THANKSGIVING
The word “thanksgiving” most often calls to our mind the holiday in November. But as early as the middle of
the second century Justin Martyr referred to the blessed bread and wine of the Lord’s Supper as “food we call
‘thanksgiving’ ” (in Greek eucharistia). The Thanksgiving we celebrate in the autumn is at times marked by a sort
of proud societal self congratulation and the consumption of food until we sink into an inert stupor. The
“thanksgiving” that we call our Eucharist is just the opposite: we are led to it by an acknowledgment of our own
failings; we remember our humble place in the scheme of things by giving praise to God alone.
While the food of Christ’s body and blood fills our spiritual hungers, it also creates in us a greater hunger. We
are not sent to our spiritual sofas to let the Lord’s Supper settle; we are sent to be living signs of that thanksgiving
for the world by looking out for the poor and powerless, feeding the hungry, caring for the sick, speaking out
against the self-righteous. In short, the hunger created by our doing in remembrance of Christ must lead us to living
in remembrance of him.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
It has been said that the Church breathes with two lungs, East and West. Some of our family treasures are in the
East, and it is interesting to consider how liturgical families developed around differing customs. Centuries before
Christ, after the young girl was given to her husband by her father, the spouses were crowned. Christians retained
that custom, keeping the wedding in the home, and sometimes inviting a visiting priest or bishop to put the crowns
on their heads. By the fourth century, the crowns were seen not as royal crowns, but as the crowns of victory worn
by martyrs. The crowns have nothing to do with being “king and queen for a day,” but rather speak of the sacrifice
of love poured out fully. There are no vows exchanged at all, but the crowning is followed by a joyful dance by the
priest and couple around the Gospel book. Unlike Roman law, which saw the wedding rites as optional, Eastern
practice did not recognize a marriage that had not been blessed.

ACCIÓN DE GRACIAS
El Día de Acción de Gracias que celebramos en el otoño a veces se ve marcado por una especie de orgullo y
autofelicitación por parte de nuestra sociedad, por no hablar de comilonas que nos llevan hasta el estupor. Pero la
“acción de gracias” que en griego se llama “Eucaristía” es al revés: lo que nos lleva a ella es el reconocimiento de
nuestras faltas; recordamos nuestra posición humilde en el universo alabando a Dios, y a nadie más que a Dios.
Es verdad que el alimento del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo sacia el hambre de nuestro espíritu, pero también es
verdad que ese alimento crea en nosotros un hambre más intensa aun. Al terminar la Misa no nos envían a un sofá
espiritual a sentarnos en lo que la Cena del Señor se nos asienta en el estómago; más bien, nos envían al mundo a ser
signos vivientes de esa Acción de Gracias, ayudando a los pobres y desvalidos, alimentando a los hambrientos,
cuidando a los enfermos, protestando contra las actitudes farisaicas. En fin, el hambre producida en nosotros al hacer
el Memorial de Jesús nos tiene que impulsar a vivir “en memoria de él”.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
“Altísimo Señor”, un bellísimo himno tradicional canta con asombro y maravilla la humildad de Jesucristo quien
siendo divino no sólo murió por nosotros sino que también se hace nuestro manjar en un pedacito de pan. Nos invita
al “convite de amor” para “amar y recibir a quien por mí, quiso morir”.
Esta espiritualidad eucarística es buena, pero sería aún mejor recordar que el cordero divino no murió sólo por
mí, sino por “nosotros”. El cristiano es cristiano en la medida que se relaciona en la Iglesia, la gran familia de Dios.
El Cuerpo de Cristo se forma no sólo de granos de trigo sino de hombres y mujeres bautizadas. Su cuerpo no se
encuentra sólo en un altar sino en los cristianos unidos para la misa. El cuerpo de Cristo está en la hostia pero
también se encuentra en todo creyente. Abre los ojos y, con asombro y maravilla, verás a Jesucristo en nuestra unión
de fe. Jesús está tan presente en la Iglesia como en sus tabernáculos y sagrarios. Juntos somos el pan de la vida que
da gracia y virtud, alegría y salud.

