SPECIAL EVENTS
On the ropes DIVISION TENNIS
Congratulations to Mineth, Sean and Ella for making it through to the
Division Tennis Championships last week. Ella and Sean won overall
and will now progress through to the Regional Tennis Championships.
An outstanding effort. Good luck for the next round.
REGIONAL SSV CRICKET
Congratulations to Dulith for making it through to the
Regional SSV Cricket trials. All the best for the next
stage of selection.
Prep E Gardening
Now that the picnic place has the shade sails up, Prep E thought it was time to pretty the
area up a bit. We propagated some seeds earlier this term and this week we planted them
in rainbow shape planter boxes. We have been watering them and watching them carefully.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
NAPLAN
Next week NAPLAN will be administered by
classroom teachers for Years 3 and 5.
NAPLAN results provide invaluable data for
the state and national education system.
Individual student NAPLAN results may
also be of some benefit for teachers,
parents and students to support daily/weekly classroom
assessments.
Although NAPLAN may provide some benefit for teachers
and students, it is important for students not to place too
much emphasis on these tests and develop undue stress.
Please keep interruptions to a minimum next week to
enable these tests to be administered effectively.
SRI
Mount Waverley Primary School has been approached by a
number of accredited religious organisations and, as
mandated by the State Government, we must give full
consideration to the possibility of allowing these programs
to take place at our school.
We are currently in the process of collecting information
from all of the notices that have been returned and will
consider which programs can be resourced for our various
year levels.
I reiterate that all SRI programs are ‘opt in’, have no
relationship with AusVels curriculum and are delivered by
volunteers, not teachers, at a time of the day which
classroom teachers and I deem suitable.

Walk Safely to School Day
Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual,
national event when all Primary School children will
be encouraged to walk and commute safely to
school. Walking to school promotes Road Safety,
Health, Public Transport and the Environment.
It will be held throughout Australia on Friday 22
May 2015
The objectives of WSTSD are:
 To encourage parents and carers to walk to
school with primary school age children and reinforce
safe pedestrian behaviour.
 To promote the health benefits of walking and
help create regular walking habits at an early age.
 To ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an
adult's hand when crossing the road.
 To help children develop the vital road-crossing
skills they will need as they become mature
pedestrians.
 To reduce the car dependency habits that are
being created at an early age and which will be
difficult to change as children become adults.
 To promote the use of Public Transport.
 To reduce the level of air pollution created by
motor vehicles.

SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT UPDATE
SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT UPDATE
MWPS CONTINUES TO SUPPORT EARTH HOUR
We supported this program at
school again on Friday, May 1st
by switching off all of the lights
in the school and any unnecessary electrical equipment in each
classroom for one hour between
2.30 and 3.30pm.
Classes dedicated an hour to doing an activity that highlighted
the necessity of giving the planet
“a break” for one hour.

GENERAL INFORMATION
SRI ISLAMIC INSTRUCTIONS
Hi, I’m Earnest and
I care about the
environment.
Pay attention to
how you use water
at home and
school. The little
things make a big
difference to the
environment .
.
Due to the limited number of enrolments, SRI Islamic
Instruction will not be offered at present. If you would like
your child/children to participate in SRI Islamic Instructions
please collect a Parent Consent Form from the Office or
download the form from the school’s website and return
the completed form to school.
If there is an increase in students registering, Arkan Toledo,
the Islamic SRI Program provider, will re-consider running
the program in 2015.
WWF(World Wildlife Fund) is inviting Australians to walk, bounce or hop back into the wildlife spirit this
June, with the much-anticipated return of Wild Onesie Week 2015. WWF is challenging Australians to
head off to work and school and go about their day dressed head-to-toe as an animal during WILD ONESIE
WEEK (which includes World Environment Day on June 5). MWPS Senior Environment Team is challenging
our school to participate in this event by holding a WILD ONESIE DAY on FRIDAY 5 TH JUNE. Students are
asked to dress in a wild onesies, or dress like an animal, or wear their favourite pjs on the day. A GOLD
COIN donation is requested. The funds raised will go towards our sponsored animals (which include koalas, a bilby, an orang-utan, a Tasmanian devil and a now critically endangered Leadbeater’s possum.) See
our sponsored animals page on the Sustainability Blog
http://sustainabilityatmwps.global2.vic.edu.au/our-animals/ for more
details of our animals.

COOKBOOK UPDATE.....
1. LAST CHANCE TO SUBMIT RECIPES!
If you've been meaning to submit a recipe into the MWPS Cookbook then now is your last chance as we need to get
on with the editing and formatting of our book to get it to the printers on time.
We specifically need a few more lunch and breakfast recipes and a few more Chinese, Indian, Sri Lankan, Greek,
Malaysian, Indonesian and Korean recipes. Our Grade 6 students have done some research on these cultures and the
food they eat and identified some key dishes that we'd love to have (THANKS Grade 6 students!!).
Do you have any good recipes for the following dishes?
China - fried rice, peking duck,Korea - Yubu Chobap, Dakdoritang,India - an Indian curry dish (vindaloo, korma, butter
chicken?), bread, Samosas, Raita, Roti,,Malaysia - Nasi Lemak, a Malaysia Laksa,Sri Lanka - Biryani, a Sri Lankan curry
Indonesia - Nasi goreng, Ayam Baka, Greek - Moussaka, Spanakopita, Calamari
To submit your recipe go to
www.createacookbook.com.au
Click on the “Submit recipe” tab near the top of the screen. This will take you to a page where you can select Mount
Waverley Primary School in the drop down box. Once you have selected our school simply click on the ‘click to access
recipe form’ tab and follow all the prompts.
Before submitting your recipe - please check out the list of recipes we have already received. You can access the
recipe list by logging into Compass (see the link under ‘MWPS Cookbook’ in the ‘News’ section) or going onto the
MWPS website (go into www.mountwaverleyps.vic.edu.au and click on the ‘MWPS Cookbook recipes’ link under the
Forms section on the left hand side).
2. TEACHING THE ART OF GIVING
Here at MWPS we recognize that we are a fortunate school and that we live in a wonderful community here in Mount
Waverley. One of the values we see as important at MWPS is to be charitable to others and therefore the school has
decided to donate 5% of the profits from the sale of our Cookbook to local charities to help those who need an extra
hand. We asked our students - via the Junior School Council - to make the decision on which local charity or charities
to make our donation to and they have decided to split the donation equally to the following 3 charities:
· Ronald McDonald House Monash - Ronald McDonald House Monash works to enhance the quality of life for families
with sick children by providing a home-away-from-home that is welcoming, caring and supportive. Since opening in
1993 we have helped over 9,000 families who have needed to travel to care for their sick child at Monash Children’s
Hospital (located in Clayton).
· bestchance Child Family Care - bestchance is a not for profit organisation whose programs assist children with
learning difficulties, mums experiencing post-natal depression or isolated from family support, disadvantaged adults
requiring retraining to secure employment, young children with social, emotional and behavioural problems and crisis
support (located in Glen Waverley).
· The Alannah & Madeline Foundation - a leading national not-for-profit organisation protecting children from
violence and creating behavioural change in the community to address bullying and cyberbullying.
Thank you so much to our MWPS students for making this decision to support others in our community.
