PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
CURRICULUM DAY
On Monday 13 April , while students had one final sleep in,
teachers were hard at work developing our understanding
of the Michael Fullan New Pedagogies for Deep Learning.
The purpose of the day in broad terms was to examine our
understanding, beliefs, values and assumptions about
learning and how we learn. Two key questions were asked:
What difference can we make in the learning lives of our
students this year?
Are we preparing our learners for their future or our past?
NPDL is a pathway to ‘getting better’ and is applicable to all
levels and curriculum strands. It refines our practice and
delves into the learning process. NPDL enables teachers to
gain a deeper understanding of how the brain works and
how we learn. It is student centred, is aimed at
empowering teachers and will be supported by our new
association with Quality Learning Australia.
NPDL does not assume that our practice is incorrect. In fact,
we have highly committed and professional teachers
already doing a great job who still have a thirst for learning
themselves and continually strive to improve, along with
keeping abreast of current educational thinking based on
extensive research. ‘Deep Learning’ in the way that Fullan
describes it, develops the learning, creating and ‘doing’
dispositions that young people need to thrive on now and in
their futures. Premised on the unique powers of human
inquiry, creativity and purpose, new pedagogies are
unleashing students and teachers’ energy and excitement in
developing learning partnerships that find, activate and
cultivate the deep learning potential in all of us.
Parents wishing to explore more about leading
educationalists and research can Google: John Hattie,
Michael Fullan, David Langford, Vic Zbar and Lane Clark, to
name a few.
STUDENT SAFETY
For the safety of all children and adults it is very
important that families use the school crossings,
taking care to obey the people who man the
crossings and adhering to restricted speed zones.
It is also important that parents/guardians do not
park in the Staff Carparks or use these areas as
walk throughs.
We are greatly concerned about the number of
adults who ignore these requests and put their
children and themselves at risk.

SERVICE
LEST WE
FORGET
On Tuesday, 21 April, 16 students attended the Monash ANZAC
service organised by the Monash Rotary Club. This was an
interesting ceremony in which we heard a very inspirational
story presented by Colonel John Coulson, sharing an emotional
recording from his Great Grandfather after his time he served at
war. His Grandfather (Ted) and his mates convinced their
parents to let them go to war and Ted and his mates forged
their ages. They thought that war would be a great chance for
them to be able to explore the world free of charge, as well as
getting a good name for fighting for the Empire. It was only
when they got to the battlefield they realised they were playing
with their lives. Ted lost his mates in the Gallipoli Battle but he
was lucky enough to survive the war.
On behalf of our school the School and Vice Captains laid a
wreath to show our appreciation and respect for the supreme
sacrifices that many soldiers made so we can we live in a safe
and peaceful country.
Remember to take
your rubbish home
to keep the school
clean.
We are very grateful for this experience and we thank everyone
involved.

CURRICULUM
FAMILY MATHS BAGS
Over the next few weeks our Prep to Year 2 students will
be bringing home their class Family Maths Bag. The
Family Maths Bags contain many interesting activities,
information and equipment that will allow families to
explore the world around them by using numbers and
mathematical tools.
The Maths Bags will also encourage families to have
mathematical conversations with one another.
When it is your family’s turn for the Maths Bag we
encourage you to take a few days to explore the contents
of the bag and then return it to school. You might try
only one of the suggested activities each day or you might
do more. Just have fun and make Maths a focus in your
family routine.
When returning the bag to school we would encourage all
families to support their child by ensuring that all the
contents of the bag are returned Missing and damaged
equipment spoils it for other children and their families.
If there are any queries about the Family Maths Bags
please see your child’s teacher or contact Danielle
Bonacci (Prep D).
RUNNING CLUB
Running Club will commence this coming Monday 27
April.
Thank you to those parents who have volunteered to
assist, although we could do with some more helpers.
If you are interested please email
[email protected] so that we can
add you to the list of available helpers. It doesn't need
to be every week and even if only for emergencies a few
extra helpers would be great.
All students (and teachers!) are encouraged to
participate and try to achieve a Bronze Certificate 25km, Silver Certificate - 50km, Gold Certificate - 75km
or their 100km Medal. Last year students from Prep to
Year 5 achieve their 100km Medal so anyone any age
can achieve success.
Running Club will continue for 25 weeks, so those who
can achieve 5 laps a week will reach the 100km
target. We look forward to seeing you all at the gate at
lunch time on Monday.
Merryn Ashcroft
P.E Teacher.
3A’S GARDEN DUTY
On Thursday 16 April, Class 3A tidied up our school grounds. We pulled out weeds from the garden beds, swept up the
sand surrounding the sand pit and shovelled it back into the pit and swept up the acorns surrounding the oak trees.
Garden duty was really hard work but a lot of fun. Our efforts have helped to keep our school looking beautiful, while
we were keeping fit.
Change The World In Minutes
The Senior Environment Team have undertaken a challenge to
CHANGE THE WORLD IN 5 MINUTES. This can easily be achieved
by taking small actions towards making our community a more sustainable place to in which to live. Next week the
challenge is to recycle as many mobile phones and mobile phone accessories as possible.
We ask that students please bring to school any old phones and accessories for recycling. Students, parents and
friends may bring in these things any time from today. Each class will have a small collection box. During Week 3 the
Senior Environment Team will call for a five minute collection of all mobile phones and parts for recycling. These will
then be collected by Mobile Muster as part of our commitment to Zoos Victoria to help save endangered gorillas in
the wild. For more information on this program go to
www.zoo.org.au/callingonyou
