No MSing Around for this Family!
Sal (holding sign) with his team at the Kamloops
Scotiabank MS Walk.
In 2014, 24-year-old Sal Salvaggio
raised $11,000 dollars for the
Scotiabank MS Walk in Kamloops
and became the first person in the
city to qualify for the National MS
Walk of Champions to be held in
Dallas, Texas in April 2015.
Salvaggio was diagnosed with
relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis
only one year earlier, at age 23.
At the time, he was studying at
Thompson River University, but was
IN THIS ISSUE
forced to take a break
from school when his
symptoms affected his
ability to write and type.

Salvaggio is the cocaptain of his team,
No MSing Around, with
his cousin, Michelle
Marinelli. “I wouldn’t be
able to do it without her.”
Salvaggio said, “Just seeing the
smiles of all the people clapping and
cheering and making a difference
for cause that you’re a part of and
that affects you is definitely the
number one thing. My goal is to try
and reach $10,000 every year...the
most rewarding part is knowing that
you did a really good job and you
made an impact.”

TeamMS makes it easy
Year after year, thousands of
participants take the TeamMS
challenge to walk on behalf
of the MS Society of Canada.
Bringing communities and
corporations together, the
TeamMS experience motivates,
inspires, and challenges
participants to achieve their goals
while helping to end MS.
Groups of 4 or more, including
one team captain, qualify to form
either a community or corporate
team.
Create Your Team
It’s easy. Pick a team captain, a
team name, and register your
team online at mswalks.ca.

Team Captain Duties
• Recruit friends, co-workers
and/or business associates
to participate as members
of your team.
• Register online and create
your own team website.

of your team members to
join online too!
The MS Society’s
Equipment Provision

enhances quality of life
by providing mobility
or home care aids to
people in need.
• Plan a team-building
kick-off and invite new
and veteran walkers.
Gather potential team
members together for an
information session over
lunch.
Find out more about registering

or ask about an “earlypledge drop-off” date for
your event.
“The ankle-foot braces will
make life better for me as I will
not be afraid of tripping and
falling over my feet as I have
done for some time now. The
braces do what my ankles and
dorsiflexor can’t do anymore.
Thank you from the bottom of
my heart! I don’t know what
I would do without the MS
Society. You are able to provide
a great wealth of information
and help where and when
needed.
I may have MS, but it does not
have me!”

Register online at mswalks.ca
and make fundraising easy! Set
your goals and create a personal
fundraising page. Visit your
Participant Centre to tell your story,
request donations and to track your
progress. Your friends and family can
donate from anywhere in the world
and asking is just a click away.
Ask family and friends first. Once
you’ve tackled the “easy ones,”
branching out is simple. Ask clients,
colleagues, suppliers, anyone and
everyone. Make a list of places
where you spend money; don’t
forget about doctors, dry cleaners,
mechanics and your favourite
restaurants.
Be committed
Set a goal
Make the first pledge yourself! When
your friends, family and colleagues
see your name and contribution,
they will recognize how serious
you are. Try using your donation
as an example of the amount you
encourage others to donate.
Set individual and team fundraising
goals and make them public!
Challenge your team to be the Top
Fundraising Team or Team with the
Highest Pledge Average. Track and
share your progress with current
and potential donors. Many people
will donate a little bit more if they
know you’re close to your goal, while
others can help to remind you of
your goal.

DID YOU KNOW?
The MS Society of
Canada is the single
largest funder of MS
Research in Canada.
Each year the MS Society
funds approximately $10
million in research to support
studies that investigate all
aspects of MS both biological
and clinical.
Be prepared to tell donors about
MS and how their pledges are put
to good use. Consider your timing
when asking (i.e. ask for donations
on or after pay day).

INVESTIGATORS
Kaarina Kowalec, a Ph.D. candidate
at UBC, is looking at MS patients who
have experienced adverse reactions to
drugs used to treat MS. She hopes to
learn if there are genetic reasons for
such reactions. This knowledge can help
people make more informed decisions
when considering drug therapies.
