CME Centre for Medical Education FACE-TO-FACE TEACHING TIMETABLE FROM 5 1 0 2 Y L JU CLINICAL SKILLS & SIMULATION RESEARCH IN MEDICAL EDUCATION Monday 6 – Friday 10 July 2015 Monday 11th – Friday 15th January 2016 TEACHING & LEARNING ASSESSING KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ATTITUDES th th The aim of this module is to introduce participants to the role of simulation in the development of consistent clinical skills practice, and will consider the application of educational theory to simulation in medical education. This module will develop participants knowledge and skills in using simulation as a facilitator and in developing a programme of clinical skills education. [Optional] The aim of this module is to introduce participants to mixed methods, qualitative and quantitative research in medical education, including generic issues such as ethics, use of theory and quality in research. This module builds on basic scholarship principles learned across previous core and optional modules and prepares students for independent medical education research. [Masters core] Monday 14 – Friday 18 September 2015 Monday 8th – Friday 12th February 2016 PRINCIPLES OF ASSESSMENT E-LEARNING th th This module introduces participants to the major pedagogic theories and different teaching approaches including large group, small group, role play and facilitation. Participants reflect on their own learning and teaching conceptions, and critique current learning style theories. Taxonomies for skills, attitudes and knowledge are applied to lesson planning, and a variety of tools for measuring educational environment and teacher development are explored. [Certificate core] Monday 12 – Friday 16 October 2015 th th This module introduces the student to the characteristics of good assessment, the idea of educational outcomes, content analysis, summative assessment and formative assessment, criterion and norm-referenced assessment, validity and reliability, standard setting, self and peer assessment, giving and receiving feedback. [Certificate core] CURRICULUM PLANNING Monday 2nd – Friday 6th November 2015 This module provides students with theoretical and empirical bases for planning and designing curricula for smaller educational units such as modules or courses, or larger programmes. It will be helpful for health professional educators who are involved in course development at various levels. [Diploma core] MANAGEMENT & LEADERSHIP Monday 30th November – Friday 4th December 2015 This module aims to help students understand management and leadership theory and reflect critically on the application of that theory to their own management and leadership roles within medical education. [Diploma core] This module will introduce students to a range of methods available for assessing Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes. As well as describing these instruments and showing how they may be used effectively the module will look at key issues relating to validity and reliability. At the end of this module students should be able to choose an appropriate assessment method taking account of what they are expected to have learnt and also why they have learned it. (Optional) Monday 29th February – Friday 4th March 2016 In this module students critically reflect on e-learning situated in a variety of contexts and from various stakeholders’ viewpoints. Legalities and ethics are introduced, with case studies presented on social networking and discussion boards. Students are introduced to a variety of e-learning tools, and study the design processes, including pegagogical underpinning, encouraging stakeholder engagement and evaluation. [Optional] EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT Monday 28th March – Friday 1st April 2016 This module aims to develop students’ understanding of support systems including supervision, mentoring and undergraduate support in a variety of contexts and to design a support system for their own context, identifying potential barriers and solutions. [Optional] REGULATIONS • Open to all current Distance Learning students. • Distance Learning students MUST have completed the online Induction module prior to attendance. • Distance Learning students will be required to pay an additional £200 for the one week of intensive teaching. • It is strongly recommended that students complete ‘Teaching & Learning’, and ‘Principles of Assessment’ prior to attending any of the Diploma Core and/or Optional Modules.
