewell to Jen
Devonport Break-in (the good and the bad )
Wednesday 13th May 2015 at the volunteers high tea at
West Winds Community Centre was the official
retirement of Jen Pickett who has for many years been
the driving force behind Meals on Wheels in the South
Channel. Jen was ably assisted by a wonderful group of
volunteers who have kept the recipients with both hot
and frozen meals, she will be missed.
Channel MOW has now officially closed its doors at West
Winds and will now be integrated into Huon & Channel
being serviced out of Huonville.
Everything including the bathroom sink— That’s
what the offenders were after when they broke into
our Devonport depot over the weekend ending 31st
May. Staff returned to work on the Monday
morning to find the bathroom vanity dragged into
the corridor, with the sink and taps removed and
the heat pump half torn from the wall. Also taken
from the premises were meals, toilet paper, plastic
cutlery, cleaning products, tomato sauce, coffee and
tea, an electric kettle and microwave oven. In true
Meals on Wheels fashion our wonderful staff and
volunteers still got all meals out to their clients on
time. We are lucky to have such dedicated people
as a part of our organisation. While this burglary
shows us some of the down-sides of life, it also
shows us the positive and good sides. Devonport
Meals on Wheels have since had donations of cash
from a local politician, a local real estate agent,
recipients and other members of the community, a
cleaning company has donated cleaning products
and toilet paper and other offers are still coming in.
It is wonderful to see such a community spirit still
exists.
Meals on Wheels would like to thank Staff,
Volunteers, recipients and members of the
community for all the support they have given us