Someone has suggested that if Jesus were to send his twelve disciples for psychological testing today he might receive this
reply: “Thank you for submitting the résumés of the twelve men you have picked for managerial positions in your new
organization. All of them have taken our complete battery of tests. In addition, we arranged personality interviews for each of
your candidates with our psychologists and vocational aptitude consultants. It is the opinion of our staff that most of your
nominees are lacking in the background, education, and skills necessary for the success of your enterprise. None of them shows
an understanding of the team concept. Simon Peter is impulsive and would benefit from anger-management counseling.
Andrew has no measureable leadership qualities. The two brothers, James and John, place personal ambition above company
loyalty. Thomas shows a skeptical attitude that would tend to undermine morale. In his previous business, Matthew was
blacklisted by the Jerusalem Better Business Bureau. James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus definitely have radical political
leanings, and appear to have unstable temperaments. One of the candidates, however, shows real potential. He is a man of
ability and resourcefulness, possesses excellent social skills, and has contacts in high places. He is highly motivated, ambitious,
and responsible. We recommend Judas Iscariot as your comptroller and right-hand man.” Today Jesus calls us. Like Peter, we
lack faith. Like Andrew, we have much to learn. Like James and John, we are selfish. Like Matthew, we have a past. Like
Thomas, we sometimes doubt. If Jesus could use
them, he can certainly use us. With God’s help, we
too can grow from strength to strength and
accomplish great things for God and the Kingdom.
The call to follow Jesus is urgent. Answer now.

Alguien ha opinado que si Jesús mandara a sus
doce discípulos a hacerse una prueba sicológica
hoy día el reporte sobre el resultado diría de esta
manera: “Gracias por proporcionarnos el
curriculum vitae de los doce hombres que usted ha
escogido para puestos empresariales en su nueva
organización. Todos han pasado por nuestras
pruebas completas e intensas. Además, fueron
programadas entrevistas con cada uno de sus
candidatos por nuestros sicólogos y consultores de
aptitudes vocacionales. Después de todas estas
pruebas la opinión de nuestro personal es que la
mayoría de sus candidatos carecen de la
experiencia, la educación y las habilidades
necesarias para el éxito de su empresa. Ninguno de ellos entiende el concepto de equipo. Simón Pedro es impulsivo y una
consejería sobre el manejo de su ira le vendría muy bien. Andrés no tiene ninguna cualidad de liderazgo que se pueda apreciar.
Santiago y Juan, los dos hermanos, ponen su ambición personal antes de la fidelidad a la compañía. Tomás demuestra una
actitud escéptica que tiende a menoscabar la moral. En su negocio previo a Mateo lo pusieron en la lista negra del Buró de
Empresas Responsables de Jerusalén. Santiago, el hijo del Alfeo, y Tadeo definitivamente tienen inclinaciones políticas bien
radicales, y además sus temperamentos parecen inestables. Sin embargo, uno de los candidatos muestra verdaderas
posibilidades. Es un hombre con habilidades y emprendedor, posee excelentes aptitudes sociales y tiene buenos contactos en
lugares de influencia. Está bien motivado, es ambicioso y responsable. Nosotros recomendamos a Judas Iscariote para ocupar el
puesto de auditor y que sea su mano derecha en la empresa”. Hoy Jesús nos llama a nosotros. Como Pedro no tenemos fe.
Como Andrés tenemos mucho que aprender. Como Santiago y Juan somos egoístas. Como Mateo tenemos un pasado. Como
Tomás muchas veces dudamos. Si Jesús pudo utilizarlos a ellos, ciertamente puede utilizarnos a nosotros. Con la ayuda de Dios
también nosotros podemos ir fortaleciéndonos más y más, y llegar a lograr grandes cosas para Dios y su Reino. El llamado que
te hace Jesús para seguirlo es urgente. Responde ahora.
